Material: Abstract: This collection documents the history and activities of the InsideOut Literary Arts Project based in Detroit, Michigan. Founded in 1995 by Dr. Terry Blackhawk, its mission was to place professional poets and fiction writers in Detroit Schools to encourage imaginative writing and to promote self-esteem and confidence in students. In addition to administrative files of the Organization, the collection also includes literary magazines featuring student poetry, photographs, audio recordings and video. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, Wayne State University" ^ Return to Table of Contents Biographical / Historical Inside out was founded in 1995 by Dr. Terry Blackhawk—a retired teacher, professor and author of numerous essays and three volumes of poetry. In its early stages, InsideOut placed writers in five Detroit high schools. The organization's mission is to place professional poets and fiction writers in Detroit Schools to encourage imaginative writing and to promote self-esteem and confidence through - Page 3- Guide to the InsideOut Literary Arts Project Records UR002701 publicizing and celebrating their work. Each year every participating school would have professionally bound and printed literary magazines featuring their students' work. By 2018, InsideOut had expanded to conducting programs in twenty-three Detroit Public Schools for students in grades ten through twelve, with additional programs in middle and elementary schools. InsideOut's many programs include: Citywide Poets, an after-school poetry performance workshop for high school students, founded in 1997; Detroit Visions, a poetry and photography workshop for youth, founded in 1998; and the Writer in Residence program which places professional poets and writers in Detroit Schools, founded in 1995. InsideOut has collaborated with: PuppetArt Theater, the University of Michigan's Master of Fine Arts Program, the Michigan Opera Theatre, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. They have also been honored with many awards, grants, an invitation to the White House, and a feature on the PBS NewsHour series, "Where Poetry Lives". ^ Return to Table of Contents Scope and Content Series 1: Administrative Files, 1988-2016 This series contains reports, correspondence, founding documents, Board of Directors materials, meeting minutes, news articles and clippings, teaching materials, handbooks, manuals, conference and event materials, program documentation, and fundraising and grant materials, and other documents related to the daily activities of the organiziation. Series 2: Publications, 1987-2016 These publications featuring student poetry, are from InsideOut's Writer in Residence Programs, Citywide Poets, Detroit Brave New Voices, various workshops, and other InsideOut programs. Series 3: AV Materials, 1995-2010 Series 3 consists of photographs, negatives, scrapbooks, and VHS tapes documenting InsideOut's many programs. Folders in each series are simply listed by their location within each box. They are not arranged, so any given subject may be dispersed throughout several boxes within each series.
