40 Augustana Magazine | Spring 2005 Folk singer goes high-tech Folk musician Amy Martin ’95 may be rooted in Missoula, Montana, but anyone from Milan to Maui can listen to her songs and download them from her Web site, www.amymartin.org. According to Martin, only a handful of independent musicians are currently making their catalogs available one song at a time, and although it was an expensive venture to set up, it’s necessary for long-term viability. That’s Amy Martin, the busi- nesswoman, talking…the same entrepreneur who last summer launched her own label, Raven’s Wing Records. “I’ll always be independent,” she says, “and having my own record label was a conscious commitment to doing it my way. I’m probably resigning myself to a smaller sphere of listeners, but I will have control, and I have a lot of music to get out.” The Iowa native says she’s sick of plastic pop songs and thinks a lot of other people are too. “We need songs that reflect the depth and complexity of our experiences,” Martin says. “We need music that speaks to our roots, not just our surfaces.” “To me, folk music is music that has an address and a hometown; it comes from somewhere, and it knows it. It speaks to its own time, knows its history, has hopes for the future. It has dirt under its fingernails and lines around its eyes. It hasn’t had the crankiness washed out of it.” Martin’s latest album, Deliverance, is her fifth in five years.

Before iPods…Who needs a stereo, when you’ve got a piano and a euphonium in your room? This shot was taken in the (old) Old Main, which housed students as well as classrooms between 1875 and 1935. The picture was given to Augustana by the late Elmere Petersen ’17, at left. It’s now part of an online repository of historic images being compiled by Augustana, Davenport’s Putnam Museum, the Rock Island Historical Society, and three area public libraries. Visit www.umvphotoarchive.org to view the collection and learn more about the program, which is supported by grants from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust and the State Library of Illinois.
