INC.: CRAFTING A LIVING IN A CAPITALIST ECONOMY Michele A. Krugh, Ph.D. George Mason University, 2016 Dissertation Director: Dr. Mark Jacobs Currently, American interest in craft might be the most widespread it has ever been. The successful e-commerce site Etsy, founded in 2005 and specializing in handmade goods, vintage products, and craft supplies, has played a major role in this contemporary craft resurgence. As a peer-to-peer sharing economy platform and a Certified B Corporation, Etsy, Inc. promises to improve the future through equitable uses of technology, providing some level of income for millions of people, as consumers spend billions of dollars annually on the site. Existing at the intersection of craft idealism, neoliberalism, financialization, techno-utopianism, and ethical business debates, Etsy exposes the contradictions and complications of business, work, and consumption at the current conjuncture. This dissertation interrogates Etsy’s ability to provide meaningful opportunities for making a living through craftwork in the financial system of advanced capitalism. Rooted vii in an idealistic legacy that envisions craft as a form of social critique, contemporary crafters attempt to balance the desire to make a living through the work they love with the precarious nature of such work. Craft provides a way for buyers to display their lifestyles and ethical values through their purchases. Yet as craft becomes more ubiquitous, it is in danger of losing its appeal and authenticity, which in turn will impact the ability of the seller to make a living. Ultimately I conclude that Etsy’s “reimagination” of commerce depends on its success in advocating social changes and providing even more meaningful opportunities for making a living through craftwork. viii INTRODUCTION Currently, American interest in craft might be the most widespread it has ever been. 1 This resurgence began in the mid-1990s and grew stronger in the mid-2000s, fueled by increased access to and availability of the internet. As crafters went online, they brought the community aspects of craft with them, connecting through sites like knitting- focused Ravelry.com, Instructables.com, Flickr.com, Pinterest.com, countless blogs and mobile apps like Instagram. Crafters connected with each other to share tutorials, tips, and inspiration. Craft became so popular that mass manufacturers began to use the language of craft, particularly terms like “handmade” and “crafted for you,” as part of marketing

RAYNOLDS Professor, Department of Sociology, Director, Center for Fair & Alternative Trade, Colorado State University Email: [email protected] Fairtrade Certification, Labor Standards, and Labor Rights Comparative Innovations and Persistent Challenges ABSTRACT Fairtrade International certification is the primary social certification in the agro-food sector in- tended to promote the well-being and empowerment of farmers and workers in the Global South. Although Fairtrade’s farmer program is well studied, far less is known about its labor certification. Helping fill this gap, this article provides a systematic account of Fairtrade’s labor certification system and standards and com- pares it to four other voluntary programs addressing labor conditions in global agro-export sectors. The study explains how Fairtrade International institutionalizes its equity and empowerment goals in its labor certifica- tion system and its recently revised labor standards. Drawing on critiques of compliance-based labor stand- ards programs and proposals regarding the central features of a ‘beyond compliance’ approach, the inquiry focuses on Fairtrade’s efforts to promote inclusive governance, participatory oversight, and enabling rights. I argue that Fairtrade is making important, but incomplete, advances in each domain, pursuing a ‘worker- enabling compliance’ model based on new audit report sharing, living wage, and unionization requirements and its established Premium Program. While Fairtrade pursues more robust ‘beyond compliance’ advances than competing programs, the study finds that, like other voluntary initiatives, Fairtrade faces critical challenges in implementing its standards and realizing its empowerment goals. PEIFER1 Indiana University, Bloomington, USA KRISTEN D. LANDREVILLE University of Wyoming, USA Exploring factors that contribute to the social transmission of debate parody, this study employs the conceptual lenses of affective disposition and discrete emotions. An online experiment was conducted within days of Saturday Night Live’s original airing of its parody of the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Participants (N = 472) were randomly assigned to view either the parody of the debate or a non-politics-related parody sketch. The debate parody was significantly more mirth and hope inducing when participants had an unfavorable disposition toward Trump; there was no difference in mirth and hope between the exposure conditions among those who had a more favorable disposition toward Trump. Furthermore, mirth and hope were demonstrated to predict willingness to share the humor. Both positive emotions served as significant mediating mechanisms for debate parody’s relationship with willingness to share, as amplified by one’s negative affective disposition for Trump.
