WHAT IS A FARM? AGRICULTURE, DISCOURSE, AND PRODUCING LANDSCAPES IN ST ELIZABETH, JAMAICA By Gary R. Schnakenberg A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Geography – Doctor of Philosophy 2013 ABSTRACT WHAT IS A FARM? AGRICULTURE, DISCOURSE, AND PRODUCING LANDSCAPES IN ST. ELIZABETH, JAMAICA By Gary R. Schnakenberg This dissertation research examined the operation of discourses associated with contemporary globalization in producing the agricultural landscape of an area of rural Jamaica. Subject to European colonial domination from the time of Columbus until the 1960s and then as a small island state in an unevenly globalizing world, Jamaica has long been subject to operations of unequal power relationships. Its history as a sugar colony based upon chattel slavery shaped aspects of the society that emerged, and left imprints on the ethnic makeup of the population, orientation of its economy, and beliefs, values, and attitudes of Jamaican people. Many of these are smallholder agriculturalists, a livelihood strategy common in former colonial places. Often ideas, notions, and practices about how farms and farming ‘ought-to-be’ in such places results from the operations and workings of discourse. As advanced by Foucault, ‘discourse’ refers to meanings and knowledge circulated among people and results in practices that in turn produce and re-produce those meanings and knowledge. Discourses define what is right, correct, can be known, and produce ‘the world as it is.’ They also have material effects, in that what it means ‘to farm’ results in a landscape that emerges from those meanings. In Jamaica, meanings of ‘farms’ and ‘farming’ have been shaped by discursive elements of contemporary globalization such as modernity, competition, and individualism. -

Durden 2 and Hugh Rose 3 ABSTRACT Three fossil butterflies recently collected from the Green River Shale of Colorado extend the known range of Rhopalocera eight to ten million years back, to 48 Ma. Praepapilio Colorado n. g., n. sp., and P. gracilis n. sp. are primitive Papilionidae related to the modern Baronia brevicornis Salvin, but they require a new subfamily, Praepapilioninae. Riodinella nympha n. g., n. sp. is a primitive member of the Lycaenidae, related to modern Ancyluris, Riodina, and Rhetus, in the tribe Riodinidi. INTRODUCTION With approximately 194,000 living species, the Lepidoptera is, after the Coleoptera with some 350,000, species, the second most diverse order of organisms. It is underrepresented in the fossil record (Scudder 1875, 1891, 1892; Handlirsch 1925;Mackay 1970;Kuhne 1973; Shields 1976). -

The sample was collected during the Characterization of wild Entomofauna of the Frio river basin jurisdiction of CDMB, in secondary forests in an altitudinal gradient from 1,000 to 2,911 masl. 79 specimens of the family Pieridae were collected, belonging to 13 genera of which Leptophobia had 5 species, and Catasticta and Eurema had 3 species each. We obtained 22 species distributed in six sampling locations, where the highest richness of species was in Diviso Experimental Center with 12 species and Esperanza Experimental Center with 10. The analysis of the inventory quality showed a potential richness of 32.81 species, a proportion of the observed species of 67.05% and a sampling effort of 76.41%. The comparison of inventories for each locality showed a certain similarity between La Nevera, La Mariana and La Judia, and fewer similarities with El Diviso. -

Montego Bay Community College branded as the “University College of Western Jamaica” is the only community college in Western Jamaica. Driven by its Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division the college continues to contribute to the development of the workforce of western Jamaica and its environs thereby enhancing the human capital productive capacity. This vision is driven by the growing demands of the global market and is in keeping with the principles of a knowledge based economy. Montego Bay Community College through its Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division in collaboration with the St. James Parish Council will be hosting the inaugural Western Jamaica Economic Forum, on Wednesday November 26, 2014, at the Montego Bay Convention Centre. Introduction The present work represents the conclusion of a study which has involved observations on the effects of feeding larvae certain chemicals (Kolyer, 1966) and on the effects of environmental factors (Kolyer, 1969) on the wing markings of the European cabbage butterfly Pieris rapae ( Linnaeus ) . Specific objects were to note variations in markings as a result of (1) reduced-temperature storage of pupae of various ages, as an extension of previous work (Kolyer, 1969), (2) brief, barely sublethal heating of pupae, and (3) exposure of pupae to short-wave ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Incidental observations, e.g. on larval disease and the yellow form of P. rapae, also are included. Experimental Procedures Rearing. Final instal' larvae were reared on an artificial diet at 79 ± 2°F and 45 ± 5% relative humidity under continuous cool white fluores cent light. Larval development was completed on cabbage leaves from refrigerated heads (see Kolyer, 1966); rearing room conditions were: 70- 81°F, approx. 20-33% reI. hum., diffuse sunlight (March 6-April 17, 1969, Convent, New Jersey) . Refrigeration of pupae. As in previous work (Kolyer, 1969), pupae were packed carefully along with facial tissues in fiber mailing cans, which were covered with polyethylene bags to exclude moisture and stored in a refrigerator at 32-36°F for 154-156 days (approx. 5 months). Heat treatment of pupae. Two test tubes, one inside the other, were immersed in hot water in a Dewar (vacuum-jacketed) vessel and allowed to equilibrate so that the temperature of the air within the inner tube ap proximated the temperature of the bath. -

Popovi c Abstract Anthocharis damone Boisduval, 1836 is known from southern Italy, Greece, Republic of Macedonia, Albania and further in the Middle East. At the end of May and beginning of June 2015 it was recorded for the first time in Serbia. A single isolated colony was found 170 km NW from the northernmost known locality in Europe. This record made us review A. damone distribution in Europe, suggested its possibly wider range over the Balkans and increased the list of butterflies recorded in Serbia to a total of 200 species. A population of E. elathea was studied for 13 months, from \Aay 1996 to May 1997 in a disturbed environment in suburban Campinas, southeastern Brazil. The population showed fluctuations in numbers throughout the study period, with well-marked peaks of abun dance in June-July, November- December and February. Sex ratio was male biased in four months and the time of residence was higher in the dry season. Both sexes were polypheni c; p aler phenotypes occurred in the dry season and darker phenotypes in the wet season, Paler pheno types were more frequently recaptured and had higher residence values than darker ones.
