Unlike last month, when the collection of Martine Saunier demanded all the headlines, in this sale no single collection dominates. But there are so many featured wines! This catalog is deep with the greatest wines and names of France, Europe and California, and we hope that you are able to join us in person on March 28th at Marea. There are so many rare wines in Lots 251-290. This might be my favorite collection of the whole sale thanks to a longstanding collector who built his collection over decades. Beautiful bottles of 1949 Haut Brion, 1959 Latour, 1975 La Mission, an OWC of 1982 Mouton, six Petrus vintages, gorgeous bottles of 1962 Vogue Musigny, many DRC lots including famed 1978 and 1985, the great 1978 La Chapelle, and so much more, that it is impossible to choose a favorite. This is the stop, look, listen and buy collection of the sale! Don’t miss Lots 398-468 if you collect and drink Rousseau, Dujac, Denis Bachelet, Roumier, Coche Dury, Henri Jayer, Drouhin, Hommage from Beaucastel, Clos St. Jean, Chave, Barroche, Masseto or Colgin. Every lot in this collection is in superb condition from a temperature and humidity-controlled cellar, and it personifies that our NYC auctions offer collectors and drinkers the chance to buy a little bit of everything… everything great! There is no greater DRC vintage than 1999 and the collection in Lots 468-498 offers a custom OWC of the 1999 DRC Assortment, 2003 DRC magnums and bottles, three Coche-Dury lots, 2005 Clos de Tart in OWC, Vega Sicilia, Giacosa and a most impressive collection of OWC Harlan Estate. This collection is a world tour of great names. Petrus, Henri Jayer, Leroy and DRC. Yeah, sounds good! Lots 383-397 comes to us from one of the more knowledgeable collectors in the USA. Super-rare verticals of Lafite and Petrus set the stage for a bevy of Burgundy, none brighter than a vertical of Henri Jayer Echezeaux collection back to 1978. If that’s not enough, try three twelve bottle case lots of 1989 and 1990 Leroy, a six bottle lot of 1990 Leroy Richebourg, plus a very rare and pristine magnum of 1988 Coche Dury Meursault Perrieres. And that is far from all – two Methuselahs (!) of DRC, for example. I love this collection, and you will, too. 4 ACKER MERRALL & CONDIT CO., 160 WEST 72ND STREET, NEW YORK, NY 10023 • FAX: 877.ACKER.24 • PHONE: 877.ACKER.47 There are two of our Featured Collections that are bigger than the rest, Lots 1-112 and Lots 655- 732. 108 FRANCE THE LIBOURNAIS AND FRONSADAIS The right bank of the Dordogne River, known as THE GARAGISTE EFFECT the Libournais district, is red-wine country. In 1979, Jacques Thienpont, owner of Pomerol’s classy Vieux Château Certan, unintentionally created what would become the Dominated by the Merlot grape, the vineyards “vin de garagiste” craze, when he purchased a neighboring plot here produce deep-colored, silky- or velvety-rich of land and created a new wine called Le Pin. With a very low yield, 100 percent Merlot, and 100 percent new oak, the wines of classic quality in the St.-Émilion and decadently rich Le Pin directly challenged Pétrus, less than a mile Pomerol regions, in addition to wines of modest away. It was widely known that Thienpont considered Vieux Château Certan to be at least the equal of Pétrus, and he could quality, but excellent value and character, in the certainly claim it to be historically more famous, but Pétrus “satellite” appellations that surround them. regularly got much the higher price, which dented his pride. So Le Pin was born, and although he did not offer his fledgling wine at the same price as Pétrus, it soon trounced it on the auction IN THE MID-1950S, many Libournais wines were harsh, and market. • ISLINGTON U3A WINE APPRECIATION GROUP January 2020
ISLINGTON U3A WINE APPRECIATION GROUP January 2020 NOTES ON MERLOT WINES Merlot is a dark blue-colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, Merlot is one of the primary grapes used in Bordeaux wine, and it is the most widely planted grape in the Bordeaux wine regions. Merlot is also one of the most popular red wine varietals in many markets. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the world's most planted grape varieties. As of 2004, Merlot was estimated to be the third most grown variety at 260,000 hectares (640,000 acres) globally. The area planted to Merlot has continued to increase, with 266,000 hectares (660,000 acres) in 2015. While Merlot wine is made across the globe, there tends to be two main styles. The "International style" favored by many New World wine regions tends to emphasize late harvesting to gain physiological ripeness and produce inky, purple colored wines that are full in body with high alcohol and lush, velvety tannins with intense, plum and blackberry fruit. While this international style is practiced by many Bordeaux wine producers, the traditional "Bordeaux style" of Merlot involves harvesting Merlot earlier to maintain acidity and producing more medium-bodied wines with moderate alcohol levels that have fresh, red fruit flavors (raspberries, strawberries) and potentially leafy, vegetal notes.

Alison suggested that we could make a collage of wine-bottle labels I’d acquired some years previously to illustrate a book about printing techniques. This seemed very sensible, so we put forty assorted labels in a large frame: the result looked good, so we hung it on the wall.
