The ELCA resource titled “Principles for Worship” states “in the worship space, beauty is a portal to the mystery of God and a witness to Christian faith and truth. Beauty is revealed through the honest use of the materials of God’s creation.”

Flowers - Since flowers and plants are part of the beauty of creation, they are used almost universally to adorn the worship space. Fresh flowers are used for their symbolism of life, creation, and human frailty. Their color and arrangement should be consistent with the season or festival being observed. Flowers are not typically used during Lent. Flowers may be placed in various locations in the worship space. They are not, however, placed on the altar itself, which is reserved for the communion vessels and leaders book. Flowers and other decorations adorn, but should not obscure the central things – altar table, baptismal font, and pulpit. Lighted candles are among the oldest ornaments of worship. Candles are a visual reminder of Christ as the light of the world (John 8:12 and 12:46).

Altar candles – At least two white candles are placed on the altar-table or in floor stands next to it.

Processional Torches are large candles placed in wooden or metal shafts that may be carried behind or alongside the processional cross. They are placed in floor stands in the chancel on either side of the altar-table, or sometimes the pulpit. Processional torches symbolize the coming of Christ to lighten the darkness of the world.

Paschal candle – The Paschal candle is a large decorated candle that symbolizes Christ’s Easter triumph over sin and death. This candle is decorated with a cross, and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega (meaning beginning and ending). Paschal candles have been used in worship since at least the fifth century. The paschal candle is the largest candle in the worship space. The Paschal candle is lighted for all worship services during the seven weeks of the Easter season. After Pentecost the candle is lighted for baptisms and funerals. It is a visual connection between baptism and Easter, reminding us that we are buried and raised with Christ (Roman 6: 3-5). Baptismal candles are lighted from the Paschal candle for presentation to the newly baptized.

Sanctuary Lamp – The Sanctuary Lamp is suspended from the ceiling or mounted on the chancel wall, and holds a candle that burns continuously throughout the year. It symbolizes God’s living presence among us.

The Cross is the symbol of Christ’s Passion, resurrection and victory over death. The Crucifix is a cross bearing the figure of Christ. The Crucifix symbolizes the death of Christ as a complete sacrifice for our salvation. In the time immediately before the Reformation a large crucifix was placed upon or above the altar. Many reformers abolished the cross and crucifix, but the Lutheran reformers continued the practice of displaying crosses or crucifixes in church buildings.

The Processional Cross has been used since the fourth century. A Processional Cross is carried to the chancel and placed in a floor or wall bracket. “Fixed” Altar Crosses date from the seventeenth century. Sometimes the Altar Cross has the symbols of the four Evangelists on the arms, and the Lamb, symbol of Christ, at the crossing. The symbols are mentioned in Revelation (4: 6-9), although the creatures are not specifically linked to the evangelists. Normally, but not always, the symbols appear with wings like angels. The four Evangelists are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Matthew is symbolized by a winged man, or angel. Matthew’s gospel starts with Jesus’ genealogy from Abraham. It represents Christ’s human nature. Mark is symbolized by a winged lion, a figure of courage and royalty. It represents Christ as king. Luke is symbolized by a winged ox or bull, a figure of sacrifice, service, and strength. It represents Jesus’ sacrifice in his Crucifixion. John is symbolized by an eagle, a figure of the sky. It represents Jesus’ ascension and divine nature.

Fox Country Players will again be offering a Theatre Arts Academy this summer. First through eighth graders will attend classes from July 6 through July 17. The theme for this year is “Under the Sea.” The students will learn acting, singing, dancing and the art of stagecraft, with performances showcasing their work on July 17 at 7:00 PM and July 18 at 2:00 PM and 7:00 p.m. The high school students will meet from July 6 through July 24 and will prepare the musical “The Little Mermaid” which will be performed July 24 at 7:00 PM and July 25 at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. All classes and per- formances will be held at the Yorkville Congregational Church. For more info and registration forms, go to www.foxcountryplayers.org or call 630-234-5459. T HE ANCHOR P AGE 5

