Spare a thought this week for the kitchen table lawyers – those in junior roles who have been forced to fight for space in flatshares and turn their kitchens into home/ work/ eating/ gaming spaces. There is no doubt that lockdown has been a vastly different experience depending on factors such as your access to a home office (or indeed, to a garden, paddling pool or barbecue…). But it has also exposed a faultline between senior and junior lawyers, who in most cases have fared differently because of the space constraints suffered by many at the start of their career and the sudden lack of face-to- face support and monitoring from senior members of a team. Those with young families are also under strain. And junior lawyers also have to contend with the stresses of delayed exams, or traineeships, making this an even more difficult period. I want to know how you think this issue can be eased? Are you a junior lawyer who has hated working remotely? Are you working from home with a young family and pulling your hair out? Or is loneliness the more pernicious threat, which can happen to anyone, at any stage.
