Dear friends,

There are parallels with the recent work of our Prime Minister in fighting to stay in Europe with Britain’s unique requests and our Archbishop Justin working to keep the world wide Anglican church together as the debate over who and who should not be allowed to be married in church continues.

Who would be in their shoes trying to uphold differences of opinion and expecta- tions yet keep people together for the benefit of the common good? I imagine you have strong views on both debates – but regardless of what they are – I think we can all acknowledge that decision making is sometimes easy and sometimes al- most impossible!

It’s Lent so we are reminded of Jesus having to make decisions of how to carry out his life’s work with temptations in his way. In 1 Corinthians chapter 6: vses8,9 we read – “Everything is allowable for me, but not everything is valuable. All things are permissible, but I will not allow anyone to dictate to me. Watch out though, in case exercising your freedom should put a stumbling block in the way of the weak.”

How many times do we hear the question, “Was it a goal or wasn’t it?” That’s the question many a football match has pondered over. Even with the help of slow mo- tion film it’s always down to the referee to be the decision maker.

There are moments in life when we are faced with the need to decide even when the right choice is far from clear. And so it was for St Paul and those people in Cor- inth who asked whether they should eat meat that had been dedicated to the local gods or idols. Paul’s answer essentially was, that it depends on the circumstances – what’s right in one situation may be wrong in another. Occasionally issues may be clear-cut but there are times when it’s unwise to be dogmatic. In all manner of ways in our daily life we may prefer to live with what we think should be moral and ethical certainties, but that is not always the way of Christ. Jesus once said ‘give to Ceasar the things that are his and to God the things that are God’s’.

I pray this Lent gives us time to reflect on how we make decisions and how we ap- proach our attitudes to life so we can give glory to God.

Budget 2016/17 – the main part of this month’s meeting was spent discussing the budget for next year. It is clear that the Borough Council is under severe financial pressure and that if the Parish Council is to maintain its current commitments and fund any new work it would have to substantially increase the precept. After much discussion, it was therefore decided to increase the parish precept by 25%, which would result in an average increase of Council Tax of approximately £3.30 per year for each household (depending on the property band).

It was also decided that the Parish Council would develop a 3-5 year plan to be presented to the Annual Parish Meeting in May.

Recycling – the Borough Council had expressed concern that a lot of contaminated waste such as pizza boxes, dirty food containers etc., was being put into recycling bins which meant the whole load has to go to land fill rather than being recycled. It was hoped that more care could be taken to follow the guidelines when disposing of refuse.

Glass on the Green – Councillors again raised their concern about the dangers of broken glass on the Green when drinks from the pubs are taken outside. The Parish Council was to request publicans to provide plastic containers when drinks are to be consumed outside the pubs.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Monday 29th February in the School. …………………………….. Lost in translation Are you travelling this Easter? Keep an eye out for those delightful translations into Eng- lish that didn’t quite make it…

Church Path

I would like to publicly acknowledge the thanks due to the Elwick Parish Council and a local benefactor, who together have replaced the steps leading to St Peters Church. These along with the more substantial handrail have made the church and indeed open spaces beyond more safely accessible to all of us.

Once again it demonstrates the benefits of us all working together in order to continue to improve access around our village not only for ourselves but also for the many visitors to our village. Well Done Everyone, Brian Footitt

EASTER – the most joyful day of the year

Easter is the most joyful day of the year for Christians. Christ has died for our sins. We are forgiven. Christ has risen! We are redeemed! We can look forward to an eternity in his joy! Hallelujah!

The Good News of Jesus Christ is a message so simple that you can explain it to someone in a few minutes. It is so profound that for the rest of their lives they will be still be ‘growing’ in their Christian walk with God.

Why does the date more around so much? Because the date of Passover moves around, and according to the biblical account, Easter is tied to the Passover. Passover celebrates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and it lasts for seven days, from the middle of the Hebrew month of Nisan, which equates to late March or early April.

Sir Isaac Newton was one of the first to use the Hebrew lunar calendar to come up with firm dates for Good Friday: Friday 7 April 30 AD or Friday 3 April, 33 AD, with Easter Day falling two days later. Modern scholars continue to think these the most likely.

Most people will tell you that Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, which is broadly true. But the precise calculations are complicated and involve something called an ‘ecclesiastical full moon’, which is not the same as the moon in the sky. The earliest possible date for Easter in the West is 22 March, which last fell in 1818 and won’t fall again until 2285. The lat- est is 25 April, which last happened in 1943 and is next due in 2038.

Why the name, ‘Easter’? In almost every European language, the festival’s name comes from ‘Pesach’, the Hebrew word for Passover. The Germanic word ‘Easter’, however, seems to come from Eostre, a Saxon fertility goddess mentioned by the Venerable Bede. He thought that the Saxons worshipped her in ‘Eostur month’, but may have confused her with the classical dawn goddesses like Eos and Aurora, whose names mean ‘shining in the east’. So Easter might have meant simply ‘beginning month’ – a good time for starting up again after a long winter.

Finally, why Easter eggs? On one hand, they are an ancient symbol of birth in most European cultures. On the other hand, hens start laying regularly again each Spring. Since eggs were forbidden during Lent, it’s easy to see how decorating and eating them became a practical way to celebrate Easter.

