The son of a modest family, he started his artistic education at the Ecole des BeauxArts in Angers, before moving to Paris where he studied in the Studio of the portraitist Leon Bonnat at the Beaux-Arts Academy. He began to exhibit regularly at the annual art society exhibitions and at the Paris Salon. Meanwhile, he assisted the artist Ferdinand Humbert with the decorative murals at the Pantheon for 6 years. Very soon he decided to give up his studies and befriended the artists Paul Signac, Bonnard and Vuillard, cofounders of the Nabis group and the " Intimists " group, who favoured the quietness and lightness of domestic subject matters, and from whom he would learn the significance of a colour theory which stressed the use of complementary colours in shading. He also met Camille Pissaro, in 1902, and Renoir. Both would have a large influence on his work. Travelling abroad, he went to London where he discovered the work of Turner. A friend of Matisse, Manguin and Rouault, he did not share their style, violent colours and strong brushstoke, but stayed closer to the subtlety of Impressionism until 1905. In 1906, the discovery, (thanks to his friend Manguin), of the South of France and its very specific light would lead him to a drastic change of style. -
The Turn of a Great Century
cover:Layout 1 8/27/09 9:34 PM Page 1 Guarisco Gallery The Turn of a Great Century 19th and Early 20th Century Paintings, Sculptures & Watercolors 1 WHY 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURIES (The Optimal Period for Collecting) T he turn of the 19th century into the 20th has always proven to be one of the most interesting eras in art history. It is the century that witnessed the greatest expression of the Academic tradition and it is the era that launched modernism through the developments of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. * * * * * * * * * * * * Academic: Realism. It is best defined as an artist’s mastery of a variety of painting techniques, including the depiction of atmosphere and natural light, intended to produce a picture that mimicked reality. This style reached its height in the latter part of the 19th century. Major artists of this period include: William Bouguereau, Jean-Léon Gérome, Alexandre Cabanel, Briton Riviere, and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Modern: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism; the commencement of modern painting. This period is the beginning of experimentation with form, color, brushwork, and subject matter leading to modern art. These artists experimented with depicting the effects of light and using expressive color and brushwork to portray both figures and landscapes. Founding members include: Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Albert Guillaumin—and their contemporaries—Edmond Petitjean, Henri Lebasque, Henri Martin, and Georges d’Espagnat. These artitsts produced works which continue to be most favored for their market value and aesthetic merit. 2 (at The Ritz-Carlton) Welcome to Guarisco Gallery Guarisco Gallery is a leading international gallery founded in 1980 specializing in museum quality 19th - and early 20th - century paintings and sculpture. -

Guarisco Gallery Claude-Emile Schuffenecker French, 1851-1934 Le Square (au Luxembourg), 1885 43’’ x 49 ½’’ fr., o/c 1 Guarisco Gallery has recently opened a 2nd Location at Ritz Carlton, DC NEW at Four Seasons, Georgetown 1120 22nd St., NW | Washington, DC 20037 2828 Pennsylvania Ave., NW | Washington, DC 20037 202-333-8533 202-847-3098 Monday - Sunday Monday - Sunday www.guariscogallery.com 2 ARMAND GUILLAUMIN, one of the founding members of the Impressionists, was the most loyal to the tenets of the movement–a bright palette, vigorous brushwork, contemporary subject, and en plein air painting. Guillaumin has recently been “rediscovered” and acknowledged for his importance within the Impressionist movement and as a major influence on Post-Impressionists including van Gogh, Paul Signac, and Henri Matisse. Here, Guillaumin creates an intimate portrait of his wife in pastel. The use of pastel was popular in the 17th century, but was re- introduced by the Impressionists in the 19th century, most notably by Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Henri Toulouse Lautrec. Armand Guillaumin La Femme de l’artiste French, 1841-1927 23’’ x 20’’ fr. Signed L.R., Pastel 3 44 Pointillism The Post-Impressionist period was a hothouse of varied artistic philosophies, including Pointillism, Symbolism, and Fauvism. Branching from Impressionism, Seurat and Signac developed this technique in 1886. Pointillism, also known as divisionism, is a mode of painting in which small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns to form an image. Unlike the academic artists who blended colors on the palette before applying paint to canvas, this new modern movement relied on the ability of the eye and mind of the viewer to blend color spots into clearer and more defined forms. -