From the Youth & Family Ministry Director: Here we find ourselves in summer. For me personally, I feel this school year has moved quickly. I hope all students have finished their academic year strong. I have enjoyed spending time with our youth in Sun- day School and events we have engaged in throughout the year. I look for to sharing more time with your families during the summer. Congratulations to High School Graduates: McKenna Albertson, Lucas Maaske, Alan Pease and Mikayla Schmidt! Recognition also to the following higher education graduates: Will Brown graduated from Benedictine with a BBA, Marshal Savitski graduated from the Wisconsin State Police Academy, Austi Savitski will be graduating from AU with a MA in Curriculum & Instruction, Rachel Smith graduated from Aurora University with a Criminal Justice degree & Clare Smith graduated from WCC and will be attending UIC. We are so proud of all of you and may God Bless you in your future endeavors . I love the ideas that have been coming in from our youth and families for ways of sharing fellowship, serving our communities and sharing God’s love. Please keep sharing your ideas with me. Starting this upcoming fall, I would like to be able to have the youth assist with sending notes and care packages to members who are either bravely serving our Country in the Armed Forces or currently in College. Please help us let them know we are thinking about them by emailing me at [email protected] with the mailing information for your family member who is attending college or serving in our Armed Forces. I will be updating in August with more information as to when we will plan to have youth work on packing packages and writing letters and a need for donations. Upcoming Events: - Wednesday, June 17 6-7:30pm We will be serving at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora. There has been quite a bit of interest in this opportunity, and I am really excited about this opportunity for us to serve together. I have reserved 30 spots, but we can modify our numbers. Here is some background about FMSC: Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a Christian non-profit organization committed to feeding God's children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: volunteers hand-pack meals specially formulated for malnourished children, and we send them to partners around the world where they're used to operate orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs to break the cycle of poverty. FMSC food has reached more than 70 countries in our history. More information can be found at www.fmsc.org. Here are a few things you should know. First, PLEASE SIGN UP ON THE SIGN UP SHEET FOR THIS EVENT IN THE BACK OF THE SANCTUARY. We need to have an accurate count of who is coming up to 5 days before our event. You can also indicate if you will need transportation to this event. We will meet at First Lutheran for those who need transportation and travel from there. Second, there will be a need for some adult volunteers to also join us. Third, you must wear closed toe shoes and NO JEWELRY to this event. Fourth, they do ask for a monetary donation if possible. Our youth have a deco- rated box in the back of the Sanctuary for FMSC where we can collect donations from those who would like to donate to this cause. If you have any additional ideas about fundraising for this event, I’d love to hear them - July 6 - 10 VBS We are joining with First Baptist and United Methodist to host Vacation Bible School with a theme of Son Spark Labs. Your expertise is greatly needed. We are still in need of volunteers, instructors and high school youth to help make this a huge success. Please email me at [email protected] if you have questions. There is a sign up board in the back of the sanctuary. Thank you for considering to help. Registration forms have been distributed in Sunday School Classes and extra forms are available in the gathering area outside of Secretary’s Office. Please note that there is an early bird registration offer of a free T-shirt (excluding Preschool) for the tie-dye craft if registration is received by June 28! Pre-registration is helpful for planning. There will be a program for campers and their families hosted by First Lutheran on July 9 at 6:30pm. We hope to see many First Lutheran youth this summer! ~continued - next page …. T HE ANCHOR P AGE 15

The park includes the zoo, gorgeous gardens, a play area, and visitor center. This event is weather permitting. Should there be a storm that day, we will look for an alternate date. For more information about Phillips Park, please visit: http://www.phillipsparkaurora.com/zoo- information.html . Also please contact me via email at [email protected] or cell 630-750-0706 for questions regarding this event. Looking for inexpensive or free family events for the summer? I know for my family, we try to pack in as much summer fun as we can before school starts again. I’m always looking for ways to accomplish this while saving money. I put together a small list of local inexpen- sive or free events that you may want to visit this summer:

Finally, I want to share that I think of and pray for our First Lutheran families often. I’m praying for good health and a safe summer for all. We all carry our own stories, burdens, illnesses and worries. In these times where I feel stressed or worried the most, I try to remember that God never intended for us to do this all on our own! He is there for us reaching out his hand. How awesome a gift His grace is to each of us. This verse really speaks to me: 8 2 Corinthians 12: 8-9 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. God’s peace and grace be with you all this summer! ~Renee Mahoney Mailing date: May 29th Nonprofit Org.
