CEU eTD Collection Abstract The purpose of literature in Soviet Central Asia was to integrate its population into the Soviet project. Despite that, the historiography of Soviet Central Asia’s literary experiences is a newly developing branch of study and so far remains limited, while children’s literature in Soviet Central Asia is a practically unstudied field. This thesis looks at the case of Soviet literature in Turkmenistan, specifically at the Soviet endeavor to bring the new reality into Turkmen life through the medium of the newly created Soviet Turkmen children’s literature. The thesis addresses the process of creation of children’s literature in Soviet Turkmenistan from its origins in the early 1930s till the early 1950s. The goal of the thesis is to look at one aspect of how the program of creating Turkmen Soviet children’s literature happened in the Turkmen context of the early Soviet rule and what its literary results represented.

  • Translations of Non-Russian Soviet Literature In
264 Contents list available at Vilnius University Press Knygotyra ISSN 0204–2061 eISSN 2345-0053 2019, vol. 73, pp. 264–288 DOI: https://doi.org/10.15388/Knygotyra.2019.73.40 TRANSLATIONS OF NON-RUSSIAN SOVIET LITERATURE IN ESTONIAN BOOK PRODUCTION (1940s–1980s) Aile Möldre Tallinn University, School of Digital Technologies Narva mnt 25, 10120 Tallinn, Estonia Email: [email protected] Summary. This paper explores the dynamics of publishing of non-Russian Soviet lite- ratures in Soviet Estonia, establishing the output of titles and the most popular source literatures. The analysis follows the position of Soviet national literatures during four periods in political history: the Stalinist years, the Thaw, Stagnation, and Perestroika. The study uses statistical yearbooks, bibliographies, archival material, as well as research literatu- re as sources. The publishing of Soviet literature was strongly regulated by the publishing authorities and dependent on ideological directions. The analysis demonstrates that the proportion of the non-Russian Soviet literatures started to increase during the Thaw period, but the peak of its production was reached during the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s due to official pressure. The total number of source literatures was 49, de- monstrating the diversity of translation production, although they were represented equally. The top source literatures were Latvian, Lithuanian, and Ukrainian. The interest of the literary circles and reading audiences in the translations was rather weak, although the top authors attracted the attention of the more intellectual segment of readers. Keywords: publishing, translations, Estonia, Soviet era, Soviet national literatures. Received: 31/8/2019. Accepted: 30/9/2019 Copyright © 2019 Aile Möldre.
