Valley District Cricket Club, the home club of Queensland Bulls players Matthew Hayden, Joe Dawes, and Lee Carseldine, is 103 years old. The club is one of the three oldest surviving Brisbane district clubs - Souths and Toombul are the others – all having started in the 1897/98 season.

Valley has been home to many wonderful players, some of the more notable ones being Allan Border (Club Patron and still a supporter), Leo O’Connor (Qld’s first Sheffield Shield ), Alex Hurwood, Don Tallon, Malcolm Francke, Keith Dudgeon, Greg Ritchie, Kepler Wessels, Peter Anderson, Brett Henschell, Stuart Law, and Matthew Hayden.

Current contracted players are: ACB: Matthew Hayden; QCA: Joe Dawes and Lee Carseldine.

Former Queensland Reds coach, John Connolly, is a former Valley player and is even the holder of a club record - a century in each of a match - 121 and 105 in a Third Grade game against Wynnum in 1969/70.

Former Test Umpire, the late Col Hoy, who officiated in the memorable Gabba in 1960/61, was a Life Member and active supporter of the club.

The club boasts a wonderful, leafy location in the foothills of the Taylor Range at Yoku Road, Ashgrove, where it shares grounds with well-known Brisbane rugby club, GPS Old Boys RUFC.

Valley is also one of Brisbane’s most successful cricket clubs having achieved the following recent titles; First Grade Premiers 94/95, 96/97; First Grade One-Day Premiers 96/97, 00/01; Club Champions 90/91, 91/92, 92/93, 96/97, 00/01; and Women’s First Grade Premiers 94/95, 95/96, 96/97.

Valley is also, as far as we are aware, the largest cricket club in Australia, with 57 teams, approximately 720 players in total.

The club has ten senior men’s teams (Grades: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th – two teams, 5th – two teams, Over 40s; and Sub Districts teams B2 and C1), an Under 18 Grade team, an Under 16 Lord’s Taverners Grade team, and a Women’s First Grade team which contains a number of Queensland Fire representatives including Australian squad member, Tricia Brown.

Valley also boasts forty-four Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association junior teams ranging from Under 8’s to Under 16’s.

The success of the club’s juniors is due to the excellence of the Junior Management Committee and its philosophies which includes it’s main objective or mission statement:

“Junior cricket is about boys and girls learning the skill to play cricket, being part of a team, being allowed to participate and improve their skills. Combined with this is the importance of belonging, sharing and having fun. Junior cricket is not about winning; it is about learning the skills and personal improvement. Winning is a by-product of these factors. During the season, all coaches are to rotate their players to ensure they are given equal opportunity to develop and individually improve their skills and be involved in the game of cricket. This applies to all age groups.”

The club has adopted the “KEEPING YOUTH BUSY IN SPORT” motto and is certainly doing it’s bit to provide the local community with facilities and activities to live up to this motto.

However, success is not achieved without effort and expense. The club allocates significant resources to playing and training facilities, and coaching.

Valley is fortunate to have a team of committed and talented voluntary office-bearers - some of whom are listed on the following page.
