Theatre at UBC MFA Directing students test their mettle with two searing one-act adaptations of stories from ancient Greece presented in a special three-night double bill.

MFA Directing Candidate Catriona Leger has worked across Canada for over twelve years as an actor, director, creator and instructor. Most recently she was Assistant Director on Gormenghast (Frederic Wood Theatre) after completing an Artistic Director internship at the Great Canadian Theatre Company. She is a graduate of Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris, France and holds a BFA in Acting (UBC). Catriona is a recipient of the JBC Watkins Award in Theatre from the Canada Council for the Arts.

MFA Directing Candidate Mindy Parfitt is Co Artistic Director of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre. For them, she has directed both their award winning productions - Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis and Daniel MacIvor’s You Are Here. In Montreal, she founded SoulfishingTheatre for whom she directed and acted and she has worked with many companies including Centaur Theatre, Theatre Columbus, Dark Horse Theatre and Tarragon Theatre. Locally she has worked for Studio 58, Bard on the Beach, Playwrights Theatre Centre and The PuSh Festival. Mindy will be co-directing Judith Thompson’s play, Palace of the End in May at the PAL Theatre with David Bloom and Katrina Dunn.

Both these adaptations are drawn from John Barton’s “The Greeks”, a ten-play epic performance drawn from , Euripides, Sophocles, and . In it Barton retells ancient stories for a new generation, to refresh and invigorate our understanding of our shared past. The cycle of plays focuses on what is most important and epic story in Greek myth, the Trojan war and its aftermath, but tells the story on a decidedly human scale, focusing on individual families, relationships, and emotions rather than on grand battles and complex political machinations.

The Trojan Women directed by Catriona Leger stars BFA Acting Candidates Maria Luisa Alvarez, Veronica Baylie, Ali Glinert, Seana McFadden and Fiona Mongillo with Lisa Twardowska and Colin Ormiston. The creative team includes MFA Design Candidates Ana Luisa (Set), Conor Moore (Lighting) with BFA Design Candidate Zoe Green (Costumes) and BFA Production Candidates Stacy Sherlock (Sound), Mya Brown (Props) and Stage Manager Annie Jang.

Electra directed by Mindy Parfitt features performances by BFA Acting Candidates Kim Bennett, Moneca Lander, Brian Magahay and Russell Zishiri with BA Theatre Candidates Christine Lee and Skye Wallace with Alan Jeans. The creative team includes MFA Design Candidates Ana Luisa (Set) with BFA Design Candidate Basha Ladovsky (Costumes) with BFA Production Candidates Jason Ho (Lighting) Stacy Sherlock (Sound) and Stage Manager Novem Fung.
