Checklist of vascular plants. 4. revised edition 1993 sommerf~ is owned and edited by the Botanical Garden and Museum, University of Oslo. SOMMERFELTIA is named in honour of the eminent Norwegian botanist and clergyman S0ren Christian Sommerfelt (1794-1838). The generic name Sommerfeltia has been used in (1) the lichens by Florke 1827, now Solorina, (2) Fabaceae by Schumacher 1827, now Drepanocarpus, and (3) Asteraceae by Lessing 1832, nom. cons. SOMMERFELTIA is a series of monographs in plant taxonomy, phytogeography, phyto sociology, plant ecology, plant morphology, and evolutionary botany. Most papers are by Norwegian authors. Authors not on the staff of the Botanical Garden and Museum in Oslo pay a page charge of NOK 30. SOMMERFELTIA appears at irregular intervals, normally one article per volume. Editor: Rune Halvorsen 0kland. Editorial Board: Scientific staff of the Botanical Garden and Museum. Address: SOMMERFELTIA, Botanical Garden and Museum, University of Oslo, Trond heimsveien 23B, N-0562 Oslo 5, Norway. An up-to-date checklist of the vascular plants of Macaronesia (the Azores, the Madeira archipelago, the Salvage Islands, the Canary Island, and the Cape Verde Islands) is given. 3,106 species belonging to 1,062 genera are listed, as are also a number of intraspecific taxa down to variety level. 20 new nomenclatural combinations are made within the genera Atalanthus, Lavandula, Pericallis, Satureja, and Sinapidendron. A second section lists ea. 2,300 synonyms and their presumed identity. Keywords: Macaronesia, Azores, Madeira, Salvage Islands, Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, Vascular plants. The list represents a continuation and revision of the three first editions (1974, 1979, and 1985) of the checklist. Taxonomic, nomenclatural and floristic work have been actively performed within the archipelagos, and compared to the 1985 edition some 200 species have been added to the flora, as well as more than 900 new distribution data (i.e., new island records). The number of additions has, relatively seen, been largest in the Cape Verde Islands. Within each of the four parts Pteridophyta, Gymnospermae (Pinophyta), Dicotyledoneae (Magnoliatae), and Monocotyledoneae (Liliatae), the families, the genera (1,062) within each family, and the species (3,106) within each genus are arranged in alphabetical order. Only species stated to have been recorded as spontaneous or naturalized plants within the archipelagos have been included. As practise in floristical literature on the archipelagos, however, have been somewhat different with regard to inclusion of cultivated plants, this has not always been easy to do consistently. Hybrids are normally listed under their respective parental names, followed by their hybrid names - if given - listed in brackets. Endemics are especially marked in the list by a black dot. "Endemic" is here understood as endemic only to the particular islands with which we are concerned. Species besides occurring in the so-called Macaronesian enclave in the African mainland and/or in single localities in the Iberian peninsula are thus not regarded as Macaronesian endemics in this connection. The dots indicating endemism are used to mark whether a certain taxon - isolated seen - is endemic in this respect. As taxa of succeeding hierarchic rank are often designated endemics independent of each other, the number of dots are thus higher than the number of true endemics. A second section lists 2,327 synonyms frequently used, especially in older Macaronesian taxonomic and floristic literature. No attempt has been made to reach completeness in this list. It is mainly intended as a means to find the proper names - or the names used in the main part of the checklist - for taxa where orientation among alternative names has become difficult from the many nomenclatural changes in the course of time. 6 SOMMERFELTIA 17 (1993) NOMENCLATURALCHANGES The genus Taeckholmia L. Boulos (1967) is considered a synonym of Atalanthus D. Don ( 1829) (Farr et al. 1986; Mabberley 1987). 5 Macaronesian taxa have so far no names under Atalanthus: Atalanthus canariensis (Boulos) A. Hansen et P. Sunding, comb. nov. Basionym: Taeckholmia canariensis Boulos, Bot. Notiser 120: 100 (1967). Atalanthus capillaris (Svent.) A. Hansen et P. Sunding, comb. nov. Basionym: Sonchus capillaris Sventenius, Addit. Fl. Canar. 1: 85 (1960). Atalanthus microcarpus (Boulos) A. Hansen et P. Sunding, comb. nov. Basionym: Taeckholmia microcarpa Boulos, Bot. Notiser 120: 102 (1967). Atalanthus regis-jubae (Pit.) A. Hansen et P. Sunding, comb. nov. Basionym: Sonchus Regis-Juba Pitard in Pitard et Proust, Iles Canar., Flore Archipel: 262 (1908). Atalanthus webbii (Sch. Bip. in Webb et Berth.) A. Hansen et P. Sunding, comb. nov. Basionym: Sonchus webbii Schultz Bipontinus in Webb et Berthelot, Phytogr. Canar. 2: pl. 136 (1848), p. 444 (1849-50). Syn.: Taeckholmia heterophylla Boulos, Bot. Notiser 120: 104 (1967). According to Miller ( 1985, p. 519) the name Lavandula coronopifolia Poiret in Lam. (1813) has priority over L. stricta Delile (1813), hence: Lavandula coronopifolia Pair. var. subtropica (Gandoger) A. Hansen et P. Sunding, comb. nov. Basionym: Lavandula subtropica Gandoger, Bull. Soc. Bot. Fr. 65: 66 (1918). Syn.: L. stricta Del. var. subtropica (Gand.) Chaytor Pericallis lanata (L'Her.) B. Nord. var. cyanophthalma (W.J. Hooker) A. Hansen et P. Sunding, comb. nov. Basionym: Senecio heritieri DC. var. cyanophthalmus W.J. Hooker, Curtis's Bot. Mag. 67: pl. 3827 (1841). Willemse (1991) followed Briquet's broad concept of Satureja, including Micromeria in this genus, also pointing to the practise used in the Med-Checklist (Greuter et al. 1986). Willemse made valid combinations within Satureja for most of the Macaronesian taxa that had not already been named by Briquet. For 11 Canarian Micromeria taxa there exist no names under Satureja: SOMMERFELTIA 17 (1993) 7 Satureja x perez-pazii (G. Kunkel) A. Hansen et P. Sunding, comb. nov. Abstract. This work constitutes the first step towards the publication of a Red Book of vascular flora of Morocco. All vascular plant species will be included. The present fascicule is dedicated to ferns. Overall, the proposed work adopts the categories and criteria of the IUCN Red List. Common species (category LC), for the most part, are simply listed. The others are presented in a more or less detail, depending on the available information, in order to justify the choice of the affected category, but also to allow traceability of information for future review or reassessment.
