Alicia Amatriain Principal Dancer, Stuttgart Ballet, “Kammertaenzerin” Alicia Amatriain Principal Dancer, Stuttgart Ballet, “Kammertaenzerin” Alicia Amatriain was born in San Sebastian, Spain, where she received her first ballet training. She subsequently attended the John Cranko School in Stuttgart from which she graduated in 1998. She joined the Stuttgart Ballet as an apprentice and was taken into the Stuttgart Ballet’s Corps de ballet in 1999. In 2002 she was promoted to Principal Dancer. In 2015 she was awarded the national title of “Kammertaenzerin”, the highest status a dancer can achieve in Germany. Her repertoire includes the leading roles in John Cranko’s Ballets such as Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Tatiana in Onegin and Katharina in The Taming of the Shrew as well as a wide range of leading roles in full-length ballets such as the title roles in Giselle (after Coralli, Perrot, Petipa), La Sylphide (Peter Schaufuss after August Bournonville) and The Sleeping Beauty (Marcia Haydée after Petipa), Kitri in Don Quijote (Maximiliano Guerra after Petipa), Marguerite in The Lady of the Camellias and Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire (both John Neumeier). In addition, she dances works by, a.o., George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Glen Tetley, Maurice Béjart, Kenneth MacMillan, William Forsythe and Hans van Manen. Several renowned choreographers have created roles for Alicia Amatriain in their ballets, including Wayne McGregor, Itzik Galili, Marco Goecke, Douglas Lee and Demis Volpi. Christian Spuck created the leading role in his ballet Lulu especially for her. Alicia Amatriain has received many honors and prizes such as the prestigious Prix Benois de la Dance in 2016, the German Theater Prize FAUST in 2015 and the German Dance Prize “Future” in 2006. Guest performances have led her to companies all over the world, including the Bolshoi Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Cuban National Ballet, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires and the State Ballet of Berlin. .

    Introduction The World Ballet Festival Returns for Summer 2018 From the 14th World Ballet FestivalPhoto: Kiyonori Hasegawa For more than 40 years now, the most talented and renowned dancers have come to Tokyo from around the world to perform in the World Ballet Festival, which will once again be held this summer. When it was first introduced in 1976 under the leadership of Tadatsugu Sasaki, it was very rare for the star ballerinas of different companies or countries to share a stage. Its first edition caused an international sensation by bringing together three legends, Margot Fonteyn from the UK, Maya Plisetskaya from the Soviet Union and Alicia Alonso from Cuba. Since then stars such as Jorge Donn, Patrick Dupond, Sylvie Guillem, Alessandra Ferri, Manuel Legris and Vladimir Malakhov have become regular participants, bringing the audiences to a storm of excitement every time and inspiring them to watch and compare all the dancers perform. The circle of energy created between audiences and artists in this festival produces an atmosphere that motivates dancers to perform to the best of their abilities, and has resulted in many legendary performances. Featuring the world's leading dancers, all from different artistic backgrounds and representing a wide variety of repertoire and styles, the festival also offers an opportunity to observe an overview of today's ballet scene. While there are now many similar festivals, the quality of both artists and audiences at the World Ballet Festival continues to be amongst the highest in the world. Today, she stands at the pinnacle of her career. The "Prix Benois de la Danse" is the Oscar among prizes for ballet dancers and Alicia Amatriain only recently joined the elite circle of winners. She received the international award in the "Female Dancer" category for her stupendous portrayal of the Devil in Demis Volpi's "The Soldier's Tale" and the role of Blanche DuBois in John Neumeier's "A Streetcar Named Desire". After her appointment as Kammertänzerin (dancer-laureate) by the State of Baden-Württemberg and the German Theatre Award "Der Faust" in the category "Best dance performer", it is the Spaniard's third award this season – an absolute top achievement which makes her a superstar in the ballet scene. "It came as a total surprise to me. I just didn't expect it. I was thrilled to bits," said Alicia enthusiastically. Reid Anderson, Director of the Stuttgart Ballet, congratulated his Principal Female Dancer. "Alicia has worked very hard for many years. Her discipline and dedication to dance have made her into a world-class dancer and into a muse for many choreographers. I couldn't be happier for her!" Ballet was only a hobby for Alicia when she was a child. But it soon became obvious that she was exceptionally talented. She was graceful, incredibly expressive and agile.
