PREFACE HE writings of the Transcendentalists of New England have been from youth of especial interest to me. An investi- gation of the phenomena of New-England Transcendentalism was instigated by a reading of the chapter on 'l‘ranscendentalism in Professor Barrett Wendell’s Literary History of America. The idea of making a specialty of the French influence in its relation to New-England Transcendentalism as a subject for a doctorate thesis was intimated to me by Professor LeB. R. Briggs, Dean of the Harvard University faculty. Thanks for assistance in the course of actually drawing up the dissertation are due— first, to Dr. Albert Lefevre, professor of philosophy at the University of Virginia, for valuable suggestions concerning the definition of Transcendentalism ; next, to Dr. It. H. Wilson and adjunct-professor Dr. E. P. Dargan, of the depart— ment of Romance Languages at the University of Virginia, for kind help in the work of revision and correction, and, finally, to Dr. Charles W. Kent, professor at the head of the department of English at the University of Virginia, for general supervision of - my work on the thesis. In the work of compiling and writing the thesis I have been _ swayed by two motives: first, the purpose to gather by careful research and investigation certain definite facts concerning the French philosophers and the Transcendental movement in New England; and, secondly, the desire to set forth the information amassed in a cursory and readable style. -

Don’t Fall in: Guide To RI’s Waterfalls, Swimmin’ Holes & More! Dams/Waterfalls 1. Ashton and Albion Falls, Lincoln. A walkway and bike path runs along the Blackstone River, bejewelled by the historic Ashton and Albion dams. 2. & 3. Blackstone Dam and Blackstone Gorge, Blackstone Mass. Right over the border from North Smithfield, these attractions are known for their abundant wildlife and natural beauty. A rocky trail takes you past stone walls, woods and a sizeable hill, while a mile-long hike can bring you to the dam and gorge to breathe it all in. Accessed from Blackstone River & Canal Heritage State Park, County St, Blackstone, Mass. 4. Cascade Brook, Smithfield. This mile loop in the Ken Weber Conservation Area takes hikers to stone ruins and the high points in the area. About 100 yards from the trailhead, the path leads to a small, but brilliant waterfall. 5. Fisherville Brook Falls, Exeter. After a stop at the waterfall, this easy trail takes walkers to a few historic graves and dense woods. White pines and mini-waterfalls are also to be seen. 6. Georgiaville Dam and Gorge, Smithfield. This dam is a combination of a manmade dam and natural waterfall. To the right there is a short trail that leads to a small area that overlooks the gorge. 7. Harrisville Falls, Burrillville. The gorgeous dam is located in the heart of Harrisville. 8. Hunt’s Mills Falls, East Providence. This dam in the shape of a half moon creates a unique waterfall split in the middle by a huge rock. -

Waterworks System Improvements
Waterworks System Improvements Wachusett Reservoir Integrated Water Supply Improvement Program MWRA’s Integrated Water Supply Improvement Program is an initiative consisting of a series of projects to protect reservoir watersheds, build new water treatment and transmission facilities, upgrade distribution storage and MWRA and community pipelines and interim improvements to the Metropolitan Tunnel system redundancy. The program improves each aspect of the water system from the watersheds to the consumer to ensure that high quality water reliably reaches MWRA customers’ taps. The program began in 1995 with the initial components which were completed by 2005 and the program remains active as the scope was expanded to continue to improve the water system. The main program components are as follows: Watershed Protection The watershed areas around Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs are pristine areas with 85% of the land covered in forest or wetlands and about 75% protected from development by direct ownership or development restrictions. MWRA works in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to manage and protect the watersheds. MWRA also finances all the operating and capital expenses for the watershed activities of DCR and on‐going land acquisition activities. MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel The 17‐mile‐long 14‐foot diameter tunnel connects the new Carroll Water Treatment Plant at Walnut Hill in Marlborough to the greater Boston area. It is now working in parallel with the rehabilitated Hultman Aqueduct to move water into the metropolitan Boston area. Construction began on the tunnel in 1996 and the completed tunnel was placed in service in October 2003. Carroll Water Treatment Plant The water treatment plant in Marlborough began operating in July 2005 and it has a maximum day capacity of 405 million gallons per day. -

Whose River? London and the Thames Estuary, 1960-2014* Vanessa Taylor Univ. of Greenwich, [email protected] I Introduction For the novelist A.P. Herbert in 1967 the problem with the Thames was simple. 'London River has so many mothers it doesn’t know what to do. ... What is needed is one wise, far- seeing grandmother.’1 Herbert had been campaigning for a barrage across the river to keep the tide out of the city, with little success. There were other, powerful claims on the river and numerous responsible agencies. And the Thames was not just ‘London River’: it runs for over 300 miles from Gloucestershire to the North Sea. The capital’s interdependent relationship with the Thames estuary highlights an important problem of governance. Rivers are complex, multi-functional entities that cut across land-based boundaries and create interdependencies between distant places. How do you govern a city that is connected by its river to other communities up and downstream? Who should decide what the river is for and how it should be managed? The River Thames provides a case study for exploring the challenges of governing a river in a context of changing political cultures. Many different stories could be told about the river, as a water source, drain, port, inland waterway, recreational amenity, riverside space, fishery, wildlife habitat or eco-system. -

Suddenly you enter a quieter atmosphere...On the It’s now a Masonic Hall. In the 17th century, the Green was affluent, but by the 19th, as Clerkenwell was right hand side (rhs) is the Finsbury Savings Bank, established at another site in 1816. Flynn 1 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20001 Chief Executive Officer Email [email protected] Tel 202-906-3963 June 28, 2021 The Honorable Peter DeFazio The Honorable Sam Graves Chairman Ranking Member Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure U.S. House of Representatives U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Washington, DC 20515 Dear Chairman DeFazio and Ranking Member Graves: I am writing to express Amtrak’s concerns about reports that the House may include in the INVEST in America Act an amendment that would create a “North Atlantic Rail Compact” (NARC) with an ostensible charge to construct an ill-defined “North Atlantic Rail Network.” Amtrak is strongly opposed to the adoption of this amendment and the likely negative consequences of such a decision for the Northeast Corridor and the national rail network. Adopting the amendment would establish – without any hearings, committee consideration, studies or opportunity for those impacted by the proposal to be heard – support for an infeasible proposal, previously rejected because of the harm it would do to the environment, by an advocacy group called North Atlantic Rail (NAR) to build a new, up to 225 mph dedicated high-speed rail line between New York City and Boston. The dedicated high-speed rail line’s route (NAR Alignment) would not follow the existing Northeast Corridor (NEC) alignment that parallels Interstate 95. Instead, it would travel beneath the East River in a new tunnel; cross dense urban sections of Queens and Long Island to Ronkonkoma; turn north to Port Jefferson; traverse the Long Island Sound in a 16-mile tunnel to Stratford, Connecticut; and after passing through New Haven and Hartford, turn east across Eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island to Providence, from which it would follow the existing NEC rail corridor to Boston. -
