“We will provide our guests with the highest quality and entertainment experience in a safe, clean and friendly environment.”

A LEGEND COMES TO TOWN By: Richard Goldfarb “Success without honor is like an unseasoned dish; it will satisfy your hunger, but it won't taste good”

In 1950 the football landscape was not dominated by the Pros but by the colleges. One of the most powerful conferences in col- lege was the . Several great NFL players came out of these institutions, Among them Chuck Bednairik, Sid Luckman and Dan Fortmann to name a few. One player from Brown University who never had a chance at the Pros was , Joseph Paterno. Off went the plans for Law School and Joe decided to give coaching a try. Upon arriving at Penn State, Joe told Rip Engle that he didn’t know anything about coaching. Rip handed him a stack of film and said, “Learn.” Since 1966 Joe has been one of the most admired figures in ; an acknowledged icon whose in- fluence extends well beyond the football field. Joe is about doing things the right way, by making sure that when players graduate and leave his program they are ready for the real world. Some of Joe’s notable achievements: -24 Bowl Victories -78 first-team All-Americans -402 Victories -32 First Round NFL draft picks -More than 350 players to the NFL.

What has made Joe stand out are over 60 Academic All Americans who have been thru his program and the extraordinary high graduation rate of close to 75%, while a lot of other football programs have been lucky to graduate 50% of their players. Perhaps the biggest honor in Joe’s life more than 2 National championship and 5 undefeated sea- sons was when the school put his name on the University Library. Soon to be 85 despite what say Joe has no plans to retire. When asked about his contract Joe will often say, “I haven’t had a contract for 62 years.” When he spurned Law School for coaching his dad said “whatever you do, have an impact”. We can all agree to that!

HISTORY LESSON By: Charlie Jones If you are a recent fan of the Eagles, it wasn’t always conference titles, playoffs and glory. For fans of a certain age, the mid to late 1960’s were barren A GO GREEN! UPDATE times. The Birds had won the NFL title in 1960, and from that lofty perch they had two ways to go – the hard way and stay in contention for years to come, or the easy Tons & Tons of Recycling way and slide downhill to mediocrity. They took the easy path. The coach for most As this issue went to press, in 2011 Aramark of those down-trodden teams was . Joe had played his college ball at Facility Services and LFF have… Notre Dame and had returned to coach there in the early 60’s.

The Eagles owner plucked Joe from the college ranks with the hope of turning around the franchise. It worked for a while but by 1968 the team slipped to 2-12 and shouts of JOE MUST GO rang across the chilly confines of . In fact RECYCLED 177.35 tons of trash one Eagles supporter hired a plane to tow a banner expressing those sentiments COMPOSTED 144.71 tons of food waste above the . My ears still ring from my first Eagles game in 1968 – JOE MUST GO…JOE MUST GO. Let’s hope we don’t hear that anytime soon around these parts. RECYCLED 70.16 tons of cardboard Congratulations to the Aramark Game Eerie coincidence - Joe Kuharich died on January 25, 1981 – the same day the Eagles Day Staff ! played in XV.
