The magazine now looks clean and bright and is more appealing. A few of you told me you would prefer to see something a bit ‘lighter’ on the back page so this month I’ve given a special page to Julibate! It would be really good to use the back page for local photographs or artwork. Please send articles and I’ll do my best to include them at some time in the future. Meanwhile, there’s a lot going on the Forest Edge area so there’s no excuse for staying home too often. Don’t forget this magazine is also available on-line. Electricity Saving Device (Scam)

Elderly people are being targeted with a scam involving an Electricity Saving Device.

People have been telephoned and offered a special device to save them electricity, the unit costs £99, which they are told, that it can save that amount in a quarter. This is obviously not so. When the device arrives, when plugged in, does absolutely nothing. The company supplying it is from the USA. Called ITDEV Corp, 57a Lafayette Ave, suite #4, Suffern, New York, 10901.

Usually a couple of days after the unit has been delivered the person receives a telephone call from a company called Claims Management to say that they have been the subject of a scam and that they should pay £160 for solicitors fees and are entitled to compensation of £1120. They are told to purchase a UKASH voucher for this amount and that they will receive a cheque in the post within a few days. There is no such company as Claims Management and is also part of the scam.

I have been notified of one elderly lady receiving the device without her knowledge of purchase. As she had not purchased the device, she went straight to the bank and they confirmed that £99 had been taken from her account. She explained that she had not made the purchase they realised that her card had been fraudulently used and cancelled her card and issued a new one and refunded the £99. The Bank ( Barclays) stated that they had come across this before. Trading Standards are aware of the situation.

If you know of any incidents please report it to Trading Standards or the Police straight away.

STAMP – EDE AT THE POST OFFICE

Unprecedented scenes of panic and pandemonium have been seen throughout the months of March and April in the hallowed halls of Mrs King’s Stamp & Send Emporium.

The seeds of anarchy were sown late in two thousand and eleven when the hint of a massive price-hike slipped into the nation’s consciousness like a late Dad at the back of a school Nativity performance where his son was playing second shepherd.

Her Maj Her Self and Me My Self were also complicit. Mrs K giving the Royal Thumbs-up or Regal Wave of the Velvet Glove or whatever when the flunkey visited Buck House in October seeking Sovereign assent to the scam and me inadvertently setting the hare running by way of a Chinese whisper sort of a scenario. You will all remember, I am sure, that First World War joke when a message was sent down the line to “Send reinforcements! We are going to advance,” when it reached the other end had become, “Send three and four pence. We are going to a dance.” Well I’m sure I must have said something like “There’s no need to worry. I’ve got plenty of stock,” which ended up as “You’d better all hurry. I’m empty of the lot.”

Announcements of shortages of things, whether real or perceived, tend to have the same outcome. I’m certain if I started a rumour (not true of course) that there was a scarcity of sugar at Shirley’s everyone, regardless of the quantity of Tate & Lyle lumps in their larders, would rush down to Central Stores like a plague of lactose, loving locusts and clear her entire stock in seconds thus fulfilling the prophesy.

So, once news officially came out that stamps were indeed going up and by a massive fourteen pence (that’s an increase of thirty-nine per cent Missus!) the flood -gates were well and truly open. Queues formed outside the office, at one time blocking Harold’s trucks from going about their legitimate trade; fights broke out on pension day and Forest Edge News reporters were everywhere inventing on the spot quotes for the next edition.

“I don’t actually need any stamps at the moment,” said one red faced punter emerging from beneath an unseemly heap of pensioners, “but I’m going to buy 6 Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) enough to see me through the next three Christmases and just hope they don’t ever come down in price!”

Businesses were happily bankrupting themselves not to be caught short.

Orphans were taking money out of the pot to buy just one second-class stamp so they didn’t feel left out.

To my shame, spotting the main chance, I thought I would try and set the same ball rolling on the confectionery front. When the shop was quite full I feigned a phone call to a rep and announced in a loud voice, “Oh! There’s a shortage of Mars Bars on the horizon is there?” my eyes wide open and swivelling over the crowd with a knowing nod of my head, “Better put me down for another score of outers (boxes of four dozen bars).” Sadly, though, people don’t seem that bothered about this succulent icon (the equivalent cost of a first-class stamp at the new improved rates interestingly) these days and I now have nearly a thousand on hand with a sell-by-date of the end of May. So hurry while stocks last!

