Hymn 541 Come labor on

1 of 13

Psalm 34 Benedicam Dominum, 1–10

Cantor(s) 1 I will | bless the LORD at all times; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2 I will glory in the LORD; * let the humble hear and rejoice.

3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; * let us exalt his Name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me * and delivered me out of all my terror.

5 Look upon him and be radiant, * and let not your faces be ashamed. 6 I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me * and saved me from all my troubles.

2 of 13 7 Te angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, * and he will deliver them. 8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; * happy are they who trust in him!

9 Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, * for those who fear him lack nothing. 10 Te young lions lack and suffer hunger, * but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good.

Glory | to the Father and to the Son, and to the : * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Lesson James 1:19–27 — Hearing and Doing the Word

Lector A Reading from the letter of James.

You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce ’s righteousness. Terefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, im- mediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing.

If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their dis- tress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

4 of 13 Gospel Matthew 6:1–6, 16–18 — Concerning Almsgiving, , & Fasting

Lector A Reading from the Gospel according to Matthew.

“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hyp- ocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will re- ward you.

“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 of 13

“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they dis- fgure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Here ends the Reading.

Sermon Te Very Rev. Kevin C. Carroll

Apostles’ (Recto tono)

Officiant & People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucifed, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy , the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
