OUR FIRST UNISEX PRESIDENT?: BLACK MASCULINITY AND OBAMA'S FEMININE SIDE FRANK RUDY COOPERt ABSTRACT People often talk about the significance of Barack Obama's status as our first black President. During the 2008 Presidential campaign, however, a newspaper columnist declared, "If Bill Clinton was once con- sidered America's first black president, Obama may one day be viewed as our first woman president." That statement epitomized a large media discourse on Obama's femininity. In this essay, I thus ask how Obama will influence people's understandings of the implications of both race and gender. To do so, I explicate and apply insights from the fields of identity performance theory, critical race theory, and masculinities studies. With respect to race, the essay confirms my prior theory of "bipolar black masculinity." That is, the media tends to represent black men as either the completely threatening and race-affirming Bad Black Man or the completely comforting and assimilationist Good Black Man. -

With the historic election of the first black president of the United States, Barack Obama, and the candidacy of the first Republican woman nominated for vice-president, Sarah Palin, the 2008 presidential and vice-presidential campaigns remain important for study. “Political Campaigning 2.0” analyzes campaign and user-generated web content covering a wide array of new media: Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Wikipedia, Twitter, and campaign websites. The study is based on Erving Goffman’s theories of Framing and Impression Management and complemented with James Grunig’s Situational Theory of Publics. -

Great forests of white pine with many trees 200 years old or over covered much of our state when the first white men arrived. Practically all the white pine cut today comes from second growth. Eastern white pine reproduces readily. If only a few trees are left in harvest cuttings and fire is kept away, young trees gradually take place of those removed. The wood is light, soft, very easily worked and durable. The heartwood is light brown, often tinged with red. The sap- wood , which may be narrow or medium wide, is yellowish white. The bark on young white pine stems is smooth and greenish. -

WRIGHT A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy and Technology Studies in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2018 Copyright John Mark Coleman 2018 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT As Twitter became a popular platform for social networking, educators began to utilize the platform for professional networking. Educators began to utilize the hashtag #edchat to denote their ongoing and growing conversations on education subjects. Educational institutions began to require teachers to participate in the platform or granted continuing education credits for their participation. To determine if such sanction is merited, a qualitative exploration of the network of educators on the Twitter platform was performed. Three primary theories were used as a lens for exploration of the community. The first was social capital, where benefits are accrued by social interactions. Mark Granovetter’s strength of weak ties, where a community becomes linked by tangential relations of its members was the second lens for exploration. Finally, Etienne Wenger’s concept of the Community of Practice, where a body of collective knowledge and best practices emerge from a community gathered around a specific topic, was used to explore the network. Posts to Twitter containing the #edchat hashtag were collected and a survey instrument was disseminated with the #edchat hashtag. Collected posts and their linked content were coded according to their content.