So, postage panic at the post office. The shop was heaving most days and every transaction ended with an embarrassed cough and an exclamation dripping with self depreciating innocence, “Oh yes perhaps I ought to buy a few stamps. Put me down for a hundred just to be on the safe side. Is it alright if I store them in my garage?” Everyone and their grandmas have now already purchased enough stamps to see them through the harshest of Yuletide-Well-Wishing for years to come. The result of course will be a lonely couple of weeks down here at the post office come Christmas time.

Oh, hold on. What’s that I hear? A shortage of tinsel in December.

Bring it on!

NEWS FROM OUR VILLAGE AGENTS Around this time of year, local Parish Councils hold their Annual Parish Meetings. Local groups and organisations are invited to attend and report on their activities over the last year and it is always interesting to hear what goes on in the village. I gave my report which I thought you may be interested to read:- Annual Parish Meeting - Village Agent Report - I’ve had yet another busy but very enjoyable year in my role of Village Agent. There are some changes ahead for the scheme – but all positive. We are now into our 6th year, and have secured funding for the foreseeable future. From April, following the recruitment of a further 6 agents, we will be county-wide, covering every parish and for the first time, the towns of Cheltenham and . We will be known as Village and Community Agents to reflect this change. New publicity, a new logo and Village & Community Agent maps will soon be available and I will make sure Parish Councils have copies. We also have a new Village and Community Agent website with useful information for the public as well as Agents themselves. Behind the scenes Agents have access to the gateway form which enables us to contact agencies across Gloucestershire to access the help we need for our clients. The website can be viewed at www.villageagents.org.uk. I feel very privileged to be made so welcome in the communities I work with. Obviously the work I do for clients in my villages is strictly confidential, so although I try to be a visible presence in all my parishes, you won’t see, or be aware of the majority of the work I’m doing behind the scenes. The social groups I attend at Huntley Village Hall are a valuable way for me to contact older people within the parish. After visiting these groups, I frequently go home with a list of jobs to do! Parish Magazines have also proved to be an extremely valuable means of reaching many people in the communities I would not otherwise meet. I receive enquiries from individuals who have read my articles and then make contact with me either by email or telephone. The Village Agent scheme has certainly established itself in the rural communities, and I hope I am able to continue to be of service. My next drop in session will be Thursday 7th June 10 – 12 noon at Tibberton Church Room. PLEASE NOTE ALL FUTURE DROP IN SESSIONS WILL BE HELD BI- MONTHLY. For news, events and dates of my drop in sessions visit my village agent section at www.tibberton-Gloucestershire.org.uk Hilary Lyon, Village Agent for Rudford, Highleadon, Tibberton, Taynton, Churcham and Huntley. 8 Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) GDA EQUIPMENT DAY CHANGE As from 1 st April 2012, Gloucestershire Deaf Association’s equipment day is changing from Thursday to Wednesday. The first date was Wednesday 4th April. The times remain the same: 10am – 3pm. FAULTY BUS PASSES A small number of bus passes containing a chip have been found to be faulty. When used on Stagecoach buses, they do not register when placed on the scanning plate on the bus. Bus drivers have been told by letter that they are to accept these faulty passes, unless they are out of date. Passes can be renewed by visiting a local library in the usual way. The renewal will be free, unless the pass has been damaged or lost, in which case a fee of £5 will be levied. This problem does not affect local buses, which operate internal routes around the Forest, because they do not use a scanning plate. Any queries can be addressed by contacting the GCC bus pass section at Shire Hall on 01452 426343. THE BIG BAND SOUND On Saturday 16th June the Alzheimer’s Society is hosting a Grand Jubilee Tea Dance at Churchdown Community Centre with a live 18 piece big band and an indoor street party atmosphere to celebrate the Jubilee. The event is open to anyone with or without memory concerns, their family and friends. Following hot on the heels of Dementia Awareness Week it is hoped that many people will be able to come along with their families and enjoy an afternoon out together. The event is being held between 2-4pm, and you don’t even have to dance if you don’t want to, just come along and soak up the atmosphere. Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children, to include an afternoon tea served at your table. For your tickets please call the Gloucestershire office of the Alzheimer’s Society on 01452 525222. Free parking is available at the centre with easy access for wheelchair users. GRCC VIBRANT VILLAGE OF THE YEAR 2012 The 2012 GRCC Vibrant Village of the Year competition is an opportunity for communities to showcase their village. We want to find villages, irrespective of their size, that make the most of local opportunities to sustain or enhance the quality of life of all their residents. The competition is open to all villages with a parish council or parish meeting and is designed to recognise and celebrate the hard work being carried out in Gloucestershire. This year’s competition includes a new category: Most Hospitable and Inclusive Community. The other categories are Best Community Project/Initiative, Healthy and Active Community and Most Resilient Community. The competition has cash prizes totalling £3,000 which will be awarded to the winners and runners up at the Awards Ceremony at Colesbourne Park, Nr Cheltenham on the evening of Thursday 12th July 2012. Additional awards may also be presented at the judges’ discretion. All villages participating will automatically be entered into the prize draw to win a £50 gift voucher. All entries will be invited to the ceremony.

