31 Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY AWARD NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED 4317 Camden Avenue San Mateo, CA 94403-5007 (650) 341-7786 or (415) 777-0212 Fax: (650) 372-0279 e-mail: [email protected] website: www.emmysf.tv Hold for Release: 7:30 P.M., Thursday, April 18, 2002 31st Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY AWARD NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED The 31st Annual Northern California Area EMMY Award Nominations were announced tonight at Martuni's in San Francisco, as well as the Tied House in San Jose, the River City Brewing Co. in Sacramento, the Elbow Room in Fresno, and on the Internet. The EMMY is awarded by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. San Francisco/Northern California is one of the eighteen chapters awarding local Emmys. Northern California is composed of television and cable stations from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries were aired during the 2001 calender year. This year 537 entries were received in 48 categories. The ballots were tallied by accounting firm of Spalding & Company from San Francisco. Congratulations to KTVU Fox 2 for taking home 32 nominations. Channel 2 was followed by KPIX 5 with 19; KRON4 with 12, and KGO ABC7, KQED 9 and Fox Sports Net with 11 each. The Sacramento leader was KXTV with 10 nominations, followed by KCRA with 9. Ten individuals tied with 4 nominations each. They are: Barton Bishoff (KNTV), Lynn R Friedman (KGO), Jennifer Franklin (Fox Sports Net), Leslie Griffith (KTVU), Mark Ibanez (KTVU), Deanne Moenster (KTVU), Tom Pellack (Fox Sports Net), Steve Shlisky (KTVU), George Watson (KTVU), and Rita Williams (KTVU). The EMMY statues will be handed out at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on Saturday, May 18th. Tickets for the event are $85, with a $10 discount to Academy members until May 4th, and $95, with a $10 discount to Academy members after May 4th. The event will be hosted by Allen Denton, anchor at NBC-3, and Vicki Liviakis, anchor at KRON 4. The evening starts at 4pm with a no host reception in the Theatre Lobby followed by “EMMY 2002, Your Finest Hour” at 5pm in the Theatre. The party moves to the Exploratorium at 8pm for a buffet dinner and dancing with the band, "Full Motion".     1 50th Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY® AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED The 50th Annual Northern California Area EMMY® Awards were presented Saturday evening, June 5th for the second time via webcast only. The EMMY® Award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). San Francisco/ Northern California is one of the nineteen chapters awarding regional Emmy® statues. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries aired during the 2020 calendar year. A total of 912 entries were received, 765 English and 195 Spanish in 68 English Categories and 34 Spanish Categories. Nominations were announced on May 5th with 195 English and 76 Spanish. Electronic ballots were submitted by a minimum of seven peer judges from other NATAS chapters and were sent directly to our accountant. The Spanish and English awards are judged and scored separately and then presented at the ceremony. 353 Emmy® statues were handed out to 263 individuals. The top two recipients were Maikel D'Agostino, Photograpoher/Editor, KUVS Unvision 19, Sacramento with ten, and Jonathan Bloom, Video Journalist, KNTV NBC Bay Area, with Six. The Emmy® is awarded to individuals but there is a lot of interest in the station counts: KNTV NBC Bay Area took home 16 for the English contest and KUVS Univision 19 with 12 for the Spanish contest. The overall Excellence Emmy® awards went to KNTV NBC Bay Area, English and KUVS Univision 19, Spanish. The prestigious Governors’ Award, the highest honor a regional chapter can award was presented to Wayne Freedman, Reporter, KGO ABC 7, San Francisco.

The Emmy® Award honors excellence in all fields of television production. KGO ABC 7 News Anchor, Cheryl Jennings, was presented the Governors’ Award, the highest honor a regional chapter can bestow. This is a lifetime achievement award for service to the community and television industry. Three station awards were presented. Overall Excellence went to KGO ABC 7. KGO ABC 7 also received the Community Service Award for “End Hunger Now.” News Excellence was awarded to KPIX CBS 5, “CBS 5 Eyewitness News.” The recipients of the coveted Evening Newscast Emmy® Awards went to: Large Markets: “ABC 7 News at 6:00,” KGO ABC 7, and “Noticias Univision 14 Solo A las Once,” KDTV Univision 14, San Francisco; Medium Markets: “Action News at Six,” KFSN ABC 30, and “Noticias 21 Evening Newscast,” KFTV Univision 21, Fresno; Smaller Markets: “KSBW Action News 8,” KSBW 8, Salinas.
