Albert Outler, circa 1940s. A GUIDE TO THE PAPERS OF ALBERT COOK OUTLER 9 Foreword

The Albert Cook Outler papers represent one of the most extensive and significant archival collections at Bridwell Library, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. A prominent Methodist theologian and John Wesley scholar of world renown, Dr. Outler (1908–1989) served on the faculty of Perkins School of Theology for nearly four decades (1951–1979; professor emeritus 1979–1989). The papers fully document his ministerial, scholarly, and professional activities as well as his personal life. Donated in the 1990s through Outler’s trustee, the Rev. Bob W. Parrott, the materials were initially inventoried by Page A. Thomas and Julie Halstead. On the occasion of the 2008 Perkins School of Theology Ministers Week devoted to the theme “Albert Outler and the Wesleyan Spirit,” the library presented the small exhibition “Albert Cook Outler (1908–1989): A Centenary Exhibit,” on display November 14, 2007–May 5, 2008.

Following the appointment in 2009 of Timothy Binkley as the first Bridwell Library Archivist, Colleen Bradley-Sanders was hired to review, organize, and process the Outler papers according to modern professional standards and guidelines. Supported throughout the process by Bridwell Library’s administration, this finding aid is the result of her dedication to the project, the collection, and the library. In addition to this print publication, the finding aid is also accessible online in TARO (Texas Archival Resources Online.) Both the print and online finding aids were reviewed and published with the detailed oversight of the Archivist.

To publicize the collection, Bridwell Library has prepared a related exhibition and digital collection. “The Albert Cook Outler Papers,” an exhibition comprising ninety items, will be on display February 2–May 1, 2015 in The Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries. In addition to the exhibition onsite, an online version will be available on the library’s website. Complementing the exhibition, the digital collection for the Outler papers will provide access to additional materials including manuscripts, publications, photographs, audio, and video. The expertise of Exhibition Designer Jon Speck and Digital Projects Librarian Rebecca Howdeshell have contributed greatly to these outreach efforts. To further celebrate the exhibition and promote the use of the collection, Outler’s legacy will be explored by Dr. Leicester Longden, Associate Professor of Evangelism and Discipleship emeritus, University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, when he delivers the Fondren lecture for Ministers Week at Perkins School of Theology in February 2015. 10 A GUIDE TO THE PAPERS OF ALBERT COOK OUTLER

In 1988 Dr. Outler wrote to Bridwell Library director Rev. Dr. Robert Maloy regarding the prospect of his materials being made accessible. He expressed his gratitude to the library for undertaking to care for his collection, “to see them shelved, stored, dispersed or discarded in ways that may be judged most useful, if at all, to accredited students (young and old), qualified researchers, and to interested readers.” He also understood the library’s need to make whatever constructive adaptions of it that may enhance its original intentions: “to be as useful as possible both to ‘the academy’ and ‘the church.’” With the publication of this finding aid and supporting exhibition and digital collection, researchers will be able to fully investigate Albert Outler’s rich legacy as a churchman, scholar, theologian, author, teacher, and ecumenicist.

DANIEL J. SLIVE Head of Special Collections Bridwell Library Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University A GUIDE TO THE PAPERS OF ALBERT COOK OUTLER 11 Introduction

Archival finding aids describe the content, historical context, and physical arrangement of archival collections: groups of personal papers and corporate records deemed to have historical research value. This finding aid, A Guide to the Papers of Albert Cook Outler, describes the documentary legacy of a scholar, educator, churchman, and ecumenical Christian leader of great importance to Southern Methodist University (SMU), the , and beyond.

The Albert Cook Outler papers comprise the largest and most significant collection in the Perkins School of Theology archive at Bridwell Library, the principal bibliographic resource at Southern Methodist University for the fields of theology and religious studies. The size of the collection reflects Outler’s long career as a clergyman and educator, his prolific written output, and his frequent speaking engagements combined with an apparent inability to discard anything.

When Bridwell Library received the Outler papers in the 1990s, 358 linear feet of materials were placed in archival boxes and indexed by Julie Halstead and Page A. Thomas. Although it was not a standard archival finding aid, the 387-page Halstead–Thomas index has served many researchers since 1993. Realizing that more could be done to organize and describe the Outler materials, in 2010 Bridwell Library administrators hired Colleen Bradley-Sanders to process the collection according to current professional guidelines (Describing Archives: A Content Standard).

