It is also the most populated province. Ontario is also home to the cities of Toronto, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, CN Tower and Lake Ontario. Ontario can be thought of as 1 million square kilometers of greatness. The capital city is Toronto. The capital city of Canada is Ottawa. The governor is Elizabeth Dowdeswell. Ontario is located on the southeast side of Canada. Ontario has grown a lot from its roots and is now considered a modern area. The old titles of the chief law officers, the attorney general and the solicitor general are still in use. They are both responsible to the legislature. The attorney general is responsible for criminal prosecutions and the administration of justice, while the solicitor-general is responsible for a law enforcement and the police services of the provinces. It is important to know laws in Ontario to be sure that nothing happens to you. The Premier of Ontario is Kathleen Wynne, although that could change with the upcoming election. The population is 14,318,750. French and English are two official languages spoken throughout Ms. Weir’s Class OLS • TCDSB 21C Kids Magazine 3 Ontario. The principal language that most people speak is English, the provinces de facto official language, which is spoken by about 70% of the provinces population, according to 2011 census. There is also a French speaking population concentrated in the North Eastern, Eastern, and extreme southern parts of the province, Under the French language Services Act. The government has to speak French fluently. 11% of people in Ontario speak French and English. People that speak two languages fluently are known as bilingual. The 10 largest cities in Ontario are Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London, Markham, Vaughan, Kitchener, and Windsor, based on population. Ontario has some of the best universities in the world and one of the best architecture departments in the World. They are animals that are dying off and now there are very few of them left in the world. Once a species completely dies off it is called extinction. The top 13 most endangered species are the Elephants, Pandas, Cheetahs, Panthers, Tigers, Rhinos, Sea Turtles, Pangolins, American Black Bears, Queen Conch, Endangered Coral, Live Reptiles and Exotic Birds. Many people are wondering why people want to hunt or harm animals? People want to hunt different species because they are valuable in some parts of the world because of their fur and meat. An endangered animal is one whose numbers in population are so small that there is a risk of total extinction. An animal is defined as endangered or threatened when there is damage to its habitat for recreational. Scientists estimate that were losing about 1,000 to 10,000 species a day! Let’s try to make sure that we don’t have to lose as many more species. This final note goes to the people hunting the animals. Please remember that we are no more important than any other species so it isn’t fair to hunt species down as an entertaining activity to do. It is important to be careful of our choices and think before we act. Many species are dying due to climate change and pollution, but we are all God’s creations and we need to respect and love one another. LET’S WORK TOGETHER TO HELP PROTECT THE ENDANGERED SPECIES! This a big concern because this is causing the polar ice caps to melt. When this happens sea levels rise and this can cause dangerous flooding and even extreme climate around the world. Pollution is the main cause of global warming and it can be described as if there is a giant blanket of pollution that is causing earth's surface to warm up. The pollution that is causing climate change is from factories, cars, buses, planes and garbage. Climate change is increasing temperatures, causing extreme weather and damaging many habitats around the world. That is why climate change is so bad. You might be wondering what you can do about climate change or global warming? Well there are a lot of things that we can do to help. First, you could ride your bike or take the bus instead of driving a car. Second, you can make sure that always recycle because this reduces the waste that ends up in landfills. Third, you can be sure to shut your lights off all the time to conserve energy. Forth, you can try and cut down on the amount of garbage you produce. Lastly, be a guardian of the earth. It is the only one we have. Google ways that you can help the planet and spread the word! Ms. Weir’s Class OLS • TCDSB 21C Kids Magazine 6 Terry Fox By: Rosie Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. He was an active teenager and he played in many sports. Terry was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and this was the reason he had to have his right leg amputated. Terry wanted to raise awareness about cancer and thought about running a marathon. Although it was really hard in the beginning, people soon grew really excited, and the money that was donated and collected during the marathon began to mount up. He ran close to 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada’s Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario. However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had moved to his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened when he passed away on June 28, 1981. He was only 22 years old, but today we remember him as a hero. Over $750 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run. This run is held across Canada and around the world. Terry Fox will never be forgotten and students each school year are reminded about his perseverance and strength when they run the Terry Fox Run each September. Ms. Weir’s Class OLS • TCDSB 21C Kids Magazine 7 Ancient Egypt Which Egyptian God Is That? By: Jacob In Ancient Egypt there were over 2,000 Egyptian Deities. There was Ra, the Sun God, and he was the most powerful of them all. He was combined with the wind God Amun and became Amun-Ra. It was said that he was eaten by Nut the Moon Deity and reborn at dusk. There’s also Tefnut Deity of rain and water. Egyptians believed she was spat into existence by Ra. Next,is Bes. Bes’s Job was to protect babies and their moms. He also protected people from nightmares and scorpions. Now, Anubis! He is a jackal-faced God who is deity of the dead. Jackals were seen at cemeteries so he associated with jackals. The Ancient Egyptians also believed in the God of animals, Sobek. He is said to have fiercely protected the Egyptian people. They believed he had a crocodile’s head so, they kept live crocs in the temples. Last, is Hapi! He is said to be God of the Nile and was responsible for the annual flood. P.E.I. is a province. You should know about P.E.I. because it is a province in Canada. P.E.I. was formed on July 1st, 1873. The population of P.E.I. is 146,283. About 46% of the population live in a city or town, and the rest of the population live in a country or rural setting. Also, P.E.I. is one of Canada's eastern maritime provinces. The land area rank is 13th, and P.E.I. is known for its red sand beaches. The largest metro is in Charlottetown. P.E.I. produces 25% of Canada's potatoes, and the island has several informal names like ‘Garden of the Gull’. P.E.I. is located about 200 kilometers north of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and about 600 kilometers east of Quebec City. Charlottetown is the capital city of P.E.I and is considered to be the Birthplace Of Confederation. Recently, the city celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference – an event that made the founding of Canada in 1867 possible. The Mi’kmaqs were the first people to live on Prince Edward Island. The island was named Prince Edward in 1799 in honour of Queen Victoria’s father whose name was Edward, Duke of Kent. The capital city Charlottetown is named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III. There are four Members of Parliament from Prince Edward Island out of a total of 305 seats. There is also a 27 seat Legislative Assembly in PEI. The premier of PEI is Robert Ghiz, who is a Liberal.
