Ecoregions of Nevada Ecoregion 5 Is a Mountainous, Deeply Dissected, and Westerly Tilting Fault Block
5 . S i e r r a N e v a d a Ecoregions of Nevada Ecoregion 5 is a mountainous, deeply dissected, and westerly tilting fault block. It is largely composed of granitic rocks that are lithologically distinct from the sedimentary rocks of the Klamath Mountains (78) and the volcanic rocks of the Cascades (4). A Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, Vegas, Reno, and Carson City areas. We also understand that BLM is currently evaluating the Silurian Valley Wind Project under the National Environmental Policy Act. As the enclosed comments make clear, NPCA has serious concerns about the proposed projects’ compliance with applicable laws and policies, and about their potentially significant adverse effects on the Silurian Valley and surrounding region. Zeh, Ph.D., Dean Graduate School May, 2020 i ABSTRACT Habitat disturbance impedes connectivity for native populations by altering natural movement patterns, significantly increasing the risk of population decline. The Mojave Desert historically exhibited high ecological connectivity, but human presence has increased recently, as has habitat disturbance. Human land use primarily occurs in Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) habitat posing risks to the federally threatened species, which has declined as a result. As threats intensify, so does the need to protect tortoise habitat and connectivity. Functional corridors require appropriate habitat amounts and population densities, as individuals may need time to achieve connectivity and find mates. Developments in tortoise habitat have not been well studied, and understanding the relationship between barriers, corridors, population density, and gene flow is an important step towards species recovery. -

Shane McMurphy/iStockphoto Mojave National Preserve California Overview Two hours from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas and 100 miles from the nearest lodging lies California’s Mojave National Preserve. The Las Vegas Review-Journal dubbed this vast desert in San Bernardino County the “perfect escape for those seeking serenity.” The preserve spans 1.6 million acres, making it the third-largest National Park Service (NPS) unit in the contiguous United States. Mojave is ecologically and geologically diverse, with towering sand dunes, dun-colored mesas, and volcanic formations providing habitat for its abundant plants and wildlife. In addition to the densest forest of Joshua trees in the world, visitors can see bighorn sheep, bobcats, golden eagles, and breathtaking displays of seasonal wildflowers. The preserve also has a rich cultural heritage. Lands first inhabited by the Chemehuevi and Mojave tribes attracted gold miners in the late 19th century and were later crossed by several railroad lines. Visitors can learn more about this history through exhibits at the visitor center and by exploring archaeological sites, abandoned mines, and preserved homesteads and other buildings. The ghost town of Kelso, which once served as a Union Pacific Railroad depot and mining outpost, is one of the park’s most popular destinations. Unfortunately, Mojave faces over $131 million in deferred maintenance. Maintenance challenges Nearly all of Mojave’s needed repairs are for its road network. Severe deterioration of some sections of pavement has prompted the NPS to warn visitors of dangerous potholes. -

GROUND-MAGNETIC STUDIES OF THE AMARGOSA DESERT REGION, CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA Richard J. Blakely, John W. Hillhouse, and Robert L. Morin ABSTRACT High-resolution aeromagnetic surveys of the Amargosa Desert region, California and Nevada, exhibit a diverse array of magnetic anomalies reflecting a wide range of mid- and upper-crustal lithologies. In most cases, these anomalies can be interpreted in terms of exposed rocks and sedimentary deposits. More difficult to explain are linear magnetic anomalies situated over lithologies that typically have very low magnetizations. Aeromagnetic anomalies are observed, for example, over thick sections of Quaternary alluvial deposits and spring deposits associated with past or modern ground-water discharge in Ash Meadows, Pahrump Valley, and Furnace Creek Wash. Such deposits are typically considered nonmagnetic. To help determine the source of these aeromagnetic anomalies, we conducted ground-magnetic studies at five areas: near Death Valley Junction, at Point of Rocks Spring, at Devils Hole, at Fairbanks Spring, and near Travertine Springs. Depth-to-source calculations show that the sources of these anomalies lie within the Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary section. -

Laudenslayer, Jr. i INTRODUCTION i \ 1 The term, "California desert", as used herein, refers to a politically defined region, most of i which is included in the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) designated by the Federal Land ; and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA). Of the 25 million acres in the CDCA, about one-half are i public lands, most of which are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) according to the "980 P California Desert Conservation Area Plan mandated by FLPMA. The California desert encompasses those portions of the Great Basin Desert (east of the White and lnyo Mountains and A south of the California-Nevada border), the Mojave Desert, and the Colorado Desert which occur " within California; it does not include areas of riparian, aquatic, urban, and agricultural habitats . adjacent to the Colorado River. (Also see chapters on Geology by Norris and Bioclimatology by E3irdsI4 are the most conspicuous vertebrates found in the California deserts. Records exist for at least 425 species (Garrett and Dunn 1981) from 18 orders and 55 families. These counts far exceed those for mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and they are similar to totals for the entire state -- 542 species from 20 orders and 65 families (Laudenslayer and Grenfell 1983). These figures may seem surprisingly similar considering the harsh, arid climates often believed characteristic of I desert environments. However, habiiats found in the California desert range from open water and h marshes at the Salton Sea to pinyon-juniper woodland and limber pinelbristlecone pine forests on a few mountain ranges. -
