The changes arising from 3d printing includes more than just new options for product design, but also shifts in the manufacturing eco-system and choices for restructuring competitive dynamics. We review many existing cases and developed a taxonomy capable of capturing the many areas of impact. The taxonomy draws on Pavitt’s identification of industry types, combined with Castellacci’s more recent service- manufacturing sectors which includes external sources and more open business models.
