Nicknamed “Mr. Longtail” for his unusually thick and long tail, Whirlaway had a penchant for running all over the track. His jockey, Eddie Arcaro, is the only jockey to have ridden two Triple Crown winners, Whirlaway and Citation, both owned by Calumet Farm. 29

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day In the 1940s, the Cole Brothers Circus wintered at the Kentucky State Cover for the U.S. 22c Saddlebred Horse stamp issued September Fairgrounds in Louisville, KY. The circus purchased the Saddlebred stallion Lee 25, 1985 and is accompanied by the First Day Cover. Rose McAdams in 1941. He shared the same sire as WGC CHSweetheart On Parade. A show horse before he became a circus star, Lee Rose McAdams won fourth place in the five-gaited three-year-old division of the 1940 Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show. 34

This was an art supplement included in Chicago’s “Tribune” newspaper from October Morris’ inspiration for the piece came from the Bible in Job chapter of 1902. The paper describes the scene “on one of the most popular promenades in 39: speaking of the war horse of Job whose neck was “clothed with Chicago—the Lake Shore drive at a point in Lincoln park where it fringes the shore thunder…who rejoiceth in his strength,…He mocketh at fear, and is not of Lake Michigan and where the famous high bridge crossing the lagoon, known as affrighted.” 40 Suicide bridge, is visible in the distance.” The woman rides side saddle, an unusual pose for the artist.

One of only five known designs of Big Ben Smoking Tobacco advertising posters sporting an American 18” T x 25.5” W. Saddlebred. Thulstrup was a leading illustrator of his day for many magazines, including 30 years with Harper’s Weekly. He is known for his military scenes as well as 39 creating some of the most noted scenes of daily life.

Featured on page 69 of Portraitures of Horses, this is a beautiful vintage lithograph from the George Ford Morris estate of the foundation sire The Godolphin Arabian. To create this image, Morris was inspired by the paintings done by the horse in his time and his knowledge of the Thoroughbred, which gives the image it’s life-like quality. His feline companion adds an 47 intimate feeling to the image.

55 GEORGE FORD MORRIS (American, 1873 – 1960) The

Lithograph. 18.5” T x 22” W. This vintage lithograph from the George Ford Morris estate is featured on page 68 of Portraitures of Horses. The Darley Arabian 56 was one of the three dominant foundation sires. This bay Arabian horse was bought in Aleppo, Syria by Thomas Darley in 1704 and CARLOS ARRIOLA 55 shipped to England as a present for his brother. The Darley Arabian (Guatemalan, b. 1966) was the leading sire in Great Britian and Ireland in 1722 and most 38.5” T x 29” W. Saddlebreds can be traced to this beautiful horse. Carlos Arriola is a well-known painter in Guatemala. He focuses on several subjects including wildlife, fish, and equestrian paintings. This work is an excellent example of his detailed painting style, capturing the personality of this black horse.

12” T x 11” W x 4” D. Charcoal. Signed and inscribed by the artist, “From original sketch done in Paris in 1925.” 28.5” T x 34” W. A signed wire sculpture of a liver chestnut Saddlebred. This is an excellent example of Dawn Klein’s work. One of George Ford Morris’ most recognizable works, Battling Pegases, is featured on page 264 of the book Portraitures of Horses. Morris composed this charcoal for a specific reason. Shortly after arriving in Paris in 1924, some of the French artists said Morris copied his horses from photographs, as no one could draw them as he does from life. To prove his detractors wrong, he created this charcoal from his imagination. He knew it would be impossible for the critics to say this fantasy pieces had been done from a photograph. Born To Love was the 1938 Champion Junior Five-Gaited mare. He was the 1936 One of Spindletop Farm and owner Pansy Yount’s and manager Cape Grant’s great breeding stallions. Beau Peavine was Five-Gaited World’s Grand Champion with trainer Cape Grant riding for owner Pansy Yount’s Spindletop Farm, Lexington, the 1936 World’s Champion Five-Gaited Stallion. Beginning in 1938, Beau Peavine’s youngsters won awards in foal classes Kentucky. Chief Of Spindletop was actually registered by Pansy’s husband, the late Miles Frank Yount, as Chief Of Spindle and his bloodline comes to horses of the present day through such stallion sons as Beau Le Rose Peavine, Beau Yount, Top (two words). It was Pansy Yount who insisted on showing him as Chief Of Spindletop (one word). Christiana King and Yekcohs.