GARDENING AND DIY TOOLS WANTED I’m still getting requests from local groups who need gardening or DIY tools. If you have any unused tools lurking in the shed or the attic, send me your name, phone number or email address and I will pass your contact details on to one of the groups who can then arrange to collect them from you. You don't stop laughing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop laughing! Take heed and pass these along to people who need a laugh!

An elderly woman died last month. Having never married, she requested no male pallbearers. In her handwritten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote, 'They wouldn't take me out while I was alive, I don't want them t o take me out when I'm dead.'

A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem . A small child replied, 'They couldn't get a baby-sitter.'

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to 'Honour thy father and thy Mother,' she asked, 'Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our Brothers and sisters?' Without missing a beat, one little boy answered, 'Thou shall not kill.'

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and she said, 'Johnny, what is the matter?' Little Johnny responded, 'I have pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife.'

13 Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) From Chris Sterry, Priest-in-Charge Designate By the time I arrive Easter will be long gone, but Eastertide will not. It always disappoints me a little that we never seem able to keep the 50 days of Eastertide, days of joy and celebration, with the same devotion that we keep the 40 days of Lent. When I was a teenager Eastertide finished on the 40th day with the Feast of the Ascension—40 days of Eastertide to balance the 40 days of Lent. Since then we have changed our patterns, and Eastertide now concludes on the Fiftieth Day—Pentecost. Both of them are such wonderful feasts, with much richness of meaning. Easter tells of new life, and new hope. What a wonderful time to begin a new ministry! Shortly after my Licensing we will celebrate the Ascension, when we remember our Lord’s return to his Father’s side in heaven. It reminds us not only of the intercession of Christ for us at the right hand of God, but also of the place he has prepared for each of us. Pentecost, or Whitsuntide—the real highlight of the season—celebrates that wonderful experience, fifty days after the resurrection, when the Apostles received the gift of the Spirit. It is often known as ‘The Birthday of the Church’. For forty days the Apostles spent time with the Risen Christ, eating and drinking and learning. For ten days after that they waited for ‘the promise of the Father’. Then, on Pentecost, they received that gift, that promise. Eleven frightened and faithless men (plus Matthias, the substitute) were transformed. Now they were full of joy and confidence, and a new community spread out from them with great rapidity. One of the things that attracted me to Forest Edge were these words on the benefice website was this statement “We are aiming to become 'Communities of joy and hope, love and laughter, invitation and welcome', which we know that we cannot do in our own strength so it must be, 'only through Jesus Christ'. We want everyone to come to know just how much God loves them.” That so much fits my own philosophy that Church should be open, welcoming, loving, but above all, fun. I cannot imagine the Trinity sitting around having earnest discussions. Laughter and joy is at the heart of God, and so, too, I firmly believe, it should it be at the heart of our community. I look forward to getting to know you, whether you are a weekly Churchgoer or not. The door is always open to all of you, and the Vicar is there for all of you. I look forward to the enormous privilege of a Parish priest to share in people’s joys

and sorrows. From reading FEN it seems to there are lots of social activities, meals, trips, gatherings etc—in short it looks like enormous fun! I look forward to joining in that fun, and sharing that joy which God so generously shares with all of us!

