Perseverance was a theme as the Grandville players accepted a team Perseverance Award in honor of their fallen captain, Ryan Fischer, who died the morning of their MHSAA Division 1 semifinal game. The team decided to still play the game under very difficult circumstances. The audience of 600 honored Fischer, too, with a minute of silence during the presentation. For the sixth year, the banquet was spon - sored by Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg, who first approached Hockey Weekly with his desire to support educa - tional athletics through the event. It was an afternoon full of laughs, jokes and even tears as presenters and award recip - ients told their stories of how hockey has helped them to persevere through obsta - cles.
