W XVI i XVII w. Włochy stanowiły cel podróży studyjnych wielu holenderskich i flamandzkich artystów (wśród nich m.in. Stowarzyszenie to skupiało artystów zagranicznego pochodzenia – głównie holenderskiego i flamandzkiego. Członkami grupy bywali też jednak przedsta- wiciele innych sztuk i cechów rzemieślniczych – wśród nich rysow- nicy, grawerzy, rzeźbiarze, złotnicy, a nawet poeci 1. -
Priests in the Military Orders

Many people therefore tend to view the weapon-bearing knight-brethren as their only real members. apart from the fact that the military orders did not just admit knights but also took on sergeant-brethren («frères sergeants») who were not members of the nobility for both military work and goods management, nearly all of the military or- ders also had a number of priests in their midst: the priest-brethren. This is understandable because without them they never have been able to combine their military existence with a spiritual way of life. The particularly dual identity of the military orders - military and spiritual under one roof - manifested itself in all three of the great military orders: the knights Templar, the knights of St John and the Teutonic order. we find both sorts of brethren among them, although the relationship be- tween them could vary greatly per order. whereas the knights Templar only had very few priest-brethren or order chaplains, something that came to light somewhat embarrassingly after the arrests of 13072, the Teutonic order had nearly two priest-brethren for each knight-brother in the bailiwicks (the or- 1 This article is a translation and revision of R.J. An ABC of Heritage Libraries 3 Krant // Newspaper Heritage Libraries Often Hold Extensive Collections of Newspapers and Periodicals
AN b OF HERITAGE LIBRARIESC ACQUISITIE // ACQUISITION Each heritage library has its individual thematic or regional profile. Collections are expanded and enriched via carefully considered acquisitions and a well thought-out donation policy. BIBLIOFIEL // BIBLIOPHILE Many heritage libraries owe thanks to the zeal of bibliophile collectors. They also preserve modern bibliophile editions, books executed in exceptional formats. CATALOGUS // CATALOGUE A library’s assets are described in a catalogue according to strict rules. This used to be done on index cards kept in special cabinets. Today, online catalogues are used, allowing readers to locate publications from home. DIGITALISERING // DIGITISATION Important, vulnerable or frequently used titles are digitised to protect them and make them more available. Originals no longer need to be manipulated and digital copies can be accessed globally via the internet. Automatic character recognition allows ‘paper’ text to be searched. EX LIBRIS // EX LIBRIS Collectors often paste or stamp an ex libris with their name and a figurative, emblematic image in their books. Such provenance marks are also found in historical books and serve as a primary source for researchers of the reading cultures of the past. 2 FLANDERS HERITAGE LIBRARY FORMAAT // FORMAT Printed books are made up of quires, which can have varying formats. The largest ‘folio’ format consist of four pages. It is created by folding a sheet of paper once. An additional fold results in a ‘quarto’ format of eight pages and a third fold in an ‘octavo’ format of sixteen pages. GOUDSTEMPELING // GOld TOOLING Books used to be bound in leather or parchment. The binding was sometimes tooled, using gold leaf to give books their characteristic sparkle. -

His current research project explores Protestant and Catholic memories about the French civil wars. [email protected] Abstract This article explores how painters responded to the crisis on the Antwerp art market in the 1580s. Although scholarship has stressed the profound crisis and subsequent emigration wave, prosopographical analysis shows that only a mino- rity of painters left the city. Demand for Counter-Reformation artworks allowed many to pursue their career in Antwerp, while others managed to survive the crisis by relying on cheap apprentices and the export of mass-produced paintings. Emigrant painters, on the other hand, minimised the risk of migration by settling in destinations that already had close artistic ties to Antwerp, such as Middelburg. Prosopographical analysis thus allows for a more nuanced understanding of artistic careers in the Low Countries. Keywords: Antwerp painters, career strategies, art market, guild of St. -