14 Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) On Good Friday

A group of about 40 people met at All Saints Church at 10.30am on Good Friday. Caroline Pascoe opened the act of worship with a prayer and a reading before distributing a sprig of rosemary to help us focus on remembering Jesus. We then sang “When I Survey The Wondrous Cross“ after which Bob Harris led over 30 of us (plus dogs) on the Walk of Witness up May Hill. We stopped about 5 times on the way up for readings and prayers and to give the cross bearers a chance to change over. When we reached the top of the hill we had the final reading and finished with The Lord's Prayer and the singing of “There is a Green Hill”. The lady in the wheelchair is Elsie Dolman. Elsie had been a faithful member of All Saints Church at Longhope until poor health and the sad loss of her husband prevented her from coming to church. She now lives in Manchester with her daughter. Elsie came back especially to take part in the Good Friday walk this and last year! Well done Elsie. After the walk back down we were invited to the Methodist chapel for tea or coffee and Hot Cross buns for which they deserve a big thank you. Angela Pengelly

Third, Wednesday, 16th May, 7.00pm for 7.30pm, we are meeting for an evening meal at The Beechwood Restaurant, RFDC Five Acres, Coleford. Fourth, Wednesday, 30th May, the Garden Visit will be at Lower Farm, Clifford's Mesne. Also, in August, Don and Ann Rich will host the American Supper at the Stud Farm, Blaisdon. Mr George Alway, from near Bristol, spoke on Sweet Peas, which he grows for show and for cut flowers. Little is known of their early cultivation, apart from genetic experiments. It was the Victorians in the 1850's who became keen on them and it was Henry Exford in the 1870's who first experimented with cross breeding. Popularity grew and by 1911 a competition sponsored by the Daily Mail for a £1000 prize drew 3,500 entries. (A huge sum in today's money). Seed companies then started breeding on a commercial scale but when they found it too costly, they now leave it to the amateur to carry on the work. Sweet Peas are not hard to grow. They are versatile, they can be trained up canes, along wires, allowed scramble over walls, or, be layered as a hedge. Those planted in October/November fare better than those planted later. The cardboard inner tubes of kitchen paper and toilet rolls make inexpensive root trainers. The whole tube can then be planted out without disturbing the roots as long as the cardboard is well soaked beforehand and the tube torn to let the roots grow free. If there is a late frost, let the plant thaw out naturally - they are tough. Some pests are always with us, mice eat the seed, greenfly infest the plants. He recommended mouse traps for the former and a preparation called 'Bug' (made from the residue left from rapeseed oil pressings which immobilises the greenfly and is harmless to their predators) for the latter. Then there are sparrows, who nip the buds, earwigs, pollen beetle and the mosaic disease brought by aphids. Slides of sweet peas amassed on show benches illustrated the fact that shows prefer whole colours. Mr Alway deplores the fact that breeding for size seems to mean loss of scent, one of the flowers' main attractions; he prefers and grows ripples and muilti-coloured for cut flowers; and, he recommends flowers be cut often as, otherwise, they quickly go to seed. His informative and interesting talk will, no doubt, inspire us to be more proactive in growing this pretty and delightfully scented plant. The competition was for five Easter biscuits. Congratulations to the many who tried their hand at baking. And the winners were Ann Rich, first place; Anne Pearson, second and Sue Davis, third. There was quite a bit of testing and tasting after the judging and not many biscuits made it back home. Sarah Jefferson Tel: 790238

18 Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) It’s not easy being a Blackburn Rovers Supporter! Hi everyone my name is Ray Bell and I have been here on Chapel Lane in Birdwood for over 40 years. My wife Heather and I live just by the Garden Centre. I’m afraid that despite a strong Christian upbringing I am currently a poor Christian. However Heather delivers the Forest Edge News in our local area so I always read and enjoy same. Hence I am aware that our designate Priest in Charge the Reverend Chris Sterry is an Honorary Lancastrian and a Blackburn Rovers Supporter to boot! Well Chris you will not be alone on the edge of the forest because despite being in West Gloucestershire since 1967 I remain a committed (but at a distance) supporter! And I have even played cricket against Colne. I came down to Gloucestershire from Lancashire to assist in building phases two and three of Gloucester Royal Hospital. I was born in the Town of Haslingden which is in the Rossendale Valley (originally a very important cotton manufacturing area) just over the moor from Blackburn. My family life during and after the Second World War revolved around the villages of Acre, Rising Bridge, and in particular Stonefold Church and Junior School plus Hazel Mill and Cotton. Family and the Church were vastly important. I did not see my father until I was five due to the war. Mum, Granddad, Grandma, and a vast array of Aunties and Uncles all worked in the mill and most other activity involved the Church and School in one way or another. Despite the very difficult times I was very well supported and cared for and have nothing but a host of happy memories of the time. My spectator memories of Ewood Park and Rovers are of the family enclosure with my father from the mid 50’s to the early 60’s. Famous Rovers Players I strongly remember, England Captain Ronnie Clayton, England Winger Brian Douglas, England Full Back Bill Eckersley and I saw Tommy Briggs Score 7 goals in a Match against Bristol Rovers, Still a Record! It will be a very sad day for me if Rovers are relegated from the Premiership this season. Heather and I enjoy living on the Edge of the Forest the community is very friendly and helpful and the local countryside is quite beautiful. I feel sure that Chris and his wife Joan will receive what we have enjoyed, friendship, encouragement and a very warm welcome in a “New beginning”. P.S. Which Saint’s life is celebrated on the 19th of April and which associated church not very far away has a very special Celebration this year?