A Guide to the Papers of Albert Cook Outler is the result of four years of labor studying the collection, re–establishing the original order of materials and crafting additional records series, removing redundant and out–of–scope materials, rehousing the collection, and compiling data necessary for the creation of an Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aid. These tasks were performed in order to improve access to the collection, enhance its preservation, and revive interest in Outler now that twenty–five years have passed since his death.

Within this finding aid researchers will find data about the collection’s size, date range, scope, and organization. The finding aid also notes the various types of materials found in the collection, mentions related and separated materials, and offers information about Albert Outler’s life. It concludes with a lengthy list of the contents of the collection specified at the folder level. One hundred printed copies of the Guide are being produced for use in selected academic libraries 12 A GUIDE TO THE PAPERS OF ALBERT COOK OUTLER

across the United States. An electronic version, posted online in TARO (Texas Archival Resources Online, http://www.lib.utexas.edu/taro), will allow researchers to search for specific words and phrases.

Colleen Bradley–Sanders and I wish to acknowledge Wanda W. Smith (1923–2013), Dr. Outler’s former administrative assistant, for sharing information, encouragement, and personal memories with us freely. We would also like to thank Bridwell Library Director Roberta Schaafsma, Associate Director James McMillin, Head of Special Collections Daniel Slive, staff colleagues Rebecca Howdeshell, Jesse Hunt, Heather Oglevie, Jon Speck, Linda Umoh, and Eric White, student assistants Frances Allington, Rachel Godat, Rebekah Rochte, Rachel Tillay, intern Kelly Baxter, and the SMU EAD Team for helping bring the Albert Outler papers project to a successful completion.

Biographical Note

Methodist minister and theological educator Albert Cook Outler was born on November 17, 1908 in Thomasville, Georgia, the son of Rev. John Morgan Outler and Gertrude Flint Dewberry Outler. Albert Outler studied at Wofford College (A.B., 1928), Emory University (B.D., 1933), and Yale University (Ph.D., 1938). He received a local preacher’s license in 1927 and affiliated with the South Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, becoming a deacon in 1930 and elder in 1933. Outler’s ministerial appointments in Georgia included Bexley (1929–1930), Pineview (1930–1932), Gordon (1932–1934), and Macon (1934–1935). From 1947 to 1949 Albert Outler also served as pastor of the First Methodist Church of Wallingford, Connecticut.

Upon completion of his doctoral studies at Yale University, Outler held teaching positions at Duke University (1938–1945), Yale University (1945–1951), and Southern Methodist University (1951–1979). 14 A GUIDE TO THE PAPERS OF ALBERT COOK OUTLER

Additionally, Outler taught three summer terms at Union Theological Seminary (1943, 1953, and 1967), was a visiting senior fellow at Princeton University (1956–1957), served as Mellon Visiting Professor of Religion at Davidson College (1980), and taught at Texas Wesleyan University (1983– 1984).

A prolific author, Outler contributed articles to many scholarly journals and was the principal author of the section “Our Theological Task” in the 1972 United Methodist Book of Discipline. His larger works include: A Christian Context for Counseling (1945), Colleges, Faculties and Religion: An Appraisal of the Program of Faculty Consultations on Religion in Higher Education (1949), Psychotherapy and the Christian Message (1954), The Confessions and Enchiridion of St. Augustine (1955), The Christian Tradition and the Unity We Seek (1957), That the World May Believe: A Study in Christian Unity (1966), Methodist Observer at Vatican II (1967), Who Trusts in God: Musings on the Meaning of Providence (1968), Evangelism in the Wesleyan Spirit (1971), and Theology in the Wesleyan Spirit (1975).

Through the editing of John Wesley (1964) and four volumes of John Wesley’s sermons (1984–1987), Outler became a leading Wesley scholar. Outler’s view that John Wesley was a folk–theologian whose teachings contributed greatly to the development of Western Christianity and are worthy of study by Methodists and other Christians has had a lasting impact on and beyond the United Methodist Church.

