By GRANT JOHNSTON

Generous assistance from sponsors has enabled Te Awamutu College to put some real wind in the sails of its budding yachties. The purchase of two new Topaz Uno Raceplus boats cost over $15,000 and would not have been possible without the help of Lion Foundation, Colourform Joinery and Living- stone Building. Sponsors’ representatives got to see the boats in action with students at a launching evening at Lake Ngaroto recently, where they helped to rig them out and watched the students sail in them. The project was initiated by College teacher Zowie Newton, who was rapt to see it come to fruition. ‘‘They are very exciting boats, fast and easy to sail. The sponsors have helped provide a fantastic asset for the young people of Te Awa- mutu,’’ Mr Newton says. The College remains indebted to TC151111SP5B Ngaroto Sailing Club, which has for SPONSOR Scott Dunn of Colourform Joinery (right), with College some time assisted with the loan of TC151111SP5A teacher Zowie Newton (left) and student sailors, from left: Dale Corlett, boats for students to learn to sail in COLLEGE students relished the chance to try out the new Topaz Uno Thomas Piercy, Conor Dunn, Shea Gosnell, Kieran Price, Chester and will continue to do this. Approximately 5000 people attended the ninth consecutive Te Awamutu Christian Churches annual Light Party at Selwyn Park. The churches once again came together in an expression of unity and to demonstrate their love in a practical way for this awesome ‘gift to the community’. The 5000 barbecued sausages and 5000 drinks ran out after just two and a half hours. The queues for the fun activities and games were huge, but patience abounded throughout the entire evening. This year it was noted that a number of non- churched folk came on board as volunteers, acknowledging the impact the Light Party has on the community. A huge thank you must go to the local churches for superb team work. Appreciation is also due to Pak’n Save for generous discounts on the prices of the sausages and drinks. Thanks must also be given to Te Awamutu Community Board for their $1500 grant. Plans are already underway for the 10th anniversary of the Light Party coming up on October 31, 2012 with added activities. TC151111SP6A TC151111SP6B Chris Lane offered the following thoughts: ‘‘I SHILOH JOHNSTON soaks up the Light Party atmo- YOUNG AT HEART Karlie Te Rongomau and Tahi Mangu enjoying the first encountered the Te Awamutu Light party in sphere. Motivated to offer a safe, family friendly alternative to Halloween; the churches pooled their resources and offered something that is very rarely seen, not just in Te Awamutu but anywhere in the country: something for nothing. Giving away thousands of drinks and sausages and offering up free rides and games the volunteers who drove the event worked tirelessly, without any hidden agenda or secret motive, to simply serve the community in a positive manner. ‘‘The Te Awamutu Light Party is a tremendous event that provides for the full cross section of our community and in doing so cannot help but enhance the town’s community spirit.’’ Te Awamutu Combined Christian Church Leaders Association (TACCLA) says Christians are united through God’s practical love of giving His son Jesus for them. ‘‘As John 13:35 says: ‘by TC151111SP6C TC151111SP6D this all will know that you are My disciples, if you PREVIOUSLY they enjoyed participating in the Light Party, this time SARA PAYNE relished wearing a painted face at the have love for one another’.’’ back as volunteers were Lasharnei Winika (left) and Arohaina Jones. BY COLIN THORSEN

Melville made it two tournament wins from three outings taking out the Sealy Posturepedic Te Awamutu Sevens at Albert Park on Saturday. The Hamiltonians looked sharp all day led by new Chief Declan O’Donnell and his two brothers Kylem and Riley. Melville were held to 14-10 at halftime by a well- drilled Rangiuru side from Tauranga, coached by former New Zealand Sevens speedster Peter Woods, with assistance from the legendary Gordon Tietjens, whose son Paul plays in the side. But it was all one-way traffic after halftime — Melville waltzing away to a 33-10 victory as the O’Donnells and co spun their magic. Melville had won the opening sevens tournament of the series at Te Rapa, then bowed out in the quarter-finals at Hinuera — beaten by Morrinsville, a side they thrashed 33-5 in the semi-finals at Te Awamutu. Rangiuru made the final beating Hamilton Marist 19-17 in the semi-finals. The 22nd Te Awamutu Sevens saw a very high standard of play, with some top clubs not making the championship round. TC151111CT04 Fraser Tech looked the club to beat in the round- BACK of the tournament, Melville’s Kylem robin before stumbling against Morrinsville, 24-19, O’Donnell (in possession) proved a constant to finish second in their pool. They then met Melville thorn in Rangiuru’s side with his deft footwork in the quarter-finals, losing 21-17 to end up in the and electrifying speed. plate with Hautapu, Hinuera and Te Awamutu Sports. Te Awamutu Sports, after losing heavily to Rangiuru, had to beat Hamilton Old Boys to make the championship round. They did so convincingly, 21-7, to put Hamilton OB into the bowl com- petition. It is the first time in 22 years that Old Boys haven’t made the Te Awamutu championship quarter-finals. Te Awamutu Sports then lost 19-0 to Hamilton Marist in the quarters, before losing 22-19 to Fraser Tech in the plate final. Otorohanga took out the bowl with a 29-12 win over Whakarewa- rewa. The Consolation final resulted in a 19-17 win for Greerton Marist over Te Rapa. Kylem O’Donnell took out the Kukri back of the tournament, with Te Awamutu Sport’s Inoke Tuibua taking out forward of the tournament.
