Roller coasters are iconic structures that provide safe thrills for riders. Safety is achieved using multiple safety mechanisms: for example, bogies have multiple wheels that hold trains on track, a block system prevents trains from colliding and riders are held in place with safety restraints. Regular maintenance checks are also performed to prevent accidents caused by failed parts. Roller coasters are designed using a heartline spline and calculating accelerations in all possible scenarios to prevent rollbacks and too high values of accelerations, which could cause damage to riders’ bodies. A reach envelope is applied to the spline to prevent riders from hitting nearby objects. The speed and curvature of the track combined create acceler- ations that need to be countered with adequate track and support structures. A track cross- section usually consists of rails, cross-ties and a spine, while support structures can vary depending on height and loads. -

Historic Amusement Parks and Fairground Rides Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which lack such a summary. This can either be where the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. Many of these are what might be thought of as ‘new heritage’, that is they date from after the Second World War. With origins that can be traced to annual fairs and 18th-century pleasure grounds, and much influenced by America’s Coney Island amusement park of the 1890s, England has one of the finest amusement park and fairground ride heritages in the world. A surprising amount survives today. The most notable site is Blackpool Pleasure Beach, in Lancashire, which has an unrivalled heritage of pre-1939 fairground rides. Other early survivals in England include scenic railways at Margate and Great Yarmouth, and water splash rides in parks at Kettering, Kingston-upon-Hull and Scarborough that date from the 1920s. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is in the northern California Bay Area and is themed after animals. It has 8 roller coasters and many animal exhibits, including many marine animal attractions along with safari animals like lions, giraffes, and elephants, and more. The park was originally an oceanarium that added a land animal park to it, later one it was converted into an amusement park with roller coasters and other small attractions and bought by Six Flags. Discovery Kingdom currently has 8 coasters. There are 7 steel coasters, 2 of which are inverted, while the rest are sit down, including 1 wooden roller coaster. Also, the park is animal themed and although they name rides after the animals, they do not really theme the rides that much, which is something that is really disappointing. -

This week, we will discuss the currently industry leaders, as well as a few other large / notable manufacturers Intamin AG Intamin (abbreviation for International Amusement Installations) is one of the two most prominent steel coaster manufacturers today A Swiss company, they were founded in 1967 and begun building flat rides like observation towers They began their move into the roller coaster world by serving as an intermediary for Schwarzkopf when selling rides in America. Over time, they began building their own creations Their first coaster was only 19ft tall (Jr. Gemini at Cedar Point; ironically, 34 years later, they would add a coaster nearby that stood 400ft taller) One of their employees, who also worked with Schwarzkopf, was Werner Stengel, the greatest steel coaster designer in the world. He has had his hand in over 500 roller coaster projects and was behind such innovations as the modern vertical loop and heartlining. Noordzij PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO ROLLER COASTER RIDES 2 Abstract Introduction: The aim of the study was to measure and analyse arousal of roller coaster passengers in both VR and real-world to make a comparison between these situations. To make arousal testable two approachesare introduced: separating the ride in contiguous phases vs. grouping data by roller coaster elements. Study 1: Participants watched roller coasters in virtual reality while their EDA and HR was measured. A decrease of these measures from the first to the last phase was found. Only a weak association of roller coaster elements with specific arousal reactions was ob- served. Study 2: With a small group of participants an amusement park was visited to ride real-world roller coasters. No phase-dependent change of arousal was found. However, some roller coaster elements were accompanied with specific changes in arousal. For all roller coasters continuous EDA and HR is reported. Conclusion: Even though no direct comparison between VR and real-world was con- ducted our research implies that both conditions have different effects on real-time arousal. We conclude that VR roller coasters can not be seen as an equivalent alternative to real- world roller coasters.
