It is an earth-fill embankment-type dam with a clay core. The problems of the dam • Since the dam is built on a foundation of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone, water can seep under the dam and compromise its stability, posing the risk of catastrophic failure. • To avoid this, continuous maintenance has taken place since the dam’s opening, in the form of grouting: new leaks are plugged by injecting a cement mixture into the compromised spots. • The grouting stopped in 2014 with the arrival of ISIS. Even if the dam was back in the control of Peshmerga (North Kurdistan) late 2014, the machines for grouting were severely damaged. -

It is located on the main river course 65 km upstream of the Syrian and Iraqi border. The Ilisu Dam watershed is the same as that of the Mosul Dam in Iraq. Sharing the same watershed with the Mosul Dam and located upstream, the Ilisu Dam will usurp most of the watershed and deprive the Mosul Dam of most of its current inflow. This paper presents an assessment of the hydrological impact (basically predicts changes on future inflow) of the Ilisu Dam on the Mosul Dam. The assessment is based on the worst-case scenario. The analyses that are employed include geographic information system (GIS) techniques and regression models, along with statistical analyses to numerate expected future impacts on the Mosul Dam’s inflow distribution. Results reveal that the Ilisu will have a drastic impact on the inflow regime of the Mosul Dam. -

Yet despite the newness of the setting, the alleged crime the U.S. government was prosecuting on July 16 was as old as war itself. The government had “preferred charges” against Lance Cpl. Stephen B. Tatum of Kilo Company, 3rd Bat- talion, 1st Marine Division, for the “unpremeditated murder” of two civilians, both OF Iraqi children, and the negligent homicide of four FOG WAR other Iraqi civilians, among them a woman and a 4-year-old boy. A native of Edmund, Okla., Tatum who was 25 at the time of the incident, faces life imprison- ment if convicted. His alleged war crimes were part of a larger investigation into the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians in Haditha, Iraq, on Nov. 19, 2005, after an impro- vised explosive device (IED) killed one Marine and wounded two others. Artikkelen argumenterer for at de folkerettslige rammene for det norske militære bidraget i Irak pa˚ et par vesentlige punkter skiller seg fra andre nyere norske militære utenlandsoperasjoner. Den peker pa˚ tre utfordringer som det norske militære engasjementet i Irak derfor medfører: notoriteten til det militære oppdraget innad og utad, rettssikkerheten til norske soldater, og effektiviteten til soldater i en prekær rettslig situasjon. It argues that this military operation is distinguished from other Norwegian military expeditions in recent decades. The article draws attention to three challenges that consequently arise: a low level of clarity concerning the nature and scope of the assignment, lack of legal guarantees calibrated to the tasks of the soldiers and finally poor efficiency resulting from a precarious legal situation. Our only objective shall be to make you all speak and participate in the discussion, and we pledge to give every effort for the same. How to research for the agenda and beyond? There are several things to consider. This background guide shall be different from the background guides you might have come across in other MUNs and will emphasise more on providing you the right Direction where you find matter for your research than to provide you matter itself, because we do not believe in spoon- feeding you, nor do we believe in leaving you to swim in the pond all by yourself. However, we promise that if you read the entire set of documents so provided, you shall be able to cover 70% of your research for the conference. The remaining amount of research depends on how much willing are you to put in your efforts and understand those articles and/or documents. So, in the purest of the language we can say, it is important to read anything and everything whose links are provided in the background guide. What to speak in the committee and in what manner? The basic emphasis of the committee shall not be on how much facts you read and present in the committee but how you explain them in simple and decent language to us and the fellow committee members.
