Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

  • Reproduction in Lee Friedlander's Early Photobooks
Emily H. Cohen Arbus, Friedlander, Winogrand Spring 2014 Professor Slifkin “Beautiful to Open and Pleasurable to Leaf Through:”1 The Art and Craft of Reproduction in Lee Friedlander’s Early Photobooks In the 1970s, a photomechanical reproduction revolution was underway as printers, such as Richard Benson of the Meridan Gravure Company in Connecticut, were experimenting with methods to translate the tonal complexities of silver gelatin photographs into ink on paper. In doing so, they would further the role of photobooks as an important component of modern photography. Photographer Lee Friedlander had been shooting film since the 1950s, but it was not until the ‘70s that he became interested in putting his work into book format. For his first solo book project, Self Portrait, he was teamed up with Benson, and as a collaborative team they helped revolutionize offset lithographic printing for the world of photography. Friedlander has prolifically produced photobooks ever since, and his output raises questions about the nature of reproduction, the role of craft in the art of photographs in ink, and how the book format necessarily changes the viewing experience for photography. When photographs are brought together as a collection, they resonate with each other, providing additional information and meaning for each individual image; the whole is greater 1 Parr, 4. “The combination of remarkable images and good design in a book that is beautiful to open and pleasurable to leaf through is an ideal way of conveying a photographer’s ideas and statements.” Cohen, "2 than the sum of its parts. This notion, according to Peter Galassi in his essay for Friedlander’s 2004 monograph publication, is fundamental to modern photography: “Considered one by one, some of the pictures are inevitably better than others, but the sense of the whole depends upon the profusion of its parts.”2 To further the connection, photographs can be literally bound together as pages of a photobook; the physical connection makes the collective meaning paramount.

He was succeeded the following day by Dr. James B. Bell. Dr. Heslin joined our staff in 1956 as Assistant Director and Librarian. On April 1, 1960, he succeeded Dr. R.W.G. Vail as Director. A perusal of annual reports over the past quarter-century makes eminently clear Dr. Heslin's many important contributions to the Society during a period marked, especially during the last decade, by national and international economic crises. • American Road Photography from 1930 to the Present A
THE PROFANE AND PROFOUND: AMERICAN ROAD PHOTOGRAPHY FROM 1930 TO THE PRESENT A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Han-Chih Wang Diploma Date August 2017 Examining Committee Members: Professor Gerald Silk, Department of Art History Professor Miles Orvell, Department of English Professor Erin Pauwels, Department of Art History Professor Byron Wolfe, Photography Program, Department of Graphic Arts and Design THE PROFANE AND PROFOUND: AMERICAN ROAD PHOTOGRAPHY FROM 1930 TO THE PRESENT ABSTRACT Han-Chih Wang This dissertation historicizes the enduring marriage between photography and the American road trip. In considering and proposing the road as a photographic genre with its tradition and transformation, I investigate the ways in which road photography makes artistic statements about the road as a visual form, while providing a range of commentary about American culture over time, such as frontiersmanship and wanderlust, issues and themes of the automobile, highway, and roadside culture, concepts of human intervention in the environment, and reflections of the ordinary and sublime, among others. Based on chronological order, this dissertation focuses on the photographic books or series that depict and engage the American road. The first two chapters focus on road photographs in the 1930s and 1950s, Walker Evans’s American Photographs, 1938; Dorothea Lange’s An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion, 1939; and Robert Frank’s The Americans, 1958/1959. Evans dedicated himself to depicting automobile landscapes and the roadside. Lange concentrated on documenting migrants on the highway traveling westward to California.

  • The D.A.P. Catalog Spring 2019 Eu
EU THE D.A.P. CATALOG SPRING 2019 A classic grand tour Walks to the Paradise Garden: A Lowdown Southern Odyssey Edited by Phillip March Jones. Text by Jonathan Williams. Photographs by Roger Manley, Guy Mendes. of Southern folk art, Walks to the Paradise Garden is the last unpublished manuscript of the late American poet, photographer, from Howard Finster publisher, Black Mountain alumnus and bon viveur Jonathan Williams (1929–2008). This 352-page book chronicles Williams’ road trips across the Southern United States with photographers Guy Mendes and Roger Manley in to Lonnie Holley search of the most authentic and outlandish artists the South had to offer. Williams describes the project thus: “The people and places in Walks to the Paradise Garden exist along the blue highways of America.… We have traveled many thousands of miles, together and separately, to document what tickled us, what moved us, and what (sometimes) appalled us.” The majority of these road trips took place in the 1980s, a pivotal decade in the development of Southern “yard shows,” and many of the artists are now featured in major institutions. This book, however, chronicles them at the outset of their careers and provides essential context for their inclusion in the art historical canon. Taking its name from the famous artwork by Howard Finster, Walks to the Paradise Garden brings to light rare images and stories of Southern artists and creators who existed in near anonymity during the last half of the 20th century. Organized in chapters devoted to each artist, the book features Banner Blevins, Henry Dorsey, Sam Doyle, Howard Finster, Lonnie Holley, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Sister Gertrude Morgan, William C.

  • THE D.A.P. CATALOG Spring 2019 Mid-EAST
MID-EAST THE D.A.P. CATALOG SPRING 2019 artbook.com I William Klein: Celebration Text by William Klein. Here, looking back from the perspective of his 90 years, William Klein selects his favorite works, those that he considers to be the very best he has made over the course of his long career, in order to pay homage to the medium of photography itself. This book, appropriately titled Celebration, provides a tour of his most emblematic works, traversing New York, Rome, Moscow, Madrid, Barcelona and Paris, in powerful black and white or striking color. The book also includes a text by the author in which he reflects upon the photographic art and explains what prompted him to make this director’s cut, this exceptionally personal selection. A small-format but high-voltage volume, in page after page Celebration makes it clear why Klein’s achievement is one of the summits of contemporary photography. Born in New York in 1928, William Klein studied painting and worked briefly as Fernand Léger’s assistant in Paris, but never received formal training in photography. His fashion work has been featured prominently in Vogue magazine, and has also been the subject of several iconic photo books, including Life Is Good and Good for You in New York (1957) and Tok yo (1964). In the 1980s, he turned to film projects and has produced many memorable documentary and feature films, such as Muhammed Ali, the Greatest (1969). Klein currently lives and works in Paris, France. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
