Studies of Victorian reading practices have explored which texts Victorian readers chose to read and how they interpreted them, but scholars have generally neglected the actual processes through which readers became informed about and made their reading selections, as well as the Victorians’ discursive treatment of those processes. Addressing this lapse, I argue that from the Victorians’ perspective, the ways readers selected books had a profound effect on their reading experiences, shaping how they understood texts’ meanings, developed relationships with books, and characterized themselves as readers. To investigate this overlooked aspect of reading in the nineteenth century, I draw on a variety of sources from the Victorian period, including metadata, literary representations of readers, and nonfiction prose that addresses book selection, by figures such as John Stuart Mill, Henry Morley, Mark Pattison, and John Ruskin. These sources provide a rich sense of the varied ways in which Victorian readers came across books and made book selections, including searching through catalogues, following others’ recommendations, and browsing book stall shelves or stacks of books at home. I outline two divergent attitudes circulating in Victorian publications about book selection, one advocating readers’ purposeful pursuits of information about books, arranged by educated individuals, and the other celebrating the many ways readers could approach literature from outside of the formal infrastructure of information. The nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century texts that feature most prominently in my analysis of Victorian book selection habits include the catalogues of Mudie’s library from the 1850s vi through the 1930s, as well as a number of novels and poems: Arnold Bennett’s Riceyman Steps (1923), Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Aurora Leigh (1856), Robert Browning’s The Ring and the Book (1868- 69), George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss (1860), Charles Kingsley’s Alton Locke (1850), Ouida’s The Tower of Taddeo (1892), and Mark Rutherford’s Clara Hopgood (1896). I conclude the dissertation by bringing into the present the Victorians’ concerns about informed reading, analyzing Rebecca Mead’s My Life in Middlemarch (2014) to study the relationship between expert guidance on texts and emotional identification with texts. vii Introduction Readers depicted in Victorian literature come by their books in many ways. When Henry Ryecroft, the protagonist of George Gissing’s semi-autobiographical The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft (1903), finds a first edition of Edward Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire in a bookshop, he puts forth extraordinary effort to obtain it. Having already forgone food to save money for just such a book, Ryecroft makes three trips across London to make it his: one to retrieve his money, and then two more to lug the many-volume work home.1 Once finished with his epic journeys, Ryecroft flops into a chair, “perspiring, flaccid, aching—exultant!” The work remains a treasured volume for years but is eventually sold out of necessity; regretting the sale in later life while in more prosperous conditions, Ryecroft never purchases another copy of the Gibbon, because “it would not be to [him] what that other was, with its memory of dust and toil.” Where hard work forges a special connection between Ryecroft and his Gibbon, the heroine of Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South (1855), Margaret Hale, finds solace in a book passage that she comes upon effortlessly. “In her nervous agitation” from life’s compounding difficulties, the narrator relates, “she unconsciously opened a book of her father’s that lay upon the table [and] the words that caught her eye in it, seemed almost made for her present state.”2 Buoyed by both the perceived relevance of the book’s message and the serendipity of its discovery, Margaret takes it to heart and finds courage to face her challenges. Another fictional Victorian, Tom Pinch of Charles Dickens’s Martin Chuzzlewit (1843-44), is beguiled by books through neither herculean effort nor chance, but by the clever design of a bookseller’s window display. Attracted by the sight of “spick-and span new works 1 Gissing, The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft, 39-41. 2 Gaskell, North and South, vol. 2, 218-19. 1 from London, with the title-pages, and sometimes even the first page of the first chapter, laid wide open,” Tom notes that “unwary men” might begin to read the book, “and then, in the impossibility of turning over, . rush blindly in, and buy it!”3 “What a heartbreaking shop it was!” Tom concludes, his longing for books made acute by the contrast between his detailed, lingering observations of the books in the shop window and his inability to purchase them.

    Guide to the Bookplate Collections at the Grolier Club Library Grolier Club Bookplate Collection, ca. 1896-present (11 boxes) The Grolier Club Bookplate Collection is an “artificial collection” compiled by Club librarians from ca. 1896 to the present day. Most of the bookplates were (and are) acquired through donations from Grolier Club members, bookplate designers, and bookplate collectors. Club librarian Ruth S. Granniss actively solicited donations during her tenure (1905-1944). After her retirement, George L. McKay continued to build the collection on a more limited scale. After 1956, there was no significant activity until Charles Antin solicited donations for an exhibition of members’ bookplates in November 1976 by the Committee on Modern Fine Printing. The Grolier Club Librarian continues to add individual and small groups of bookplates to the collection as they are received from members and others. Larger collections of bookplates, when compiled by a single individual or corporate body, are cataloged by the present librarian (and some of her predecessors) in the spirit of “respect des fonds.” Scope and Contents The collection consists of over 4,200 bookplates, dating from ca. 1700 to the present. It also includes correspondence from 1895-1977, as well as approximately 700 signed proofs donated by notable engravers of the 20th century, including Edwin Davis French and Sidney Lawton Smith. Organization and Arrangement Bookplates are arranged by designer where possible, by owner, or by type. There are two series of correspondence, one representing the collecting efforts of Grolier Club librarians, the other relating to the 1976 exhibition by Charles Antin and the Grolier Club Committee on Modern Fine Printing.

