Wall climbs, waterslides and lots of mud sounds like a laundry nightmare, but for some ‘‘Tough Kids’’ it was the perfect end to the term. Almost 1000 students from 26 primary schools in the Rangitikei region crowded into Ohingaiti’s McIntrye Reserve on Friday, Sept- ember 23 for the annual Downs Group Tough Kid run. Racing in split-year groups or mixed teams, the boys and girls raced around a course scattered with hay bales, tires, bog pits and other obstacles, which ended with a waterslide just before the finish line. Organiser Rachel O’Connor from Sport Whanganui said the course on the reserve was inclus- ive of all the year groups. ‘‘It’s an awesome venue for utilising the natural resources.’’ O’Connor said that the day was all about getting out there and having a go. ‘‘It’s all about getting the kids active - they get a bit of mud on The water slide near the end of the course was enjoyed by all. Five people received Palmerston North’s highest accolade last week. Stewart Collis, Ian Gray, Jenny Mair, Margaret May and Isabelle Poff-Pencole were recognised in the Convention Centre with Civic Awards for what mayor Grant Smith said were ‘‘extraordinary contributions to the city’’. Collis had devoted much of his life to serving the farming com- munity, establishing the Feilding Rural Trading Society, now Farmlands, and serving on its board for 12 years. His work with the Manawatu Hearing Association contributed to hearing loss eventually being recognised as a disability. A new workshop series is looking to stem the tide of testosterone in engineering by encouraging young girls who show interest in the field. About a tenth of New Zealand engineers are women, so the Hello Cafe workshop organisers want to increase this number by teaming up project groups of 10-13 year-old girls with women working in sci- ence, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Hello Cafe is a series of 10 workshops in seven cities around the country, including Palmer- ston North. It is set to start in two weeks. Organiser and Massey University engineering lecturer Jane Goodyer said she hoped the girls would get to know their engineering mentors over the course, and keep in touch with them for advice and support throughout their schooling. A manufacturing engineer by trade, Goodyer said perceptions of STEM subjects as male dominated industries could turn girls off pur- suing study at a young age. WALLY RICHARDS

Good old fashioned gardening could be making a comeback. While more people are rediscovering the joys and benefits of growing their own vegetables, it’s also heartening to hear that children are being encouraged into gardening. The encouragement I received as a youngster with my own little patch of garden and other garden chores helped me into a lifelong interest and career. Every few days it would be my job to examine all the cabbage plants for caterpillars, pluck them off, and put them into an old tin before feeding them to the chickens. Of late too many young chil- dren have not had the opportunity to ‘‘play’’ at gardening because their parents do not have a garden of any consequence, or much expertise to pass on. Primary schools have picked up this baton by setting up veg- etable gardens where their young students can learn a bit about plants. Garden industry compan- ies and organisations have also tried to entice young people into gardening by promoting growing With School holidays coming up, spring is a great time to find ways of turning children onto gardening - a long-term worthwhile skill. GEORGE HEAGNEY

Campbell Stewart won the under- 20 boys points race on the final day of the New Zealand secondary schools road cycling champion- ships, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Palmerston North Boys’ High School team to secure the overall title. Stewart won the points race at Manfeild on Monday, the last race of the three-day event in Feilding, but Boys’ High were just pipped for third place overall, beaten by Auckland Grammar School, while Takapuna Grammar won the overall title. That was despite Boys’ High winning the prestigious team time trial at Koputaroa on Saturday. Palmerston North Girls’ High School finished fourth on the overall standings, having won the crown last year. Waikato Diocesan School for Girls were the winners this year, well clear of Epsom Girls’ Gram- mar School in second and St Peter’s School (Cambridge) in third. Ellesse Andrews of St Peter’s won the under-20 girls points race, with Libby Arbuckle (Girls’ High) the best Manawatu rider in seventh place. Boys’ High’s Madi Hartley- Brown won the under-17 boys race and Angus Claasen (Boys’ High) was fourth in the under-16 race.
