Gilliland-Swetland, Committee Chair Abstract This dissertation describes the International Women’s Network Against Militarism’s (IWNAM) political epistemology of security from an archival perspective, and how they create community archives to evidence this epistemology. This research examines records created by Women for Genuine Security (WGS) and Women’s Voices Women Speak (WVWS), U.S. and Hawaiʻi based partners of the IWNAM. These records document the emergence of the IWNAM between 1997 and 2012, as women from the countries of South Korea, Japan, Okinawa, Philippines, Australia, Republic of Belau, Guam, Marshall Islands, Hawaiʻi, U.S., Puerto Rico, and Vieques shared information about the negative effects of militarism and strategies of resistance. By describing the archival systems of WGS and WVWS, insights on the IWNAM's knowledge production and archive creation processes are revealed. The archive is conceptualized as the expression of a record creator’s “will,” an immaterial force that materializes through the dynamic creation of records and recordkeeping systems that coordinate resources and ii labor to build organizations, institutions and infrastructures. The IWNAM archive is embedded in the Imperial Archive, an imperialist will that creates and legitimizes bi- lateral security agreements, such as the Status of Forces Agreements (SOFA) between the U.S. and South Korea and the U.S. and Japan; and the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) between the U.S. and the Philippines. The functions of these agreements are to adapt Westphalian philosophies of security, i.e. Eurocentric militaristic development and international relations, into new territories and contexts. Autoethnography, action research, and archival analysis were used to examine how the IWNAM's record creation and recordkeeping processes are driven by social practices and research to redefine security. The IWNAM archive is conceptualized as a complex adaptive system that facilitates public self-reflection on community embeddedness within militarized orders and creative agency to transform their conditions. iii This dissertation of Ellen-Rae Cabebe Cachola is approved. This list is the LibraryReads list, a celebration of the titles library staff love. LibraryReads is unique in that the list is not trying to pick “the best” of anything, and there are no judges or juries. The monthly list is the collective favorites of the library staff who have voted — the books we loved reading and cannot wait to share! Participation is open to everyone who works in a public library, both senior staff and new arrivals, no matter which area of the library they work in. The more the merrier — LibraryReads is designed to be inclusive, and to represent a broad range of reading tastes. This is already well-established in the field of children’s books – but perhaps not as widely acknowledged for adult books. INTRODUCTION 2003 2002 This article examines major prosecutions in New South Wales and 2001 Queensland for blackbirding practices in Melanesian waters, and early regulation under the Imperial Kidnapping Act that was meant to 2000 correct problems those prosecutions raised. It considers how legal 1999 argument and adjudication appropriated the political debate on the question whether the trade in Melanesian labour to Queensland and 1998 Fiji amounted to slaving, and whether references to slaving in 1997 Australian courts only compounded the difficulties of deterring recruiting abuses in Melanesia. It is suggested that, even though the Imperial Government conceived of the Kidnapping Act as a measure to deal with slaving, its success in Australian courts depended on its avoiding any reference to the idea of slavery in the legislation itself. This is developed in three parts. Part 1 provides the social context, introducing the trade in Melanesian labour for work in Queensland. Part 2 explores the prosecutions brought under the slave trade legislation and at common law against labour recruiters, especially those arising from incidents involving the Daphne and the Jason. It attempts to uncover the way that lawyers in these cases used arguments from the broader political debate as to whether the trade amounted to slaving. Part 3 concludes with an account of the relatively more effective regulation brought by the Kidnapping Act, with tentative suggestions as to how the arguments about slaving in Australian courts influenced the form that regulation under the Act had to take.

An inadequate tri­ bute to those ruffians whose salty tales, told in Mar­ tin's Ship Chandlery, spiced with the odour of tarred hemp, canvas and cordage, stirred the imagination of a small boy sixty years ago: specially to John Poro from whom came many a welcome sixpence for some small act of service rendered. To me John Poro was a nice old gentleman; I still think so despite the later knowledge, that he was indicted, though discharged for manslaughter. This paper consists of two sections, one dealing with the subject from a different angle, I hope, from those previously presented. No stress has been laid upon the ethical, economic, or legislative implications. The object sought has been to give a general and ob­ jective view of this colourful period. The second sec­ tion of this paper contains a brief record of some 130 vessels engaged in recruiting South Sea Island labour since its beginning in 1863 to its conclusion in 1902; this as a record of vessels, masters, incidents, and fates is of no immediate interest but, documented reasonably well, may prove of service to some more ex­ haustive future survey. Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) was an English chemist who made several important contributions to science before she died of ovarian cancer at the early age of 37. Despite her numerous scientific achievements, she is perhaps best known for her proximities to the Nobel Prize: for her work on the molecular structure of viruses for which her collaborator Aaron Klug was awarded the prize in 1982; and, more often referenced, her work on the discovery of the structure of DNA, for which her colleagues Francis Crick, James Watson, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1962. The story of the 1962 Nobel work is often heralded as a classic example of the “Matilda effect”. The term, coined by sociologist Margaret Rossiter (1993) and named after Matilda Gage (1826-98), describes scholars who receive less recognition than expected or deserved, given their contributions to science. This effect is placed counter to Merton’s (1968) “Matthew effect”1, in which established scholars receive disproportionate credit due to mechanisms of cumulative advantage. In describing the Matthew Effect, Merton acknowledged the underside of the disproportionate allocation of rewards, but suggested that structurally this asymmetry could be overcome by lesser-known scholars communicating their ideas to those with the capital to disseminate it.
