Most of the attacks were carried out in Colombo, the capital, where there were attacks on a church and three luxury hotels. Two churches were attacked in Negombo, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Colombo; and in Batticaloa, 218 (135 miles) kilometers northeast of Colombo. An additional suicide bombing attack, which was supposed to have been carried out that morning in a hotel in Colombo, failed because of a technical error, but was carried out in the afternoon in a different hotel. In addition, three policemen were killed when they conducted a search of an estate in Colombo which belonged to one of the terrorists, the son of a rich spice merchant.
