Biosphere Reserve and Business Innovation Zones How and when we started to discuss for the MaB Reserve • 2015. By the time we were in the procedure to design our new strategy Parnonas had the great chance to meet Mr. Scoulos and the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO ESCDE)

In Parnonas review road trip in 2015 we had the chance to hear and discuss from our colleague Mr Papas, about the potential to be a MaB reserve area according to the characteristics that can serve those obligations. Network of protected areas with unique and important international natural, cultural and scientific features and values, consisting of land, marine and coastal ecosystems. Discussion and consultation • Ecological Park of Open Forum Mount Parnonas & Moustos wetland (1,15 million acres) • At least 5 regions of the network NATURA 2000, of total area (600 thousand acres) • 113 rare plant species such as Cedrus (Juniperus drupacea ), of which 69 are endemic of the Peloponnese, 16 are local endemics such as Viola parnonia , rare species of fauna such as the jackal ( Canis aureus ) • Landscapes of unique natural beauty The representatives of local authorities dedicate the local strategy to improve the value of the biosphere reserve Our Mayors • In North Kinouria Mr Lysikatos • In South Kinouria Mr Mantas • In Mr Valiotis • In Mr Triheilis • In Mr Berdos The President of the LAG Mr Floros, and the General Director of Parnonas SA Mr Beretsos. So, in 2016 and after all this findings, 12 Mayors and their Councils dedicate the idea to improve the MaB Reserve as the great value in Parnonas – Maleas area Finally our new program till 2020 has the strategy for MaB Reserve values and the way local communities adopt and support them! Why Parnonas – Maleas is a MaB MaB Program: • Intergovernmental program inaugurated in the early 1970s aiming to improve the relationship between man and the environment • Areas where man and nature are in perfect coexistence through the preservation of natural wealth and human civilization

The term “Biosphere Reserve” regarding the area, is supported by the combination of agricultural areas and fisheries, with areas of particular cultural interest and environmental protection (NATURA 2000 areas) and the presence of preservable and traditional settlements. Includes the above areas and follows the administrative division of 6 municipalities: North Kynouria, South Kynouria, Monemvasia, Sparta, and the island of The Core zones of the proposed Biosphere Reserve have been defined to include all the individual statutory protected zones under the Biodiversity Law 3937/2011. Specifically, the core areas of the Mount Parnon and Biosphere Reserve include: A. Two (2) Strict Nature Reserves: Juniperus drupaceae forest in Malevi Monastery and Moustos Wetland

Likewise, the Buffer zones of the Mount Parnon and Cape Maleas Biosphere Reserve have been defined according to the statutory limits of NATURA 2000 sites. Thus, the buffer zones of the proposed Biosphere Reserve include six (6) Special Protection Areas – SPA (Directives 79/409/EU and 2009/147/EU), two (2) Special Area of Conservation – SAC (Directive 92/43/ ΕΚ ): Mounts Gidovouni, Chionovouni, Gaidourovouni, Korakia, Kalogerovouni, Koulochera and area of Monemvasia (SPA - GR2540001) Neapolis area and Elafonisos Island (SPA - GR2540002) Evrotas Estuary (SPA - GR2540003) Monastery of Elona and the Leonidio Gorge (SPA - GR2520005) Mount Parnon summits and area of Malevi monastery (SPA - GR2520006) Moustos lagoon (SPA - GR2520003) Mounts of Eastern (SAC - GR2540007) Evrotas Estuary Wetlands (SAC - GR2540006) Buffer zones In buffer zones of the proposed Biosphere Reserve were included four more sites – terrestrial and marine areas, which have been proposed to be included in the NATURA 2000 Network, based on "Surveillance and assessment of the conservation status of species and habitat types in Greece" project, results. These buffer zones are the: • Terrestrial area in the region Poulithra – Arkadia (SPA proposed site) • Terrestrial area in the region Platori – Laconia (SPA proposed site) • Marine area in the region of Monemvasia, Gulf of Epidaurus - Limeras (SCA proposed site) • Marine area in Evrotas Estuary, (SCA proposed site) Transition zones

The transition zone was defined as the area enclosing the core and the buffer zones and follows the administrative division of the Municipalities of North Kynouria , South Kynouria, Monemvasia, Elafonissos, Sparta and Evrotas. You are going to visit: Kastanitsa Μονή Έλωνας
