Visit www.penplusbytes.org Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Over the past several years, social media has exhibited an exponential penetration into the daily lives of individuals, operations of businesses, and the interaction between governments and their respective people. It would not be far from the truth to assert that social media has become an important requirement for our daily personal and business life. It is against this backdrop that Penplusbytes, a leader in enhancing the work of journalists and promoting effective governance using technology in Africa, is introducing the maiden Social Media Index (SMI) report on Ghana's print, and electronic media - Radio and Television. The SMI report takes a look at the performance of established newspapers, radio and TV stations in Ghana regarding their activity and following on social media as at February 8th, 2016. Essentially, this report measures how these media entities utilize their online platforms to reach out and engage their target audience by employing a quantitative research module. INTRODUCTION Ghana is undeniably experiencing an explosion of social media presence where Facebook for instance is 2nd most visited website—above local news sites according to the January 2016 Top websites ranking released by SimilarWeb.com. Ghana currently accounts for about 2,900,000 of all Facebook users as at January 2016. Consider this, if Facebook were a country, it would be the 3rd most populous country in the world. -

NATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS AUTHORITY LIST OF AUTHORISED VHF-FM RADIO STATIONS IN GHANA AS AT SECOND QUARTER, 2019 Page 1 of 73 OVERVIEW OF FM RADIO BROADCASTING STATIONS IN GHANA Section 2 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008, Act 775 mandates that the National Communications Authority “shall regulate the radio spectrum designated or allocated for use by broadcasting organisations and providers of broadcasting services”; “… determine technical and other standards and issue guidelines for the operation of broadcasting organisations …” “… may adopt policies to cater for rural communities and for this purpose may waive fees wholly or in part for the grant of a frequency authorisation”. The Broadcasting service is a communication service in which the transmissions are intended for direct reception by the general public. The sound broadcasting service involves the broadcasting of sound which may be accompanied by associated text/data. Sound broadcasting is currently deployed in Ghana using analogue transmission techniques: Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Frequency Modulation (FM). Over the last two decades, AM sound broadcasting has faded, leaving FM radio as the only form of sound broadcasting in Ghana. FM radio broadcasting stations are classified for the purpose of regulatory administration of the service towards the attainment of efficient use of frequency. The following is the classification of FM radio broadcasting stations in Ghana. (1) Classification by Purpose: a) Public – all stations owned and operated by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and/or any other station established by the Government of Ghana by a statutory enactment. b) Public Foreign – stations established by Foreign Governments through diplomatic arrangements to rebroadcast/relay content from foreign countries e.g. -

Introduction TMG is pleased to announce the acquisition by the Company of a 32.26% interest in Multimedia Group Limited (“Multimedia”) in Ghana through the subscription for ordinary and preference shares in the share capital of Multimedia, for ZAR144 million (“the Acquisition”). 2. Description of the business carried on by Multimedia Multimedia is a radio and television business and is the largest independent media company in Ghana. Multimedia was founded in 1995 and currently owns and manages six of Ghana’s leading radio stations, three on-line media sites, a multi-channel satellite television service and a marketing and events management business. Its television channels also offer access into the broader West African market, particularly Nigeria. In 2009, Multimedia launched its free-to-air television platform, MultiTV (“MultiTV”). The Ghanaian television market has seen massive growth over the past four years, and to date MultiTV has sold 1,2 million set top boxes. Most of the growth in MultiTV was funded with expensive debt which has strained the cash flows of Multimedia, hampering its ability to grow. TMG’s capital investment will be used to retire all of Multimedia’s debt, leaving the business in a powerful position to deliver further growth in television and sustainable profitability.
