Create a playlist of these patriotic tunes that are the ultimate ode to the U.S.A.! “Ragged Old Flag” by I walked through a county courthouse square On a park bench, an old man was sittin’ there. I said, “Your old court house is kinda run down, He said, “Naw, it’ll do for our little town”. I said, “Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit, And that’s a ragged old flag you got hangin’ on it”. He said, “Have a seat”, and I sat down, “Is this the first time you’ve been to our little town” “America the Beautiful” by Ray Charles I said, “I think it is” He said “I don’t like to brag, but we’re kinda proud of Oh beautiful, for heroes proved, That Ragged Old Flag In liberating strife, Who more than self, THEIR country loved, “You see, we got a little hole in that flag there, And mercy more than life, When Washington took it across the Delaware. and It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it, writing “Say Can You See” America, OH America, may God thy gold refine, It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson Till all success be nobleness tugging at its seams. And every gain devined. and It almost fell at the Alamo beside the Texas flag, And you know when I was in school, But she waved on though. She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville, We used to sing it something like this, listen here: And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill. There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg, Oh beautiful, for spacious skies, And the south wind blew hard on For amber waves of grain, That Ragged Old Flag For purple mountain majesties, “On Flanders Field in World War I, Above the fruited plain, She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun, She turned blood red in World War II But now wait a minute, I’m talking about She hung limp, and low, a time or two, America, sweet America, She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent You know, God done shed his grace on thee, by her Uncle Sam. She waved from our ships upon the briny foam He crowned thy good, yes he did, in a brotherhood, and now they’ve about quit wavin’ back here at home . in her own good land here She’s been abused, She’s been burned, dishonored, denied an’ refused, You know, I wish I had somebody to help me sing this And the government for which she stands (America, America, God shed his grace on thee) Has been scandalized throughout out the land. And she’s getting thread bare, and she’s wearin’ thin, America, I love you America, you see, But she’s in good shape, for the shape she’s in. My God he done shed his grace on thee, Cause she’s been through the fire before And you oughta love him for it, and i believe she can take a whole lot more. Cause he, he, he, he, crowned thy good, He told me he would, with brotherhood, “So we raise her up every morning And we bring her down slow every night, (From sea to shining sea). We don’t let her touch the ground, Oh Lord, oh Lord, I thank you Lord And we fold her up right. (Shining sea). Songs Celebrating the U.S.A. “American Pie” by Don McLean Chorus A long, long time ago Helter skelter in a summer swelter I can still remember how that music used to make me The birds flew off with a fallout shelter “American Girl” smile Eight miles high and falling fast And I knew if I had my chance It landed foul on the grass by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers That I could make those people dance The players tried for a forward pass And maybe they’d be happy for a while With the jester on the sidelines in a cast Well she was an American girl It was kind of cold that night Raised on promises She stood alone on her balcony But February made me shiver Now the halftime air was sweet perfume She couldn’t help thinkin’ that there She could the cars roll by With every paper I’d deliver While the sergeants played a marching tune Was a little more to life Out on 441 Bad news on the doorstep We all got up to dance Somewhere else Like waves crashin’ in the beach I couldn’t take one more step Oh, but we never got the chance After all it was a great big world And for one desperate moment there With lots of places to run to He crept back in her memory I can’t remember if I cried ‘Cause the players tried to take the field God it’s so painful The marching band refused to yield Yeah, and if she had to die When I read about his widowed bride Tryin’ she had one little promise Something that’s so close But something touched me deep inside Do you recall what was revealed And still so far out of reach The day the music died The day the music died? She was gonna keep Chorus: Chorus Oh yeah, all right Oh yeah, all right So bye, bye, Miss American Pie Take it easy baby Take it easy baby Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry Oh, and there we were all in one place Make it last all night Make it last all night And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey ‘n rye A generation lost in space She was an American girl She was an American girl Singin’ this’ll be the day that I die With no time left to start again This’ll be the day that I die So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick Jack Flash sat on a candlestick Did you write the book of love ‘Cause fire is the devil’s only friend And do you have faith in God above If the Bible tells you so? Oh, and as I watched him on the stage Now do you believe in rock and roll? My hands were clenched in fists of rage Can music save your mortal soul? No angel born in Hell “America (My Country, ‘Tis of Thee)” by BeBe Winans And can you teach me how to dance real slow? Could break that Satan’s spell My country, ‘ tis of thee, Well, I know that you’re in love with him And as the flames climbed high into the night ‘Cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym To light the sacrificial rite Sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing; You both kicked off your shoes I saw Satan laughing with delight Land where my fathers died, Man, I dig those rhythm and blues The day the music died Land of the pilgrims’ pride, From every mountainside let freedom ring! I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck Chorus With a pink carnation and a pickup truck My native country, thee, But I knew I was out of luck Outro: Land of the noble free, thy name I love; The day the music died I met a girl who sang the blues I love thy rocks and rills, And I asked her for some happy news Thy woods and templed hills; Chorus But she just smiled and turned away I went down to the sacred store My heart with rapture thrills, like that above. Now for ten years we’ve been on our own Where I’d heard the music years before And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone But the man there said the music wouldn’t play Let music swell the breeze, But that’s not how it used to be And ring from all the trees sweet freedom’s song; When the jester sang for the king and queen And in the streets, the children screamed Let mortal tongues awake; In a coat he borrowed from James Dean The lovers cried and the poets dreamed Let all that breathe partake; And a voice that came from you and me But not a word was spoken Let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong. The church bells all were broken Oh, and while the king was looking down Our fathers’ God, to thee, The jester stole his thorny crown And the three men I admire most Author of liberty, to thee we sing; The courtroom was adjourned The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost Long may our land be bright No verdict was returned They caught the last train for the coast The day the music died With freedom’s holy light; Protect us by thy might, great God, our King. And while Lenin read a book on Marx The quartet practiced in the park Chorus And we sang dirges in the dark The day the music died Chorus Repeated
