Glenorchy Gazett e February 2019 3 Community News CBD revitalisation takes shape THE Glenorchy CBD Revitalisation Project is continuing to take shape with stage three offi cially launched late last month. The launch event saw guests entertained by the Glenorchy City Concert Brass before receiving essential information and updates on the project by Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston and Local Member for Clark Elise Archer. Mayor Johnston said it was “delightful” to watch community mem- bers and businesses come together to celebrate the launch of the new CBD, one that would embody a welcoming city. “Our upgraded CBD will celebrate Glenorchy’s image and pride, as well as provide a great environment for people during both day and night activities,” she said. “It will encourage people to enjoy our arts, heritage and public spac- es, increasing accessibility, safety and exploration of our CBD.” The highlight of the launch was the opportu- nity for the community to communicate with the Glenorchy CBD Project Reference Group. The Project Reference Group is made up of individuals from business- es, emergency services, transport organisations, and education providers. It has and will contin- ue to work closely with the City of Glenorchy’s CBD Project team to provide advice, support, and information while the planning and delivery of the project takes place. COUNCIL DECISIONS: DECISIONS FROM THE COUNCIL MEETING ON 17 DECEMBER 2018 INCLUDED: CHANGES TO JACKSON STREET LANDFILL FEES Council adopted changes to its landfill operations fees and charges for the Jackson Street landfill. The fee is necessary to encourage better separation of waste categories and the diversion of waste away from Jackson Street, as the landfill approaches the end of its usable life. This has been achieved by increasing the fees for commercial users, diverting Council waste to the Copping landfill, and reducing commercial waste by providing incentives to commercial operators to separate mixed waste. The fees for non-commercial users have not changed.

THE Claremont Petan- que Club is on a roll after celebrating its Inauguration Day at Claremont’s Cadbury Sports Grounds recently. A boules-style sport de- veloped in France in the late 1800s, petanque is played in 65 countries around the world and is increasingly popular in Tasmania. With the Bayside Boules Petanque Club’s facilities in Sandy Bay overrun with keen players, Ron Jones and friends decided to take petanque to Hobart’s north- ern suburbs. “That terrain is shared by several clubs and social groups so it was becoming quite congested, being used seven days a week,” Mr Jones said. “We were looking to expand the popularity of petanque further out into the suburbs so we ap- proached the Glenorchy City Council and asked if they had any suitable locations.” They found one at the Cadbury Sports Grounds, turning space behind the tennis court into a new petanque surface, known as a piste. People have been playing there regularly since 2015, but the Claremont Petanque Club only became offi cially incorporated late last year.