    Books beyond bars The transformative potential of prison libraries The human right to education is particularly important in the prison environment, as prisoners often come from disadvantaged socio-economic and educational backgrounds. This publication explores the extent to which prison authorities fulfil their societal mandate to rehabilitate and reintegrate inmates by enabling them to use prison libraries to pursue their right to education, access relevant information or simply enjoy reading a good book. Reading and using a prison library can open up a world beyond prison bars, allowing prisoners to forget for a time the harsh reality of prison life and empowering them to choose their own reading materials in an otherwise extremely restrictive and regulated environment. To disappear from the world I would read a book, and to deal with stress I would play my piano. Entering Eastern Michigan University from high school I was very interested in looking into the Music Therapy Program. I had worked with students with special needs at my past elementary school and had recently welcomed a baby cousin into my family who was born with severe Cerebral Palsy. I had experienced firsthand the healing power of music with adults and children, and I wanted explore this major. After auditioning, I discovered pure Music Therapy was not my true dream because teaching was my passion. I decided to use music therapy in the classroom and my path was set for elementary education. However at the end of my third year, while choosing a topic for my thesis, my advisor mentioned Bibliotherapy and without even knowing fully what it involved, something in my soul screamed “Yes” and that became my Senior Honour Thesis Topic.

    Jan 21 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) did not gather in New York to celebrate the Great Detective’s 167th birthday this year, but the somewhat shorter long weekend offered plenty of events, thanks to Zoom and other modern technol- ogy. Detailed reports will be available soon at the web-site of The Baker Street Irregulars <www.bakerstreetirregulars.com>, but here are few brief paragraphs to tide you over: The BSI’s Distinguished Speaker on Thursday was Andrew Lycett, the author of two fine books about Conan Doyle; his topic was “Conan Doyle’s Questing World” (and close to 400 people were able to attend the virtual lecture); the event also included the announcement by Steve Rothman, editor of the Baker Street Journal, of the winner of the Morley-Montgomery Award for the best article the BSJ last year: Jessica Schilling (for her “Just His Type: An Analysis of the Découpé Warning in The Hound of the Baskervilles”). Irregulars and guests gathered on Friday for the BSI’s annual dinner, with Andrew Joffe offering the traditional first toast to Nina Singleton as The Woman, and the program continued with the usual toasts, rituals, and pap- ers; this year the toast to Mrs. Hudson was delivered by the lady herself, splendidly impersonated by Denny Dobry from his recreation of the sitting- room at 221B Baker Street. Mike Kean (the “Wiggins” of the BSI) presented the Birthday Honours (Irregular Shillings and Investitures) to Dan Andri- acco (St. Saviour’s Near King’s Cross), Deborah Clark (Mrs. Cecil Forres- ter), Carla Coupe (London Bridge), Ann Margaret Lewis (The Polyphonic Mo- tets of Lassus), Steve Mason (The Fortescue Scholarship), Ashley Polasek (Singlestick), Svend Ranild (A “Copenhagen” Label), Ray Riethmeier (Mor- rison, Morrison, and Dodd), Alan Rettig (The Red Lamp), and Tracy Revels (A Black Sequin-Covered Dinner-Dress).

I cannot believe it. My red-pigtailed childhood alter-ego who lived in that crazy house with her horse and monkey unfettered by supervision failed to make the final cut. Exhibition curator Chris Loker shared the clash of “Mary versus Pippi” to illustrate the difficult deci- sionmaking required to arrive at the Grolier Club’s “One Hundred Books Famous in Children’s Literature,” on view through February 7 at the head- quarters of America’s oldest bibliophile society, founded in 1884. The formulation of the joint catalog and exhibition was not an exercise in nos- talgia, even as Loker recognizes, and even honors, the powerful emotional pull children’s books can exert upon memory. Her intent was to produce a scholarly tool for serious book collectors while also crafting a catalog and exhibition that would delight the general reading public as well as hard-core bibliophiles. According to Loker, “Through this project we have tried to find as many ways as possible to embrace children’s literature.” More than a century before the British Museum and BBC created the often-emulated History of the World in One Hundred Objects radio and online program, New York’s Grolier Club had launched its own “One Hundred” series. The club’s first such exhibition and catalog, One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature, dates to 1902–03.
