Return from Exile: How Extreme Metal Culture Found Its Niche with Dethklok and Postnetwork TV
Journal of Popular Music Studies, Volume 27, Issue 2, Pages 163–183 Return from Exile: How Extreme Metal Culture Found Its Niche with Dethklok and Postnetwork TV Joe Tompkins Allegheny College In the premiere episode of Metalocalypse, an original animated series entering its fifth season on the Adult Swim channel,1 300, 000 metalheads travel to the Artic Circle to witness Dethklok, “the world’s greatest cultural force,” as they perform a coffee jingle for the Duncan Hills Coffee Corporation. Despite adverse conditions and a mere single song set list, thousands of fans risk life and limb for the chance to witness the legendary death metal band as they perform a raucous musical ode to the virtues of “ultimate flavor.” As one reporter on the scene observes, “Never before have so many people traveled so far for such a short song.” In a further testament to the band’s outstanding popularity and market value, concertgoers eagerly sign “pain waivers” excusing Dethklok from legal liability in the all too likely event they are somehow “burned, lacerated, eaten alive, poisoned, de-boned, crushed, or hammer-smashed” during the show. Meanwhile, the performance launches the international coffee mogul Duncan Hills to monopoly status, “obliterating” the competition. When asked by news reporters if such an act of corporate sponsorship means that Dethklok is “selling out,” frontman Nathan Explosion growlingly rejoins: “We are here to make coffee metal. We will make everything metal. Blacker than the blackest black . times infinity.” Touting “the biggest -

A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan One year ago, we came together at the Gershwin Theatre for the very first Arts for Autism concert. Dozens of Broadway actors joined more than 150 young performers to take part in a show that inspired, educated and entertained us. It was uplifting to see so many passionate artists collaborate to raise awareness, encourage acceptance and to celebrate the power of the arts. We also witnessed the Broadway debut of Gina Hitsos, a young singer with autism who found her voice through the magic of music. There was an infectious feeling of love, excitement and optimism as everyone left the theatre that night. After a year of planning and projects we are back! We have many new and exciting developments since last June. After debuting a special arrangement of “Defying Gravity” in last year’s concert, we released a music video to share the beautiful message with an even wider audience. In February, we ventured out to the Ice Plant Recording studios in Queens with three former Broadway Elphabas from Wicked to reimagine the song we know and love. You can find the video on our website at ArtsForAutism.net. In May, we joined Autism Speaks at MetLife Stadium for the Northern New Jersey Walk. We were thrilled to be there and show our support. Jacque and our talented musicians serenaded and entertained the walkers; it was wonderful to see firsthand the positive impact that music can have. Now it’s June, and here we are again at the Gershwin Theatre. -

Metalocalypse: by Alera Anon Backgrounds
Metalocalypse: by Alera_Anon Backgrounds - Drop-in (free): Self Explanatory Klokateer (100 cp): Dethklok’s loyal army, bodyguards, servants, and (most importantly) their road crew. Suicidally loyal to their masters, they obey Dethklok without question. A brutally high mortality rate in their line of work (even the hiring process has a 50% rate, as participants are paired up and must duel to the death unarmed), you will live as a generic, replaceable gear in the machine that is Dethklok. Personal Assistant Assistant (100 cp): As an assistant manager of Dethklok, it is your duty to work under Charles Ofdensen to help manage the business side. It is thankless work, but the most fulfilling you will ever do. Because it simply needs to be done, and if not you, who will? Metal God (300 cp): You are a musician near the talent level of Dethklok. Actually joining the band is not entirely out of the question, but you'll need to prove yourself to each member as well as Charles. And may the gods pity you if you try to replace a member. Perks – Swearing a Chord (free): For the duration of this Jump, every expletive you use is replaced by a certain pinch harmonic. Everyone still gets what you meant, but this lets you say it on TV. Brutal Bureaucracy/Yeah, it’s very metal (100 cp, free Personal Assistant Assistant): You gain the ability to dismiss “minor” legal/health code problems by pointing out how metal they are. Drains clogged with dead, rotting employees? Metal. Easily avoidable workplace accidents the cause of death? Yeah. -
Bryan Beller Is Suddenly Every- Where at Once

BY E.E. BRADMAN IT’S 12:30 ON A WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, AND I’M TALKING TO BRYAN BELLER, who’s on his way to the helicopter that will take him to tonight’s sold-out Dethklok show. Klokateers, the band’s hooded helpers, will be at the door to pass out Dethklok tattoos, and bartenders will serve drinks with specially made cocktail napkins. Eight hours later, the band is scheduled to take the stage, kick ass, and accept the adulation of the thousands of rabid fans who snapped up tickets in time. Beller’s got a million things on his mind—there are albums to mix, sessions to plan, and tours in the balance—but his primary job tonight will be to make William Murderface, the bassist of Dethklok, sound good to a Comic-Con audience full of hardcore metal fans. And as anyone who’s ever seen Adult Swim’s hit cartoon series Metalocalypse knows, that’s a mighty Herculean task. Lucky for him, Beller has a skill set heavy enough to inspire a fictional character: He’s a rocker’s rocker bassplayer.com / october2012 29 CS BRYAN BELLER with superhuman chops, ears of gold, a tone all his own, an intense work ethic, and a sense of humor that just won’t quit. -

BRENDON SMALL's GALAKTIKON: "A High Stakes Intergalactic Extreme Rock Album", His Long-Awaited Side Project Set to Release in April 2012
For Immediate Release February 20th, 2012 Metalocalypse Co-Creator Announces New Side Project: BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON BRENDON SMALL is the co-creator/ writer/ actor/ director/ producer/ of ADULT SWIM'S METALOCALYPSE television series. Brendon Small is also responsible for writing and performing all of the show's music and DETHKLOK: THE DETHALBUM and DETHALBUM II, the latter now known as the fastest-selling death metal album to date. Now, Brendon has written and produced BRENDON SMALL's GALAKTIKON: "A High Stakes Intergalactic Extreme Rock album", his long-awaited side project set to release in April 2012. The album release will coincide with the Season 4 premiere of METALOCALYPSE. Coming off of the second DETHKLOK album which was heavier and darker than the first, BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON searches for melody (in the vocal) and finds inspirations in modern black metal, Queen, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. No influence is unwelcome on this project. Brendon Small paired with DETHKLOK drummer (legendary metal drummer) Gene Hoglan (Dethklok, Strapping Young Lad, Testament, Fear Factory) and DETHKLOK bassist Bryan Beller (Dethklok, Steve Vai, Mike Keneally band) and DETHKLOK engineer and mixer Ulrich Wild. “This album should be thought of as an audio comic book, an over acted chamber drama, a ridiculous premise that takes itself way too seriously all the way to the end,” states Brendon Small. BRENDON SMALL’s GALAKTIKON comes as a follow up to Brendon’s work on the chart-topping DETHKLOK albums based on METALOCALYPSE and released by Williams Street Records. DETHKLOK: THE DETHALBUM debuted at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 with over 30,000 copies sold in the first week and held the “fastest- selling death metal album to date” position originally until the follow-up, DETHALBUM II, surpassed it to break the aforementioned record with a #15 debut on the Billboard Top 200. -