Police Police are appealing for information after a -29 year-old man was threatened at knife point in an attempted robbery in a layby on the A179, near to the A19 in the Hartlepool area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday 17th February at around 2.15pm when the victim pulled into the layby to take a phone call and noticed a man who appeared to be looking for help.

The male approached the victim’s car and spoke to him in broken English and asked him for petrol.

As the victim reached for his wallet, the male pulled a knife out of his pocket and attempted to steal the wallet.

The victim managed to accelerate away. He was uninjured, but was shaken up.

The suspect is described as of Eastern European appearance with a bald, shaven head, stub- ble beard, aged around 40-years-old and around 5 ft 7” tall. He was wearing a navy blue tracksuit and he was stood near to a dark blue Vauxhall Zafira which possibly had a 52 regis- tration plate.

Police would like any witnesses or anyone with information regarding the vehicle or the iden- tity of the suspect to contact PC Peter Doherty on the non-emergency number 101, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

This morning 19th Febuary, police received a report that a car had been stolen from a driveway in Eaglescliffe after it had been left with the engine running to de-ice at around 7.55am on Burn- moor Drive.

The owner had left the blue Seat Leon unattended for only a couple of minutes and when they returned it had gone.

Two vehicles were stolen in the same circumstances in January in Stockton and Middlesbrough, also having been left unattended with the engines running to de-ice.

Detective Inspector Glen Westmoreland, from Stockton Volume Crime Team, said: “We see this happening time and time again when the weather gets cold.

“Some people probably think that this won’t happen to them, but my message to those people is that it could happen to anyone.

“With more icy weather on the way, please remember that it only takes seconds for an opportun- ist thief to see their chance and take it. Do not leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running.”

St. Peter’s Elwick CofE What have we been learning in Year 3 and Year 4

Last half term in the Year 3 and Year 4 class we learned a lot about predators and their prey and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit from Zoo Lab. Zoo lab are a company who own many different animals from around the world and they came into our class to show us many of their animals such as: snakes, giant Afri- can snails, a Tarantula, a Madagascan cockroach and two pet rats (do not worry, no animals were hurt during our fantastic visit.) We looked at food webs and food chains and learned that every food chain has a producer at the beginning and in all cases the sun begins the food chain because it gives energy to the pro- ducer. Following this there is a primary consumer, a secondary consumer and a tertiary consumer. The tertiary consumer is at the head/top of all food webs/ chains.

We also had lots of fun writing our own narrative stories and non-chronological reports based on a predator of our choice. In our narratives we used a mythical predator that we had created using elements from the predators we had learned about and the Storm Unicorn. This was the focus of our non-chronological re- port. If you would like to see us in action, orally rehearsing the Storm Unicorn, please take a look at our school website. The video is on year 3 and 4 Elwick’s page.

HART LADIES FELLOWSHIP

Our February meeting took place at the home of Gordon and Margaret Barr. The meet- ing opened with prayer. We remembered Joan Wall who could not be with us and an ex-member Margaret Clark.

A collection was taken for the Tear Fund, one of the charities we support. Donations were also taken towards the cost of a kneeler to commemorate the forthcoming 90th birthday of the Queen.

We discussed the possibility of a joint meeting with Elwick Ladies Fellowship in April.

Our speaker Anne Johnson was welcomed. She gave us details of the men from the Hart area who lost their lives in World War II and who are commemorated in the memo- rial window of our Church. Sheila McDonald thanked Anne for her informative talk.

Margaret then served tea and refreshments and we enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with news. Mary Scott thanked Margaret for her warm welcome.

The meeting closed with the Grace.

Next meeting: 9th March at the home of Shirley Brown.

Report for February 2016

Two applications for the vacancy of Parish Councillor have been re- ceived, and will be left on the table for the March meeting as there was a shortage of councillors due to work and sickness at this month’s meeting. We have ordered another 20 ton load of planings to cover the car park and these should be made available shortly. Over the years one would expect the level of the ground to have risen greatly, so where do the many 20 ton loads vanish to? I know there are witches buried just the other side of the wall – spine-chilling. With the Queen’s 90th birthday coming up we were advised at the parish liaison meeting that the usual street party arrangements apply on marches or walking in support of an event. The Hart events team are aware of this. Ward councillor Paul Beck is taking to the Highways Officer our despair at the state of Worset Lane and the footpaths leading to The Fens, and Nine Acres. The entrance to the Raby Arms site has brought criticism being far too narrow. Even the Lorries delivering ma- terial are in difficulty. The plans for this are being looked at. Amidst the plethora of planning applications we once more find no indication that devel- opers are prepared to improve the infrastructure prior to building yet more unwelcome housing in Hartlepool. From a parish liaison meeting we are advised that the expected con- struction of a safe access to Elwick is in abeyance as the fatal accident rate has not been met. HBC have been asked if volunteers are to be called for! We understood that it was the intention to build a northern bypass around Elwick coupled to a safely designed junction and fly-over. This, from our point of view, would avoid the need for use to be made of Worset and Naisberry Lanes to access the A19 north via the A179 which as we know is se- riously overloaded.

The events committee wish to hold a one off car boot sale to raise funds for their pro- gramme. No date has been fixed as yet but it would probably be in the village field, using the car park for visitors. It will need to wait until the area has dried out somewhat.
