Her book, Where Angels Fear to Tread, written in and self- published in from her home in the rectory of St. John’s Episcopalian Church in Jamaica Plain, Boston, raised considerable controversy when it first appeared. Mrs. Campbell’s fascinating entan- glement with the law spanned fourteen years. It began in , when she first came across an unsigned copy of her mother’s will while sort- ing through musty family trunks. The saga peaked in , when Mrs. Campbell appeared on her own behalf to argue her case in front of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. The legal battle finally ended in , when the Ontario Court of Appeal issued its last decision on the matter of costs relating to the complex web of litiga- tion spawned by Mrs. Campbell’s inheritance. The story that Mrs. Campbell tells is extraordinary, and not only because she appears to have been the first woman to argue in front of the Law Lords at the Privy Council. Mrs. Campbell’s description of the barriers she surmounted before emerging victorious in England unveils the intricate, multilayered world of overlapping intrigue and influence that constituted the early-twentieth-century Ontario legal system. From her unique vantage point as both an insider and an out- sider, she comments on the actions of lawyers and judges with acuity and perspicacity. Others might have thought as she did.

Benedict, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation is the first study to examine the Irish and Chinese interethnic and interracial dynamic in the United States and the British Empire in Australia and Canada during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Utilizing comparative and transnational perspectives and drawing on multinational and multilingual archival research including Chinese language sources, “The Global Irish and Chinese” argues that Irish immigrants were at the forefront of anti-Chinese movements in Australia, Canada, and the United States during the second half of the nineteenth century. Their rhetoric and actions gave rise to Chinese immigration restriction legislation and caused major friction in the Qing Empire’s foreign relations with the United States and the British Empire. Moreover, Irish immigrants east and west of the Rocky Mountains and on both sides of the Canada-United States border were central to the formation of a transnational white working-class alliance aimed at restricting the flow of Chinese labor into North America. Looking at the intersections of race, class, ethnicity, and gender, this project reveals a complicated history of relations between the Irish and Chinese in Australia, Canada, and the United States, which began in earnest with the mid-nineteenth century gold rushes in California, New South Wales, Victoria, and British Columbia.

Over several decades, a large stock market, high taxes on inherited income, a sound institutional environment, and capital account openness accompa- nied the rise of widely held firms. At mid-century, the Canadian large cor- porate sector was primarily freestanding widely held firms, as in the mod- ern large corporate sectors of the United States and United Kingdom. During his term as Manitoba’s fourth Lieutenant-Governor, James Cox Aikins witnessed what was perhaps one of the most formative and dramatic stages of the province’s development. Although much of his life was spent in southern Ontario, finding success within the ranks of the Conservative party, his brief gubernatorial career spanned a transitional period in Manitoba’s history where the last traces of the old Red River era were scraped away and replaced with a commercially aggressive, democratically oriented society.1 This new Manitoba society actively pursued its aspirations and soon became involved in a legendary struggle with the federal government over the disallowance of provincial railway legislation.