An article from the Forest of Dean Mercury of 29th September 1916 caught my eye.

‘’Jack Cornwell Day’”

This was celebrated by the children of Longhope Council School as recommended by The Navy League. Mr Lester gave a history of Jack Cornwell and his brave deed, with lessons taught therefrom. The children showed their enthusiasm by so liberally subscribing that the headmaster was able to forward over 30 shillings in aid of the “Jack Cornwell Fund’’ So who was Jack Cornwell, and what was his ‘brave deed’? Schools all over Britain celebrated “Jack Cornwell Day” on 21st September 1916. Every child was encouraged to donate 1d. (one old penny) towards the fund which was used to provide a ward in his name for disabled sailors at the Star and Garter Home at Richmond. In return for donations commemorative stamps were given. Jack was an ordinary working class boy from Essex, born in 1900 to Eli and Lily Cornwell, one of six siblings. He was a keen Boy Scout and on leaving school

27 Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) became a delivery boy, then a dray boy for Whitbread’s Brewery. At the outbreak of war in 1914, Jack’s father re-enlisted in The Army, and Jack enlisted at the age of 15 in The Royal Navy. On 2nd May 1916 he joined H.M.S Chester and they steamed straight into The Battle of Jutland in the North Sea. Jack was on duty, responsible for setting the gun’s sights whose speed and precision would determine whether they were to hit or miss their target. Four German cruisers opened fire and Jack’s gun was one of the first to be hit. Jack suffered a serious wound to his chest. His Commanding Officer wrote “John Travers Cornwell was mortally wounded early in the action. He nevertheless remained standing alone at a most exposed post, quietly awaiting orders till the end of the action, with the gun’s crew dead and wounded all round him”. Jack died of his wounds on 2nd June 1916. In November Jack’s mother received her son’s Victoria Cross at Buckingham Palace from the King which today is on display at The Imperial War Museum in London. One of the six men commemorated on Longhope War Memorial who were lost in the Second World War, Lieutenant Commander Reginald W J Pringle Nicholson, R.N., also saw action in the North Sea in 1940. He was on H.M.S Glorious when it was hit by fire from the German battleship ‘Scharnhorst’ and sank with only 43 survivors out of a crew of about 1250. The other men commemorated from the Second World War are Fred Beard, Lawrence Lloyd, Charles Worner, James Wright and Kenneth Wright. If you have any memories or photographs of these men I would love to hear from you. For more information about Jack Cornwell go to www.scoutingmilestones.btinternet.co.uk/cornwell.htm

Membership now stands at 44. Unfortunately, the April walk was cancelled, but it is still hoped to take up the County challenge of a collective 209 miles, the distance (as the crow flies) between Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch where first WI was formed, and the Olympic stadium in London. This has to be achieved by the 16th September. We either need more walkers or longer walks! Carryl gave a brief report on the Annual Council meeting at the Cheltenham Town Hall, which she had recently attended with four members. The County Chair, Sue Wilson, reported that membership had increased by 170 and the formation of one new Institute. Hot off the press – Lesley Garrett to be star guest at Christmas Carol Concert. Sadly, we were well and truly beaten in the skittles match against Prestbury, but we still have the opportunity to compete in the Plate competition for the best “loser”. By a show of hands “Willow Christmas decorations” seemed to be the most popular subject for a one-day workshop in the autumn. Our speaker for the evening certainly had the wow factor – Ann Blagdon, Bellydancer! She appeared dressed in a galavaya, a long black ornate coat, which when removed revealed the most exquisite gold outfit, with swirling skirt and sparkling bra. She said that bellydancing is now taken more seriously as an art form since the days of Bernard Bresslaw in the “Carry on” films and the advert for Turkish delight. Bellydancing had originated in Northern India and spread throughout Asia in various guises. In 1926 bellydancing became more accepted as an art form and was greatly influenced by Isadora Duncan. She herself had come to bellydancing by chance. Having moved from Wales to London to Cheltenham and being very bored with her high profile job with a building society, she made the huge decision to hand in her notice without knowing what she wanted to do. Fate stepped in with an opportunity to take up bellydancing , she soon became hooked and started up her own classes followed by demonstrations, talks and performances. She is off to Luxor soon to learn more about her chosen art. Much to the relief of members, the only audience participation was a few sensuous arm and hand movements (whilst still sitting)!Wales has produced some fantastic rugby players, superb singers and powerful male voice choirs. They can now add to that list a dazzling bellydancer. Ann concluded with a beautiful performance of “Wings of Isis” Liz Johnson and Suzanne Noblett admitted to attending and enjoying bellydancing classes, and Suzanne gave a very warm and appreciative vote of thanks. Next meeting on 10th May we will be discussing the resolution - “Increase in training and employment of more midwives” - which is to be put to the AGM at the Royal Albert Hall at the end of May. Anyone interested in this particular subject would be most welcome to come along. Jean Walwin

