    Alpine Convention WG UNESCO World Heritage Background study Alpine Sites and the UNESCO World Heritage Background Study 15 August 2014 Alpine Convention WG UNESCO World Heritage Background study Executive Summary The UNESCO World Heritage Committee encouraged the States Parties to harmonize their Tentative Lists of potential World Heritage Sites at the regional and thematic level. Consequently, the UNESCO World Heritage Working Group of the Alpine Convention was mandated by the Ministers to contribute to the harmo- nization of the National Tentative Lists with the objective to increase the potential of success for Alpine sites and to improve the representation of the Alps on the World Heritage List. This Working Group mainly focuses on transboundary and serial transnational sites and represents an example of fruitful collaboration between two international conventions. This background study aims at collecting and updating the existing analyses on the feasibility of poten- tial transboundary and serial transnational nominations. Its main findings can be summarized in the following manner: - Optimal forum. The Alpine Convention is the optimal forum to support the harmonisation of the Tentative Lists and subsequently to facilitate Alpine nominations to the World Heritage List. - Well documented. The Alpine Heritage is well documented throughout existing contributions in particular from UNESCO, UNEP/WCMC, IUCN, ICOMOS, ALPARC and EURAC. The contents of these materials are synthesized, updated and presented in the present study. - Official sources. Only official sources, made publicly available by the UNESCO World Heritage Cen- tre, were used in this study. The Tentative Lists are not always completely updated or comparable and some entries await to be completed or revised.

The vineyards of the Vaud region in Switzerland lie along Lake Geneva. MAUDE RION Before going off to Switzerland this spring, I was fortunate to attend a dinner in New York held by the Swiss Wine Commission to show off modern viniculture from a country whose wines are so rarely written about—not from a lack of interest but from a lack of Swiss wines to write about. As I learned over dinner at Nomad in New York with several Swiss vintners, the problem is that the Swiss pretty much drink every drop of wine they make, with only about two percent exported to the rest of the world. This was particularly disappointing because the wines I tasted that evening were of such high quality and varietal caliber. With a dish of foie gras was served a Provins Valais Petite Arvine 2015 from Valais, and Château d’Auvernier Chardonnay 2017 from Neuchâtel; with a mushroom dish two vintages (2013 and 2016) of Jean- René Germanier Balavaud Cayas Réserve Syrahs from Valais; with a beef and Swiss chard Angelo Delea Carato Merlot 2015 from Ticino and Valais Mundi Sa Electus Red Blend 2015, from Valais; with the cheese course of Sbrinz, Domaine La Colombe Petit Clos Chasselas La Cȏte 2017 from Vaud and Château d’Auvernier Chasselas 2018 from Neuchâtel; finally, a chocolate cake with Domaine La Colombe Pinot Noir 2017 from Vaud and Vini Delea La Bruna Grappa from Ticino.

    Six Wineries in the Canton of Vaud You Have to Visit in 2019 The Canton of Vaud is the second largest wine producing canton in Switzerland. It is a home to more than 450 wine makers (vignerons in French), and almost 4,000 hectares of vineyards that extend from Geneva to Montreux. This canton also attracts individuals that combine their love of hiking with a perfect glass of Chasselas in Epesses. The canton is split into 4 wine-producing areas: La Côte, Chablais, Côtes de l’Orbe, and Lavaux. The La Côte region stretches along Lake Geneva’s western basin between Morges and Nyon. The Chablais region is located along the eastern bank of the Rhône River between Villeneuve and Bex. The northern part of the Vaud brings together the terms of origin of Bonvillars, Côtes de l’Orbe, and Vully along the banks of Lake Neuchâtel. @suissepic The Lavaux region extends from Lausanne to Vevey-Montreux.
