VICTORIA AMAZONICA: ОДНА ІЗ ДИВОВИЖНИХ І ПРЕКРАСНИХ РОСЛИН В ТРОПІЧНОМУ ЛІСІ АМАЗОНКИ

Abstract. Described the history of origin, scientific classification of one of the species of flowering plants, the largest representative of family − Victoria Amazonica or Victoria regia. Keywords: Victoria amazonica, Guiana, water basin of Amazon river, Tadeáš Haenke, Robert Schomburgk, John Lindley, the Waterlily House, the Princess of Wales Conservatory (Кew, London).

At the beginning of 1837, the inaugural year of Queen Victoria’s long reign, a colossal water lily was discovered in the tropical wilds of a remote South American region that had recently become British colony, while charting the Amazonian country of Guiana for Great Britain, German naturalist sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk (Fig. 1) [5; 12] (he was a German-born explorer for Great Britain who carried out geographical, ethnological and botanical studies in (Fig. 4) and the West Indies) discovered an astounding "vegetable wonder" − a huge water lily whose were five or six feet across and whose flowers were dazzlingly white. In England, a horticultural nation with a mania for gardens and flowers, news of the discovery sparked a race to bring a live specimen back, and to bring it to bloom. In this extraordinary , named Victoria regia (Fig. 3, 7, 9) for the newly crowned queen, the flower-obsessed British had found their beautiful ideal [5]. The Amazon River System meanders through nine South America countries: Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Suriname, , French Guiana and Venezuela before entering Brazil and flowing out of its Atlantic coast [9] (see Fig. 4, 5).

Now Victoria Regia is the national flower of Guyana (Fig. 2). At first the name of Guyana’s national flower was Victoria Amazonica. Commonly known as water lily, which is an aquatic type flower. The Victoria Regia or Victoria Amazonica is the ever biggest of all the water Lily throughout the world. It also called Giant water lily due to its size. It is native to the Amazon and adjacent South American areas mostly found in shallow water basin of Amazon river and river banks [15].

Guyana’s coat of arms (Fig. 6) was accepted on 25 February 1966 by the Parliament, after Queen Elizabeth II introduced it on 21 January of the same year. It includes a crest of an Amerindian head-dress symbolizing the indigenous people of the country; two diamonds at the sides of the head-dress representing mining industry; a helmet (monarchial insignia); two jaguars as supporters holding a pick axe, sugar cane, and a stalk of rice (symbolizing Guyana’s sugar and rice industries); a shield decorated with the Victoria regia lily, Guyana’s national flower (Fig. 7); three blue wavy lines representing the three main rivers of Guyana; and the national bird, the Canje Pheasant. The state motto appears on the scroll below the shield (https://caribbeanflags.wordpress.com/2011/11/29/the-coat-of-arms-of-guyana/) Victoria regia, as it was named and described by Tadeáš Haenke (Fig. 8) in 1801, when he continued his botanical exploration of Bolivia, Peru and Brazil. That year he made one of his most memorable discoveries, the giant water lily, Victoria amazonica, with a six-foot wide lily pad. Victoria amazonica is classified under the genus of Victoria and the family of Nymphaeaceae, the species found its first description published in October 1837 by

John Lindley (Fig. 10). He was an English botanist, gardener and orchidologist. Lindley gave the plant the botanical name of Victoria Regia, with the genus named after Queen Victoria [6].

Victoria amazonica (Fig. 7, 9) is a species of , the largest of the Nymphaeaceae family of water lilies. It is the National flower of Guyana. Below we present the scientific classification of the plant: Scientific classification Kindom: Plantae Clade: Tracheophyes Clade: Angiosperms Order: Nymphaeaceae Family: Nymphaeaceae Genus: Victoria Species: Victoria amazonica Binomial name: Victoria amazonica Synonyms: Euryale amazonica (Poepp); Nymphaea victoria (M.R.Schomb. ex Lindley); Victoria regina (R.H.Schomb); Victoria regia (Lindley) [14]. Found in: Guyana and Tropical South America Color: White, Pink, Red, Blue and yellow Number of petals: above hundred Color: White, Pink, Red, Blue and yellow Number of petals: above hundred Number of Sepals: above hundred Time of blooming: July to August. Purpose: Decoration, Food and herbal value Symbolism: Purity of soul and unity. [15].

Hailing from the Amazon rainforest is a lily pad so big a human can sit on it. On this episode [2] we take a look at the Victoria Lily. Discovered in 1801 this lily was first called Eurgale Amazonica. In 1837 John Lindley published the first description of the Victoria lily, changing the name to honor Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Being an uncooperative plant among others in nature, usually lilies will filter light from the surface which allows algae to grow. The Victoria lily is so dense that no light penetrates through their skin making life dark and unlivable for

To top it off, the underside of these massive lilies are covered in sharp spikes that keep herbivorous fish from eating them. Measuring 10 feet or 3 meters in diameter this lily not only has huge leaves but a massive stalk under the water. The stalk reaches 26 feet or 8 meters tall that attaches to the soil at the bottom of the pond. This plant has a unique pollination process, a flower on the surface of the water will bloom for just 48 hours. It’ll open up to attract a beetle, once a beetle is within the petals of the flower it’ll snap shut holding the beetle hostage for 24 hours. The next day the beetle will be released to go pollinate a different flower. After the mission is complete the flower closes and retracts back under the water. Found in the Amazon rainforest in the wild they can also be found on limited display at Shuangxi Park in Taipei Taiwan where visitors can sit on one for a quick selfie. Groups of 60 people per day are allowed to sit on the lillies. This is made possible by the hard work of staff of the park. They have to fight off the cutworms from eating the lilies while they are small. Tiny bites in the young leaves will make them unable to develop and grow to full size. A maximum of 63 kgs is all these lilies can take up to 60 seconds at a time [2].

Victoria amazonica is an ornamental plant and highly prized. The seeds are also used as food when roasted. The design of Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace in 1851 came from the leaves of the plant (Fig. 11, 12).

The lily, with ribbed undersurface and leaves veining "like transverse girders and supports", was Paxton's inspiration for The Crystal Palace in London [1], culminated in his design of the architectural wonder of the age, the Crystal Palace. Fittingly, Paxton based his design on a glass-house he had recently built to house Victoria regia. Indeed, the natural ribbing of the lily's leaf inspired the pattern of girders supporting the massive iron-and-glass building. The Great Exhibition was the first in the series of world's fair. It was an exhibition of culture and industry. It was organized by Henry Cole and Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert. It took place in Hyde Park in London, from May to October 1851 and was housed within the famous Crystal Palace which established the highest architectural standard for all later international fairs and exhibitions and became one of the most iconic buildings of the 19th century (http://architectuul.com/architecture/the-crystal-palace) The Crystal Palace, designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, was a remarkable construction of prefabricated parts. On the night of November 30–December 1, 1936, it was virtually destroyed by fire [1].
