AMERICAN CONNITTEE FOR AND ALGERIA

St at ement of Purposes

We, an independent group of Ame r i can citizens, have formed the American Committee for France and Algeria, with the express purpose of supporting the people of France and Algeria in their search for an equitable solution to the Algerian problem. We feel that it is the duty of our country to back France, its oldest ally, and the People of Algeria i n t his crucial struggle. We believe that France has demonstrated great moral courage i n granting to the population of Algeria the freedom to choose their political destiny. At the same time, we believe that France has demonstrat ed the greatest moral responsibili ty_toward the inhabitants of that territory by conti nuing to protect them from the violence and \ terror of the rebel minority who, for t he last five years, have inflicted brutal and savage forms of murder, mutilation and extortion in order to bend the Algerian people to their will.

We believe that in the f i nal analysis the people of Algeria, of their own free choice, will choose integration and uni on with France. The Algerian people have already twice expressed via t he bal l ot thei r overwhelming desire to be integrated with France, and these demons trations of loyalty indicate clearly that the rebels do not have the popular suppor t of t he Algerian masses.

We further believe that the path toward integration, which was begun 130 years ago, has been a natural and inevit able one . Economically, politically, culturally and ethnically the two territ ories have been moving closer and closer to irre vocable union. The rebellion has merely dramatized the pressing need for inte gration and stimulated the integrative forces to work faster and better.

As a group, the American Committee for Fr ance and Algeria, will be dedicated to the task of informing the Ameri can public of the historical and present- day facts of the situation and of the i mportant issues involved. We believe that the terrorists have no right to impose a dictatorship in Algeria over a population which, if anything, is multi-r aci al and multi-religious. We strongly believe that Algeria, as an integrated part of France, will be a land where ~ the inhabitants will have equal oppo:rtuni ty to grow, develop and fulfill themselves within the context of a great. humani s t. culture and political system, withenor mous capacities for economic growth.

We have faith in France because' we know that she stands for the humanist and liberal traditions of the West. We 'have faith in France because we know that the French are a good people, dedicated to the democratic way ,of life, to intel lectual freedom, to the freedom of art and science - - in short, to the freedom and dignity of the human being.

Dear Friend:

The AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR FRANCE AND ALGEF.IA bas been organized in order to ral.1y American public opinion to support France in her struggle in Algeria. Our program is to bring to the attention of the American pI1bl1c the important issues involved and to show wl:G" we believe that Integration is the most liberal and far-sighted solution to the Algerian problem.

Un;f'ortu.na.tely, the .American press, radio and teleTision 1s greatly biased in favor of the FIll terrorists, who have enormous DlIiIans of carI'7ing on a wide and insidious propaganda eampa.ign against France e.nd. the French people. This campaign has resulted in :m&Xl,Y American pollticlans voicing sympatl'W" with the terrorists instead of their victims.

We, the members of this Comm1ttee, have embarked on the task of trying to ~ this tragic situation. France has been our ally since the very beginning of our nationhood. Our two countries have fought side b.r side in two World Wars for the cause of free dom. • Nevertheless, the raucous propaganda of the Arab and COJI'.IIlJU.Dist blocs in the UN has ma,naged to turn pI.1bl.ic opinion against France in Algeria.

In order to pursue our own vigorous counter-camPAign we mast have the financial support of all those .,ho love France and feel al3 we do cOIlcerning the future or Algeria. We t.herefore urge you to contribute whatever you can to this important cause. our cam.pe.ign can only get underway' when suf'f'icient f'unds are available.

Dear Friend: We, an independent group of American citizens, have formed the AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR FRANCE AND ALGERIA, with the express purpose of supporting France in her search for an equitable solution to the Algerian problem. We believe that in the final analysis the people of Algeria, of their own free choice, will choose integration and union with France. The Algerian people--Moslems and Christians--have already twice expressed via the ballot their overwhelming desire to be integrated with France, and these demonstrations of loyalty indicate clearly that the terrorist rebels do not have the popular support of the Algerian masses.

As a group, the AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR FRANCE AND ALGmIA will be dedicated to the task of informing the American public of the historical and present-day facts of the situation. We are alarmed at the way the raucous propaganda of the Arab and Communist blocs in the UN have managed to turn public opinion against France and blinded Americans to the very real dangers of a Communist victory in North Africa. However, in order for us to be able to pursue our own vigorous counter-campaign we must have the financial and moral support of all those who understand the urgency of this problem. The cause of Western democratic civilization is crucially at stake in this highly strategic area of the Western world. We therefore urge you to contribute whatever you can to this important cause. Our campaign can only get underway when sufficient funds are available. Cliftord,li'orster, Chairman
