Pre-basic seed crops are eligible for inspection if they are planted with potatoes that were classified or had an inspection report issued the previous year as Pre-basic 1, 2 or 3 or Pre-basic TC (Mini Tubers) that were obtained from propagation units that have been approved by SASA. All initial planting material in these units must have been derived from nuclear stock (pathogen tested microplants) produced by SASA. Pre-basic crops must be grown on land on which potatoes have not been grown in the preceding 7 years and is free from wart disease and potato cyst nematode.

This collection relates mainly to the estate of Craigo with the associated lands of Dysart, Logie, and Ardoch which lie on the south bank of the North Esk near Montrose. The title deeds go back to the late fifteenth century, and in addition to the usual progression from that period, include an interesting series of deeds relating to the Temple lands of Ardoch, and another relating to property in the burgh of Montrose, one deed from which is a papal bull hitherto known only from a copy. There is also a series of deeds relating to the lands of Faichfield and Cocklaw in Aberdeenshire from 1740. Estate papers include a good run of rentals and accounts, virtually complete from 1705 to 1780 (81-9), and a small group of estate workers’ account, 1770-81 (84). There is comparatively little correspondence, but there are two small collections of letters and other papers, one of George Dempster of Dunnichen, a minor figure of the Scottish Englightenment (93), and the other of George Arbuthnot, Auditor of the Exchequer in Scotland, who managed the finances of the 2nd Earl of Stair during his embassy to France, 1715-20 (92). The Nicolson papers (105-23), which came to the Carnegie family through the marriage of Elizabeth, daughter of James Carnegie of Craigo, to Sir James Nicolson, 7th Bart., of Lasswade, include a run of title deeds for lands in St Leonards and the Pleasance in Edinburgh, but their main interest lies in the small section relating to the building of a house in Nicolson Street in 1766 (122).

Mudie, M.B.E., R.N. 1959 ii MUDIES OF ANGUS PREFACE MUDIE is one of the oldest of Lowland Scots names. In the thirteenth century, and probably earlier, it was spelt Modi and has been spelt in a great many ways since. Now there are, practically speaking, only two spellings, Mudie and Moodie. With only one exception that we have been able to find, all families of Angus origin use the former spelling and, again with only one exception, all those whose origin is outside Angus use the latter. Mudie is the older spelling, originating about the beginning of the sixteenth century. Moodie started to become common in the eighteenth and its adoption would appear to be the result of the increased contact with England which followed the Union of 1707. Nothing definite is known of the origin of the Mudies. Traditionally they are of Norse descent and this receives some confirmation from the fact that in early times they are found, almost exclusively, in those parts of Scotland raided by the Norsemen: in Angus along the coast from Dundee to Montrose: in Fife on the Forth near Dunfermline; on the Firth of Clyde below Glasgow and on the shores of the Pentland Firth. In Angus the Mudies early spread from the Sidlaw Hills, which seems to have been their original home, to the towns of Dundee, Arbroath, Montrose, in which many of them attained considerable prominence in public life in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
