1. Information of the Proposal

i. Name of Project – Proposal for diversion of 5.153 Ha Forest area for upgradation to two lanes with paved shoulder/four lane configurations of Digras-Darwha-Karanja from Km 0.000 to 74.351 in the State of Maharashtra.

iv. Aerial distance of project area from nearest Protected Areas – The proposed project alignment is passing through Karanja Sohal Blackbuck Wildlife Sanctuary.

v. Detailed Note on Project: -

The Government of India has decided to upgrade existing State Highway corridors having single lane/intermediate/two lane carriageway to two lane with paved shoulders/Four lane Configurations. In continuation of this, MORT&H has entrusted the work of preparation of Detailed Project Report of Digras- Darwha-Karanja State Highways to Public Works Department (Maharashtra). The project alignment is spanning through two districts with a total length of 74.351 Kms and through two talukas of Digras and Darwha of Yavatmal district & one Karanja taluka of Washim district.

The project alignment is an amalgamation of New SH-212 (Old SH-282) & New SH-213 (Old SH- 257) passing through Digras, Darwha & Karanja town forming an important artery for movement of goods from Chandrapur & Yavatmal District to Mumbai. Goods transported are cement from different factories located in Chandrapur District to Akola, Amravati & Mumbai & seasonal crops and agricultural products throughout the year from different places located in Yavatmal & Chadrapur.

It is appreciated that over a horizon of next 20-30 years, this road will serve a critical purpose of linking Yavatmal & Chandrapur to Mumbai & contributes substantially to the development of the local economy. Further a number of remote villages are also being provided connectivity under the PMGSY and the take-off points emanate from this highway.

1a. Cost of project: - Rs. 391.06 Crs

1b Justification for locating the project in forest area giving alternative those were examined and reasons for the rejection:

Since this is an upgradation project of existing highway to two lane/four lane with paved shoulders, so no alternative is required to be examined. Wherever possible, non-forest land has been used to its maximum to accommodate proposed upgradation. In view of above reason, alignment passes through 2.874 Kms of forest land in seven patches which cannot be located on non-forest land. Hence the proposed diversion of 5.153 ha in the final alignment is fully justified.

However, Bypasses or detours will be provided to segregate the local traffic from the through traffic. Re- alignments are to be done at many places having sub-standard curves and to avoid landslide zones in hilly terrain and plain terrain. Further the examination of the project alignment indicates to the possibility of realignment Near Sangvi Village, Palashi Village, Dorli Village & Taroda Village.
