Mysterious Traveller page. Extraordinary music. Still great today. Genius, all ways up. I know this record from way back and I first heard it with a friend. We were both a Mysterious Traveller bit "out of our minds" at the time, I was so excited I was jumping on the settee and the stereo sounded fantastic. A couple of days later I went back and saw that the stereo was a complete piece of junk the effects of altered consciousness but who cares? That was a great night and I Mysterious Traveller this Mysterious Traveller easily Weather Report's Mysterious Traveller recording and their best line-up. I saw them play live in London, that was terrific too. The musical accents come via mostly from Africa, the jazz generally from Shorter's short but sweet sax interjections and Alphonso Johnson's funk inflected bass lines, while the rock derives from the driving pulsing Mysterious Traveller courtesy of the two drummers present playing in tandem throughout. This album essentially takes the ideas of Miles Davis's 'In a Silent Way' an album that Zawinul and Shorter contributed to heavily and builds on them, creating Mysterious Traveller identity build largely on electronic keyboards which supply much of the melody and texture. It seems to be fashionable to suggest that Weather Report's music sounds rather dated. Given the evidence of this albumI have to disagree. The standard of writing makes this one of W. R's Mysterious Traveller consistent albums- there is never a dull moment. The playing sounds inspired and not as in some very late W. R where the musicians often sound like Mysterious Traveller are there to back Joe Zawinul and little more. Also, this remastering job means that what used to sound rather dense and homogeneous in nature, now sounds brimming with life and sonic incident. Granted some listeners might find some of the synth sounds a tad quaint,but that aside this is one fusion album that has worn well. My only complaint is that Wayne Shorter should have been more in evidence. Where Wayne Mysterious Traveller as in his beautiful track,'Blackthorn Mysterious Traveller, the music takes on a more organic feel that is generated more by innate musicianship and group interaction then reliance on studio wizziness and keyboard electonica. There is plenty to love here- my faves. Could this be W. R at their most satisfying and adventurous? I used to have a couple of Weather Report albums but somewhere along the line lost them. After catching a YouTube Mysterious Traveller I decided it was time to renew the relationship and bought this, my favourite album. I as surprised just how fresh their music still is. It really doesn't sound like it was recorded over 40 years ago. They always seem to just hold on to Mysterious Traveller of the base melody that it still feels like a tune rather than "a one man band falling down a flight of stairs" - as a friend of mine once described modern jazz! If Michael Buble is your idea of Jazz this would likely be a Mysterious Traveller but if you enjoy instrumental jazz of any period you should be able to get into the groove of this album. In the case of pianist/keyboardist Tigran Hamasyan, potent jazz improvisation fuses with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. Tigran is one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists of his generation. Tigran’s fresh sound is marked by an exploration of time signatures, charged dynamics, the shifting between acoustic and electric modes of expression, all undergirded by an affinity to the grind of heavy metal. Born in Gyumri, Armenia, in 1987, Tigran grew up in a household that was full of music—his father more of a rock fan while his uncle was a huge jazz buff. When he was just a toddler, Tigran gravitated to tape players and the piano instead of regular childhood toys, and by the time he was 3, he was working his way through figuring out songs on piano by the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Queen. His jazz tastes early on were informed by Miles Davis’s fusion period, and then around the age of 10 when his family moved to Yerevan, he came to discover the classic jazz songbook under the aegis of his teacher Vahag Hayrapetyan, who had studied with Barry Harris. Tigran chose to study music. While he studied classical music at an Armenian high school geared toward music studies, Tigran continued to grow on his own as a jazz pianist.

It’s the fall of 1975, and Blood, Sweat & Tears drummer Bobby Colomby has flown a virtually unknown Jaco from Ft. Lauderdale to New York to record his debut with jazz luminaries Hubert Laws, Herbie Hancock, Don Alias, Wayne Shorter, and Lenny White. The product of those sessions, the soulful, eclectic stunner simply titled Jaco Pastorius, would shake the bass world to its foundations, of course, but the album cover—with its bold lettering across a no-nonsense black & white portrait by Don Hunstein—might suggest that the unsmiling young maestro was overly serious about making a good first impression. That wasn’t true at all. “It was wild,” says Return To Forever drummer Lenny White of the sessions in October 1975. “Basically, we would play, do a take, and go outside and play basketball.” “We could have done it on bicycles with microphones, and he would have played it perfectly,” remembers producer Colomby, still impressed four decades later. Far from nervous, in fact, 23-year-old Jaco was natural, relaxed, and in his element. “I walked into the studio, and Jaco’s eyes were lit up because he had found home—this was the level he belonged on,” recalls trombonist/musical direc- tor Peter Graves.     2016-10-27 08:00 CEST Oddjob tolkar Weather Report på nytt album Oddjob släpper nytt album den 25 november och har den här gången valt att tolka sina husgudar Weather Report. Den 2 december kan man se bandet framföra låtarna live på Fashing i Stockholm. I år firar det klassiska skivbolaget Amigo Musik 50 år och eftersom Oddjob gav ut sina tre första album där (bland annat Grammisvinnande debutalbumet ”Oddjob”) fick bandet en förfrågan om att släppa en EP för att fira detta jubileum. Under en längre tid har bandet haft en idé om att tolka och hylla en av sina husgudar; det legendariska jazzfusionbandet Weather Report, och detta var ett utmärkt tillfälle att förverkliga den drömmen. De har valt ut låtar som inte är de mest uppenbara hittarna utan snarare musik som de kände både utmanade bandet och samspelade med det Oddjobska soundet och svänget. Musiken är hämtad från deras kanske mest kreativa period 1974- 1978 med albumen Mysterious Traveller, Tale Spinnin´, Black Market, Heavy Weather och Mr. Gone. Albumet "Oddjob Plays Weather Report" släpps digitalt den 25 november och firas med en spelning på jazzklubben Fasching den 2 december. Den kommer även ges ut i begränsad upplaga på 10" vinyl i ett samarbete med Headspin Recordings i början av 2017. It is presented in a progressive manner. Chapters two to four identify and discuss each of the three styles separately in terms of the research undertaken in the preparation of this thesis. Chapter 2 discusses, through a close examination of selected compositions and recordings, both Weather Report and Herbie Hancock as representing source material for research and compositional study in terms of melody, harmony and orchestration from the 1970s jazz-fusion genre. Chapter 3 examines breakbeat and Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) drum rhythm programming through both technique and musical application. Chapter 4 presents an examination of selected contemporary Electronic Dance Music (EDM) techniques and discusses their importance in current electronic music styles. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 each present an original composition based on the application and synthesis of the styles and techniques explored in the previous three chapters, with each composition defined by proportions of influence from each of the three styles as in the Venn diagram shown in the introduction.
