On June 1, 2013 held its annual Age Class Awards and Hall of Fame Banquet at the Canad Inns Garden City Hotel. During the event Volleyball Manitoba formally inducts new members into its Hall of Fame. This year Volleyball Manitoba inducted two athletes, three coaches and one team. We are pleased to announce the Volleyball Manitoba Hall of Fame Inductees Class of 2013.

Paulette Gillert: Paulette is a former University of Wesmen and University of Manitoba Bison athlete. During her three seasons with the Wesmen and subsequent two seasons with the Bisons Paulette won the CIS (formerly CIAU) National Women’s Volleyball Championship four times and was named CWUAA (formerly GPAC) rookie of the year in her first season with the Wesmen. She is also an alumna of the Canadian Women’s Senior National Volleyball team where she competed throughout the world in international competition.

Phil Hudson: As an MHSAA coach, Phil has led his teams to six separate AAAA Provincial Volleyball Championship titles, twice with West Kildonan and four times with his Dakota Lancers. In addition to his accomplishments at the high school level Phil has coached multiple provincial teams and has been quite successful there as well, earning a gold medal at the 2005 men’s Canada Games and silver at the Canada Games in 1985. Phil has also coached multiple club teams to national medals and championships and he is currently a member of the coaching staff for the Canadian Jr. Women’s National team.

Jon Hykawy: Jon has coached across various levels including high school, club, university, and at the international level. He’s led his teams to three High School Championships and six separate club national championships. While assistant coaching with the University of Manitoba Bison’s Jon became the first coach to win a CIS National Championship with both a men’s and women’s program in the same year. Jon worked with the Women's National team from 1992-95 during which time the team captured bronze at the NORCECA Championships.

Tammy Mahon: As a member of the Canadian women’s national team form 2001-2012 and team captain from 2008-2012, Tammy led team Canada to various Olympic qualification tournaments, world championships, Pan Am Games, and NORCECA tournaments. In addition to her career at the international level Tammy also has a storied professional career overseas where she’s played for various teams from Sweden, the Netherlands, Romania, Azerbaijan, Greece, Germany, and Indoneisa. In 2011 Tammy was named MVP of the finals while her Panathinaikos team from Greece was crowned league champions.

Brian Plett: Since 1982 Brian has been the coach of the storied varsity boys volleyball program at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute (MBCI). In addition to coaching at the high school level Brian has developed the Hawks Volleyball Club (Tier 2) program at MBCI which has been developing teams from grade six all the way to grade eleven since the mid-1990s. Brian and his MBCI Hawks are six time MHSAA AAAA Boys Provincial Champions, having won in 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2009, and just last season in 2012.

Vincent Massey Collegiate Varsity Girls Volleyball Team 1963-1965: This dynasty dominated women’s high school volleyball in Manitoba winning three consecutive provincial championships in ’63, ’64, and ’65 the first of which was the inaugural Manitoba Provincial High School Volleyball Championship. In their final year as a high school team the Vincent Massey Girls decided to compete in the Canadian Senior National Championships in Vancouver where they shocked the competition by winning the bronze medal.
