First and foremost is Keith Woods’ interview with rockabilly favourite and bass-player Billy Harlan. There is an introduction by Woody Dominique Anglares and the interview is accompanied by vintage photos as well as a session discography. Another main feature is on Little Richard’s role model Billy Wright, the Atlanta blues and R&B singer – this accompanied by lots of photos, clippings from Billboard and Cashbox, label shots in colour, and definitive session and record discographies. The magazine also includes an in-depth article on Nashville songwriter and performer Royce Porter, whilst the instrumentals series continues for lovers of the genre, and then add to this an essay by Kaye Garren, one of the members of The Heathens whose acetate recorded at the Sun studio in 1956 has recently been issued on 45rpm. As well as the label shots, the colour section includes photos of Waylon Jennings, Jessie Colter and Willie Nelson when they visited Sweden in 1970.

  • The Pirates and Pop Music Radio
SELLING THE SIXTIES Was pirate radio in the sixties a non-stop psychedelic party – an offshore discothèque that never closed? Or was there more to it than hip radicalism and floating jukeboxes? From the mavericks in the Kings Road and the clubs ofSohotothemultinationaladvertisers andbigbusiness boardrooms Selling the Sixties examines the boom of pirate broadcasting in Britain. Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One. Selling the Sixties utilizes previously unseen evidence from the pirates’ own archives, revealing interviews with those directly involved, and rare audio material from the period. This fascinating look at the relationship between unauthorized broadcasting and the growth of pop culture will appeal not only to students of communications, mass media, and cultural studies but to all those with an enthusiasm for radio history, pop, and the sixties. Robert Chapman’s broadcasting experience includes BBC local radio in Bristol and Northampton. He has also contributed archive material to Radios One and Four. He is currently Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of Performing Arts and Media Studies at Salford College of Technology. • Gender Discrimination in the Classical Conducting World
BEING UNABLE TO CONDUCT BRUCKNER: GENDER DISCRIMINATION IN THE CLASSICAL CONDUCTING WORLD by ALESSANDRA CLAIR HOLLOWELL A THESIS Presented to the School of Music and Dance and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Music June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Alessandra Clair Hollowell for the degree of Bachelor of Music in the School of Music and Dance to be taken June 2016 Title: Being Unable to Conduct Bruckner: Gender Discrimination in the Classical Conducting World Approved: _______________________________________ Dr. Rodney C. Dorsey Classical music conductors throughout time have overwhelmingly been white and male and this is not due to chance. It has been only in the past thirty years that women have been able to become conductors, which is traditionally seen as a leadership role in the orchestra. This thesis looks to understand how women have historically been excluded from conducting and closely examines the lives of four women who broke through the glass ceiling to see how they can become models for today’s female conductors. Women of color, women in composition, and women in jazz are also studied. Solutions to increase equality in the conducting field are discussed at the conclusion. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Dr. Rodney Dorsey for agreeing to be my primary thesis advisor and Lou DeMartino and Louise Bishop for serving on my thesis committee. I would also like to thank my parents, William and Luisa Hollowell, for supporting me throughout college in countless ways, whether attending recitals, orientations, football games, a thesis defense, graduation ceremonies, and always remembering to call me when I get too busy.