Albert Outler was a gifted orator who accepted frequent speaking invitations beyond his regular teaching duties. Between 1945 and 1986 he delivered more than one hundred major lectures. Additionally Outler addressed numerous Methodist, ecumenical, and academic gatherings including convocations of pastors in several states, six Danforth Foundation conferences between 1951 and 1980, the National Council of the YMCA (1954), the First Quadrennial Convocation of Christian Colleges (1954), the World Council of Churches Consultation of Church Historians (1956), the Methodist Conference on Christian Vocation (1957), the American Baptist Convention (1959), the Institute of Religion at Texas Medical Center, Houston (1961 and 1968), the Oxford Institute on Methodist Theology (1962, 1981, and 1987), the Faith and Order World Conference (1963), the Conference on in an Ecumenical Age (1963), the Uniting Conference of the United Methodist Church (1968), the Ecumenical Institute for Advanced Theological Studies at Tantur, Jerusalem (1972), the (1974 and 1988), the Montreat Bible and Theology Conference (1982), the Conference on Faith and History (1984), and the American Academy of Religion (1984).

Outler served as president of the American Theological Society (1960–1962), president of the American Society of Church History (1963–1964), and president of the American Catholic A GUIDE TO THE PAPERS OF ALBERT COOK OUTLER 15

Historical Society (1972–1973). In 1966 he became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Eight years later, in 1974, Outler was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters.

Albert Outler was an active member of the North Texas Annual Conference from 1952 to 1978. The Conference elected him clergy delegate to three General Conferences of the Methodist Church (1960, 1964, and 1966) and three General Conferences of the United Methodist Church (1968, 1972, and 1976). Outler’s denominational service included terms as vice president of the Commission on Ecumenical Affairs (1964–1968), chair of the Theological Study Commission on Doctrines and Doctrinal Standards (1968–1972), and member of the executive committee of the World Methodist Council (1976–1982).

An ecumenical leader of great significance, Albert Outler played leading roles in the Consultation on Church Union and the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches. From 1962 to 1965 he attended the Second Vatican Council as an official delegate–observer on behalf of the World Methodist Council. He also participated in a series of Roman Catholic–Methodist bilateral conversations following Vatican II (1965–1981) and served on the Board of Directors of the National Catholic Reporter (1973–1983). Outler’s interest in interfaith relations is evidenced in his service as the first Rector of Thanks-Giving Square in Dallas (1976–1988), his joint appearance with the Dalai Lama at the Second Convocation of World Thanksgiving (1984), and his long–standing friendship with Rabbi Levi A. Olan (1903–1984).

Outler was a man of encyclopedic interests and knowledge who understood himself to be uniquely placed to connect people and institutions across historical and theological divides. His work helped build bridges of understanding between the past and the present, between the church and academia, among Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox Christians, between Christianity and other religions, and between mainline and evangelical blocs within the United Methodist Church.

In a 1960 article, “The Ordeal of a Happy Dilettante,” Albert Outler shared these thoughts about himself with the readers of The Christian Century:

If I could choose my own epitaph I would want to speak of one who was sustained in a rather strenuous career by the vision of a Christian theology that gives history its full due; that makes way for the future without having to murder the past; that begins and ends with the self–manifestation of God’s mystery in our flesh and our history.

Albert Cook Outler married Carlotta “Carla” Grace Smith (1910–2001) of Birmingham, Alabama, on December 18, 1931. They raised two children: Frances G. Allsop and David S. Outler. Albert Outler died in Bradenton, Florida on September 1, 1989. Carla Outler died on October 22, 2001, in Granbury, Texas. To honor Dr. Outler’s memory, Perkins School of Theology held its 2008 Ministers Week on the theme, “Albert Outler and the Wesleyan Spirit.” 16 A GUIDE TO THE PAPERS OF ALBERT COOK OUTLER

The fifth series documents Dr. Outler’s many non–teaching activities and responsibilities at Perkins and SMU, including committee work, faculty seminars, and Ministers Week. The largest groups of materials within this series detail his service as chairman of the Faculty Planning Committee for the SMU Master Plan and his leadership of the Southwest Seminar on the Development of Catholic Christianity. Although the series opens with correspondence folders, most letters to and from university officials are located in Series 6, Correspondence.
