Popular reviews. A rare and ultimately ridiculous exploitation hybrid of a racial drama with 80's low-budget action fare starring Steve James of American Ninja fame. In a small Southern town in 1966, a racist and out-of-control white Sheriff starts shooting black men at the slightest provocation. At the same time, 3 soldiers, led by Steve James, escape a court-martial and end up in this racist hellhole. They decide to train all the young black men into an ad hoc infantry and take over the town, gathering all the whites in a local church and demanding press attention. Except once they have power over the town, things start going sideways when greed and lust for revenge take over. It's hard to describe just… Steve James arrives in a town run by a murderous, racist sheriff and teaches the black citizen's to fight back. It's mostly a drama but James does get the chance to kick some ass. After their times at Cannon Films had ended, director Sam Firstenberg(REVENGE OF THE NINJA,CYBORG COP) and star Steve James(AMERICAN NINJA,TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A.) reunited for this Straight-To-VHS video late 60s-set fare that proved how strongly the days of blaxploitation still thrived alive and well,as three escaped black military prisoners that are led by James flee away from the military police forces and hide out in a small Georgia town that is plagued by the crooked police forces there that are led by a murderous racist sheriff([the Alex Jones looking] Tony Frank[THOMPSON'S LAST RUN,ON THE BORDERLINE]) who is the type of guy that shoots any black person in his sights, driving James and his two allies to train the town's black… Not exactly a good film, but a real odd mix of social problem film and physical action. Steve James is a black major in hiding who decides to help a small black community terrorized by white authorities by kidnapping all local white citizens. It is even weirder than this description makes it sound. To bad it lost its nerve in the end, but it is a fascinating piece of confused angry agitprop. Directed by Sam Firstenberg betwen Cannon assigments. After reading that book about Sam Firstenberg’s career I now have to track down movies I haven’t see. Riverbend is one of them (I guess Spider 2 is also one of them). Steve James never had the career he wanted and it’s a shame. This movie is not the best vehicle for him to sell his acting chops but since he didn’t made that much movies, this one is as good as anything. It’s an odd mix of action, racial drama and bad music.