36 Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) A Little Dog Angel

High up in the courts of heaven today a little dog angel waits; with the other angels he will not play, but he sits alone at the gates. "For I know my master will come" says he, "and when he comes he will call for me."

The other angels pass him by As they hurry toward the throne, And he watches them with a wistful eye as he sits at the gates alone. "But I know if I just wait patiently that someday my master will call for me."

And his master, down on earth below, as he sits in his easy chair, forgets sometimes, and whispers low to the dog who is not there. And the little dog angel cocks his ears and dreams that his master's voice he hears.

And when at last his master waits outside in the dark and cold, for the hand of death to open the door, that leads to those courts of gold, he will hear a sound through the gathering dark, a little dog angel's bark.

50 YEARS A LOCAL PREACHER On March 25th Tony Wakefield preached his last sermon in he circuit at May Hill to the congregation and friends who came to support him. It was exactly 50 years ago when he lived at May Hill with his young family that he felt the call to preach as his father had done before him. Thus his ministry began and ended at May Hill. During those years he must have made contact with many people as he moved several times. The Rev Minchin came to support him and gave an account of Tony's life during those years. Ruby his wife also took part in the service. Afterwards we retired to May Hill Monthly Mart the schoolroom for light refreshments and to make our final goodbyes and good wishes. The settled weather at the end of March brought some species back to this country from Africa a little earlier than normal, with chiffchaffs and blackcaps adding their songs to the dawn chorus by early April. Nightingales too migrate between Highnam Woods, where they breed in our spring, to Africa where they go to keep warm through the winter. They will be a major attraction at Highnam through May as this is one of the few places in Gloucestershire where they can be reliably found now. This year we are contributing to a national survey organised by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) for Nightingales. This will be a repeat of a survey organised by them in 1999, and the results will not only give us an answer to how many pairs there are in the country, but also allow comparison to the population size in 1999. For the RSPB it will give us even more information as we survey this species annually, so the national survey will allow us to compare the changes we have seen to the national changes. Of course to complete the surveys we have to spend some odd hours at the reserve, especially for nightingale which prefers the cover of dusk and dawn, and will even sing through the night! We also carry out point counts where we stand and listen for 5 minutes, recording everything we see and hear. The necessity for early mornings should be finished by the end of May though, and I’ll be around the reserve more at warmer times of the day – I look forward to meeting you there! Apart from the delightful bird song, you will notice now that there is a spectacle of wildflowers in bloom around the reserve. The bluebells have successfully pushed their way through, along with the cuckoo flower (Lady’s smock) and primroses. I look forward to my visits to the reserve in anticipation of what else is now showing itself. Of course, when it is warm enough, around these patches of flowers is where you will find the early butterflies. Orange tips and peacock butterflies have already been recorded in abundance, and as the weather settles (hopefully) in May there should be plenty more to add to the list. We have a few guided walks planned for the spring and summer, each of which will have a theme, but we will look at many different aspects of the reserve, so they are a great chance to find out more. Find out more at www.rspb.org.uk/ highnamwoods, e-mail [email protected] or phone us on 01594 526852. Hannah

43 Print to PDF without this message by purchasing novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/) Change Your Thinking It will take just 37 seconds to read this and change your thinking.. Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.. Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and colour of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every colour and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, 'Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.' Epilogue: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy. 'Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present .'
